(More customer reviews)...I can't help but think that slowing the tracks down on the CD would have made it easier. Also, Perrin doesn't spend much time explaining the actual promised "breakdown" of Slash's work - the full title of the book is THE TECHNIQUES OF SLASH: THE BEST OF GN'R, but the title seems to change throughout - sometimes it's a demonstration of Slash's techniques, sometimes it's just tabs of their best songs with little explanation.

For example, he notes the "power strumming" for Civil War, but doesn't give any advice on how to strum the opening, which is in my opinion the hardest part.

It's still a good book and very useful because it contains accurate transcriptions of the songs, and many of them are indeed their best. However I also bought a tab book for Appetite for Destruction - the only bonus here is a few Use Your Illusion tracks and a CD, because the "tutoring" they promise on the back cover isn't exactly very helpful.

Also, don't be fooled by the back cover - November Rain, Bad Obsession and various others that are listed are NOT transcribed; brief solo passages are contained within a section called "Signature Slash Licks," which basically means you learn to play part of the November Rain solo, NOT the entire song (as I was lead to believe).

There's so much Appetite content in this book, I feel as if I paid twice for the same thing! But at least it has _some_ UYI songs, such as Yesterdays, which is fairly easy to play.

However also be aware that this is very hard - the solo for Sweet Child O' Mine is the hardest solo I've ever played, and they don't make it any easier with the CD. (Listen to how fast it goes!)

Good book, not perfect though.

King handing off songs to each other, you've got twice the value of most normal blues songs.And this book puts out double the value that way.Just flip this one open to DAYS OF OLD and watch these two six-string storytellers weave the tapestry tight on this shuffle.If you'd like to "see how it's done", then pick up this book.

To me, the only thing that could make this any better would for the album to have included my two favorite guitarists - Carlos Santana and Henry Garza of Los Lonely Boys - in a four way demonstration of skill; and, of course, for this book to then have the four-way view of the action on stage!

Pick up a copy - this is a good one.

(More customer reviews)I'm a typical 35 year old guy who decided to take up guitar.I bought a Fender Strat and found a guy who gives lessons.When I started out, I thought I wanted to learn to play rock.I soon discovered I sucked at chords.
My instructor started showing me lead blues guitar stuff and I thought, "This is cool...".He suggested we get this book and base our lessons on it.It turned out to be an excellent idea.The book is well organized and takes you through the basic lead guitar blues.It starts off real slow and builds to about a low intermidiate level.I acutally have all the 12 bar pieces in the book memorized.I usually play them to warm up.
The book comes with a CD that plays the exercises once with the lead guitar and again without it.When you look at the book, it seems kinda cheesy but it's actually a good book.There are a few typos in the TAB / notes but no big deal.It you stick to it, you'll be playing the blues in no time!

He is a tab reader, and said that what he liked most about this book and the others is that the chords are given on the first page of the piece, and which version of the chords are used for the piece - for those of you who don't play the guitar, this merely means that you can make the same chord by arranging your fingers in different ways on the guitar, and the book shows you the best one for the song. He told me that he can go over the cords before reading the tab and that makes it much easier for him, that extra prep before he gets into the song. From what he says, this is not common, but it is a plus for a tab style book which makes it a better purchase.
