(More customer reviews)There are lots of books and places to learn about pentatonic scales.So often, you get the same thing over and over.This book is a breathe of fresh air with lots of great ideas.It's not really a book on licks but a book of ideas and new ways to look at the pentatonic scale.If you already know something about playing guitar and you're looking for something to push your limits, try this.I'm a blues player and pentatonic scales are a big thing to me, but sometimes the same patterns get stale.This book took care of that for me.

Songs include greats like "Walkin' Blues", "Come on in my kitchen", "Cross Road Blues"--good stuff.

This is not really a beginners book.Intermediate at least.For a great beginners book get "Traditional, Country, and Electric Slide Guitar" by Arlen Roth.That one will give a beginner "That Sound" right off the bat.

(More customer reviews)If you have fooled around with an acoustic guitar, learned a couple chords, and are a huge fan of the Delta blues styles of Son House, Robert Johnson, Muddy Waters, Elmore James, and Mississippi Fred McDowell, then this is the book for you.I learned more from this book than I did from several years of private guitar lessons.
Roth shows you how remarkably simple it is to play bottleneck guitar once you have the basics down.He offers several scales and transcriptions of popular blues songs ("Come On in My Kitchen", "(I Believe I'll) Dust My Broom") that help you learn with minimal frustration.The accompanying CD is extremely helpful--you can learn only so much about music from words alone.He shows you how to play in all the alternate tunings, and when to apply the tunings to particular styles.He teaches you techiques for both acoustic and electric guitar.You also get the feeling that he's wants to teach you how to play not because he was commissioned to write a book, but simply because he loves the music.
Roth also includes a section on the country/bluegrass style of bottleneck.While my passion lies in the blues, I've learned a great deal from this section as well--particularly how to play lap style, and how to play those great southern gospel songs ("Will the Circle Be Unbroken?").
As with any musical instruction, you should approach this book with some creativity.For example, I prefer to use the slide on my ring finger, while Roth suggests you use your pinky.I think the ending to "Come On in My Kitchen" sounds better when played at the 12th fret, rather than the 5th.But once you get the basics down, you'll develop techniques that work best for you.From there, you'll be able to slap on a record of your favorite slide guitarist and by using what Roth has taught you, you can play right along with him!
I highly recommend this book to any casual guitar player with an interest in learning bottleneck.You may not become the next Robert Johnson or Dickie Betts, but you'll certainly impress yourself and your peers with your new guitar skill (which, between you and me, is surprisingly easy!!).

Blues Guitar, Step One with Keith Wyatt Review

(More customer reviews)This is an outstanding video for [the price]. Keith Wyatt is not only an excellent blues guitarist he is an excellent teacher. The video details shuffle rhythm and awesome rhythmic variations that actually make it interesting to play rhythm guitar. The video also goes into a segment on how to construct a 12 bar blues solo and blues phrasing. I have recommend this video as well as step two of this series to all my friends who play not only blues guitar but rock, jazz and country. It is just that solid of a video.On a side note I have purchased videos from many other guitarists and unfortunately many of them seem impressed with themselves or are great guitarists but crummy teachers, this series is both informative and humorous. More than worth twice the money. I have been playing guitar for over 20 years and found a wealth of information contained in this video.

(More customer reviews)The Art of Shuffle by Dave Rubins is the best book on the subject I have ever come across and is a sheer delight for teachers and students alike.It realistically defines an area of study and then simply and clearlydelivers all that the printed page can.Where the printed page falls off,the information is then supported by a CD that is divided into individualtracks foreasy-find student repetition.At first the student will usethese tracks to understand what is being rhythmically and musically saidthen, later on, it is just good jam tracks to enjoy and keep your memoryand chops together.I particularly appreciate the divided tracks (thisshould be an industry standard) so you can skip over the tuning section orany part you're not focussing on instead of having to listen to the wholeCD in order to get to a specific section.I give this effort eleven stars( a perfect ten...plus) and I sincerely hope this author will do it again;I'd love to have one on turnarounds and as many other aspect of the bluesas any series could ever hold. This author makes the art of shuffle simplyirresitable.

(More customer reviews)I bounced onto this page because I wanted to write a review. I've had this book for about a month. I'm a bass player originally, and am now moving over to guitar. Frankly, the content presentation (comprehensiveness and pacing) is just, well, excellent. I was surprised at my progress and how much I learned... and how good I sounded too. I think the book works best for those either just starting to learn lead guitar or those in an early intermediate stage. Also, the licks you'll be learning are straight ahead rock too, so you'll enjoy this book most if you like rock/rock 'n roll. Beyond that, I can only echo the comments in the Best of breed for beginners, November 8, 1998, post. They're right on target. In sum, I really felt like I got my money's worth with this book and, if you meet the criteria I note above, I think you will too.

(More customer reviews)I'm a typical 35 year old guy who decided to take up guitar.I bought a Fender Strat and found a guy who gives lessons.When I started out, I thought I wanted to learn to play rock.I soon discovered I sucked at chords.
My instructor started showing me lead blues guitar stuff and I thought, "This is cool...".He suggested we get this book and base our lessons on it.It turned out to be an excellent idea.The book is well organized and takes you through the basic lead guitar blues.It starts off real slow and builds to about a low intermidiate level.I acutally have all the 12 bar pieces in the book memorized.I usually play them to warm up.
The book comes with a CD that plays the exercises once with the lead guitar and again without it.When you look at the book, it seems kinda cheesy but it's actually a good book.There are a few typos in the TAB / notes but no big deal.It you stick to it, you'll be playing the blues in no time!
