(More customer reviews)This band is seriously underrated and often overlooked. I can't think of a better candidate for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or for a VH1 Behind the Music (we've seen the Journey story like a thousand times already). Roger Hodgson and Rick Davies are outstanding song writers. These transcriptions are basic and may not be completely accurate in certain cases but this book is still great and these songs are so much fun to play- especially if you happen to have a Wurli or a keyboard with a good Wurli sound...and of course a 12 string guitar. It pretty much focuses on the band during their classic lineup (the only lineup that matters)- Roger Hodgson, Rick Davies, Dougie Thompson, John Helliwell and Bob Seibenberg. The only exception is the song Cannonball. Other than the song "I'm Beggin' You" I don't think any fans will miss any of the less inspirational material released since Roger left. Maybe one day the stars will again align just so and the original band will come together again- at least to accept a long overdue entrance into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame... but until then these songs are a tremendous inspiration for musicians around the world and I highly reccomend this book.

(More customer reviews)Not to over state things, or in any way be overly dramatic, but Paul Gilbert could very well be the Messiah.You see, musicians of this caliber have never displayed the humility, frivolity and utter ease that characterizes this work.Too often, ego gets in the way.This guy's clearly not trying to prove anything.He's just slamming out some SICK rock and roll, and sounding like he's having a blast doing it.His music sounds so stunningly effortless, yet scarily complicated to us mere mortals.My brain hurts so good when I listen to this record.This is extra special stuff.I will not try to add anything more specific about the record beyond what the other reviewers have so effectively put forth.I will just say that, if you do not wish to have a deficiency in the soundtrack to your life, buy this record.Then buy everything else he's done.This is one of those extraordinary musicians whose work belongs in every music fan's collection, regardless of idiomatic preference.Don't miss out.

(More customer reviews)As you've probably read by now, guitarist extraordinaire Steve Morse's gimmick with this disc was to write all-new songs with elements of the artists that influenced him.. so rather than a batch of tweaked covers, these instrumentals put a new spin on both Steve and the musicians he's giving a nod to. But despite all that, as with every other Morse offering, the real beauty of Major Impacts 2 is the man's exquisite composition skills. He can take any of these modes and make it his own; he effortlessly spins easy listenable melodies that never seem to get predictable; his guitar virtuosity is always solid but never needlessly flashy. What's remarkable to me is the way Steve's music always radiates sunshine and upbeat happiness without ever seeming to get stale from one album to the next. Every offering is continually new and interesting, and every one's a joy.

MI2's range is even wider than its predecessor's. A few straight-ahead rockers are present as always, from the classic-rock stylings of "Motor City Spirit" and "Leonard's Best" to the madly addicting down-and-dirty boogie of "Zig Zags".. but that's just the tip of the iceberg. Keyboards are utilized more than ever before in his homages to the Who, ELP and Genesis. "Cool Wind, Green Hills" masterfully crafts a gorgeous Celtic ballad. The rustic country/western hoedown "Tri-County Barn Dance" could almost be the long-lost twin of "Ghost Riders in the Sky." Some old guy named Bach even pops up in the form of a classical partita, the notes resolving themselves out of a seemingly random stream to create something beautiful once the whole structure comes together.

I can't really describe in more words what a joy this album is to experience. This is the kind of music just about anyone can find something to like about, whether they're looking for impressive musicianship, stellar melodic sensibility, excellent composition or just something energetic and happy to crank up in the car. If you like the sound of any of that.. if you'd like to hear some incredible guitar skill serving the songs, and not vice versa.. Major Impacts 2 is MOST highly recommended. Best enjoyed as loud as possible.

This year has been a busy one for rock guitar virtuoso Steve Morse. In addition to his heavy touring schedule with Deep Purple and his own Steve Morse Band, he found time to record "Major Impacts 2", a successor to his stellar Magna Carta debut, 2000's "Major Impacts".
Widely hailed as an innovative alternative to the more standard tribute album, Morse's "Major Impacts 2" concept sees him paying tribute to his influences -- not with direct covers but with original tracks that recall the style of his heroes, filtered through his own interpretive sheen. Not only does it showcase his incredible versatility and inventiveness as a guitar player, composer and interpreter, it also provides a window into how he became the guitar player he is today.
"When Magna Carta came to me with the idea, I liked it immediately because it was such a challenge," Morse recalls.So many people do tribute albums where they simply cover the songs, but this was so totally different:I didn't want to fall into the trap of being derivative, so I tried to come up with a few things that would identify a style and what that artist or composer has meant to me."
In deciding whom to pay homage to on the record he deliberately avoided targeted research, choosing instead to rely purely on his long-term musical memory. As such, we hear flavors of bluegrass and Cajun music Morse heard as a teenager in Georgia (he even plays his grandfather's fiddle on one track, "Ghost of the Bayou"); the swinging '60s sound of The Yardbirds and The Hollies ("12 Strings on Carnaby St."); Bach counterpoint ("Air on a 6 String"); guitar interpretations of Keith Emerson's organ playing ("Organically Grown") and Steven Tyler's distinctive vocal style ("Errol Smith").
Like its predecessor, "Major Impacts 2" features the guitarist's regular collaborators and Steve Morse Band members: bassist Dave LaRue and drummer/percussionist Van Romaine. Morse, who also played all keyboard parts and violin, produced the album, his third on Magna Carta.
Founding member of the fusion rock band, Dixie Dregs, and a member of Deep Purple since 1996, Morse adheres to the notion that his approach to playing and writing hasn't changed over the years, despite the many hats he wears and style bases he covers. Indeed, it's his chameleon-like musicianship that is captured so perfectly on the multi-faceted "Major Impacts 2".

It's been printed often enough, so there is nothing new here in that regard.Having said that, I would recommend this for anyone who hasn't seen any of this info and for the interviews contained within, especially the ones from David Gilmour as you get areal sense of who he is as a person.

(More customer reviews)I have been a huge fan of Morse since High shool when "What If" came out and our bassist sprang it on the rest of the band at a rehearsal break. That was about thirty years ago and Morse has been a major influence and inspiration to me ever since.
Not only as a guitarist, but as an overall renaissance man who exemplifies professionalism and impeccability in all endeavors whether in music, engineering, flying or even motocross racing(!)This book is like a guidebook on how to be a pro at whatever you do: No shortcuts,
no excuses, no whining. Just get the job done and done well.

But for me the most astounding parts are the chapters on creativity and how to compose. That is, he takes one of the most mysterious and hard to explain processes and details real concrete advice on how to get the music inside you out and down onto paper or tape or whatever and make it a reality. This was a major light bulb moment for me and shows Morse's towering musicianship and utter command of the creative process.

Just buy the book. You will read it in one night and come back to it like a reference. Don't cheap out and get a used one, either.
For twelve lousy bucks you are supporting a real, honest-to-god working musician who has always given it 100% from the start.

(More customer reviews)This concert is a tribute to THE drummer, Buddy Rich.He STILL exists in every drummer's (mostly over 40) heart, mind and soul.Phil Collins plays with Buddy's band on most of this video.Unfortunatelly, with all duerespect to this great musician, Phil Collins, he should have been the MCand let other well known drummers play with the band who have studied andlearned from Buddy. The other fantastic drummers mentioned that are part ofthis video seem to be mostly talking about Buddy and do very little playingon the video.They should have been doing MOST of the playing instead ofPhil.Before I go further let me say that I respect and enjoy Phil'splaying and style just as much as I do Buddy's.Phil is an excellentdrummer, singer and all around musician's musician, as we all know, but hisstyle does NOT lend itself to the Buddy Rich band.And, he sounded like hehad not been playing drums for a while (not practiced) on this video.Hisusual playing confidence was just NOT there.He came no where near cuttingthe charts with the power, sting, warmth and sensitivety of Buddy Rich. However, four stars ARE in order for this video for the respect andaffection shown for this unbelievable drummer, Buddy Rich.Phil Collinshas gained even more respect from me for doing this tribute.I saw Buddyfive times in person in my life from The Cellar in Washington, DC in thelate 60's to one of his last performances at Billy Bob's (of all places) inthe Ft Worth Texas Stockyards.I have been listening to everything I canfind by him since I was 14 and I'm now 54.I play a little myself, but ifI ever felt like I was "the drummer" when playing professionally,all I had to do was put on a side with Buddy.It'll bring you to yourtechnical knees as a drummer and wipe that "I'm the best"attitude right out of your mind.Maybe that was Phil's problem on thevideo.Buddy intimidated his playing as well, even from the grave.No onehas come close to him , technically, and I don't think anyone ever will.

(More customer reviews)"more Drum Techniques of Rush" is another set of transcriptionsof Neil Peart by Bill Wheeler.The second book is noticably thinner thanthe first (52 vs 80 pages), and the typesetting is different, which I founddisconcerting at first, but all and all is just fine.While the first bookcovered a lot of the more popular "heavy-hitters" in terms ofdrum parts, this book covers a few tracks that are, frankly, not asdifficult to transcribe.Still, the transcriptions are correct,illustrating, and generally well-done.

(More customer reviews)I find this sheetbook quite useful.Needless to say, if you don't have the album don't bother with it.However it contains some fine music and it is excellent excercise too. Still I find a repeating problem with all ofSting's sheetbooks.They all seem like adapted versions of the songs, nothow they're really played.So if you find the bass riff in the begginingof "Fields of gold" unlike the original, it is because it isoriginally played by the horn, and so on...Still, It's worth it.

(More customer reviews)The last review was a fair assessment, as is a 3 star rating.I'd say the mix of songs included is pretty good but the detail is just not there if you want to learn Gilmour's trademark solos and melodies.However, as Gilmour put it, nobody in the band was very good at complicated chord structures and most of their songs are fairly straightforward.So even a novice should be able to pick up the gist of their songs with this book.That's probably all you should take from it anyway, the big picture, because Pink Floyd have always been a band where the whole is greater than the sum of the parts.One glaring error, however,is that Astronomy Domine is in the wrong key...but otherwise a great tool for Floyd fans of their earlier work.

I saw it in a guitar store and was disappointed with the list of songs that you can learn to play. I was hoping that there would bedogs, echoes, pigs on the wing II, wish you were here, shine on, highhopes, Time, Is there anybody out there etc. But the only good song in thisbook for playing with the guitar is On the Turning away. The other songsare effects pedals ridden. Its hard to play them if you don't have a bigpedal board (Well, maybe not Dogs of War). Seriously disappointed. And itis $20!

(More customer reviews)I don't why anyone has'nt written a review for this book yet. Its perfect, and the accompanying CD is so helpful to help learn the rhythms of progressive rock keyboard. I would greatly recommend this book if you are sick of playing yankee doodle or any other book with boring sheet music. Contained in the book is an adequate description of the genre and presents perfect examples that you can learn. I found this book very satisfying and not too hard. I also have the rock keyboard and find that one great as well. So do buy these books.

Pink Floyd - The Wall (Piano and Vocal) Review

(More customer reviews)All in all, a great tab book to a fantastic album; David Gilmour is really a fascinating player with a very unique style, and this book is a great way of learning about Gilmour's technique, and thus understand Pink Floyd as musicians as well as the guitar as an instrument much better. Some songs here are very easy to play, even for beginners, and others are more complicated, so it's better to start with the easier ones like 'Hey You', then build up to the more sophisticated riffs and solos.
The book is very accurate, and has few errors; but in that accuracy lies its biggest failing. Many times the transcriber made too much of an effort to put down every single sound on the album, and thus take small, almost unnoticable ticks and scratches and write them down as 'unpitched percussive notes'(i.e blocked notes). Those are very confusing and many times completely unnecessary. I played the Wall CD in full volume and still wasn't able to hear many of these notes (I wouldn't be surprised if some of them were gleeches in the recording which were removed during the CD remastering). Of the ones I did hear, I'm sure at least some were not intentional.
Bottom line: excellent book, but more for studying of Gilmour's playing than for actually playing the songs.
