Who Killed the Jingle? How a Unique American Art Form Disappeared Review

Steve Karmen gives you a close up look at the advertising business from his point of view, the ad jingle composer. What once was an advertising staple, the jingle, well remembered by this boomer, has morphed into a cloning of pop songs. The unique jingle has gone the way of the horse and buggy, never to return. Not cutting edge enough, the author laments. Karmen's writing is relaxed, you get the feeling he is telling this story just to you. A very interesting read, difficult to put down, you will get to the end much too quickly.

Product Description:
In this funny and insightful investigation, Steve Karmen - dubbed the "King of the Jingle" by People magazine - takes us back to a time when consumers happily sang along to "Pepsi Cola Hits the Spot," "This Bud's for You," and "Hershey Is the Great American Chocolate Bar," and brings us to the era of borrowed melodies, electronic sounds, and lyrics that never mention the name of the product. Did Madison Avenue get too sophisticated for its own good? Too cheap? Too sneaky? In its quest to combat the technology that allows viewer to "zap" the commercials, "tune out," or eliminate advertising, did the advertising world invent "integration" (putting the product into the programming) rather than make the commercials lovable, hummable units of entertainment themselves? Karmen explores the demise of the advertising music business and why the future of advertising is so precarious.

Guitar One Presents Open Ears: A Journey Through Life with Guitar in Hand (Book) Review

Guitar One Presents Open Ears: A Journey Through Life with Guitar in Hand [Paperback]

I have been a huge fan of Morse since High shool when "What If" came out and our bassist sprang it on the rest of the band at a rehearsal break. That was about thirty years ago and Morse has been a major influence and inspiration to me ever since.
Not only as a guitarist, but as an overall renaissance man who exemplifies professionalism and impeccability in all endeavors whether in music, engineering, flying or even motocross racing(!)This book is like a guidebook on how to be a pro at whatever you do: No shortcuts,
no excuses, no whining. Just get the job done and done well.

But for me the most astounding parts are the chapters on creativity and how to compose. That is, he takes one of the most mysterious and hard to explain processes and details real concrete advice on how to get the music inside you out and down onto paper or tape or whatever and make it a reality. This was a major light bulb moment for me and shows Morse's towering musicianship and utter command of the creative process.

Just buy the book. You will read it in one night and come back to it like a reference. Don't cheap out and get a used one, either.
For twelve lousy bucks you are supporting a real, honest-to-god working musician who has always given it 100% from the start.

Peace,
Philbillie

Product Description:
Most people know the part about them doing what they love to do best in front of a throng of adoring fans. The less obvious part of a musician's job description can include dealing with a broken-down band bus, lights falling from the stage, people who don't pay, and other occupational hazards. In this collection of 50 Guitar magazine columns from the mid-'90s on, guitarist Steve Morse (Steve Morse Band, Dixie Dregs, Deep Purple) sets the story straight about what being a working musician really means. He deals out philosophy and practical advice on: playing with the band, songwriting and developing a style, recording and equipment, and much more, through anecdotes of his many fascinating hard-knock lessons learned. inch.Self-teaching, adjusting to fit the situation, and good people skills are the keys to making it happen. Learning these skills, in addition to mastering technique, seems to be the way to go. inch.- Steve Morse

This is decent large-size landscape manuscript paper, but note that the weight is lower than it probably ought to be. Also, the staves are fairly small (better than the comparable portrait Carta paper) but could be smaller. This is about as good as it gets if you order online.

$30 Music School (Book) Review

$30 Music School [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

This book is a great read. I'm a musician with the attention span of a bird, and I read $30 Music School in a day. Believe me. That's saying a lot. I've read a load of music business-related books, and none of them quite measure up to the experience of reading this one.
It's written with a style I can relate to with loads of humor and no-bull lessons. It's like chewing the fat about every aspect of what it means to be a musician with a friend of yours. Hell...I even had a great time reading about how to shop for and tune a drumset - and I'm a guitarist. (The chapters about internet promotion and songwriting basics are especially enlightening!)
If you're on a "mission from God" to take your music to a new level, you probably just landed here for a reason.
This book is exactly what the title says.
