(More customer reviews)This book, along with its companion book "Jazz Guitar Stadards II,"are the best song books I've seen for the serious jazz guitarist.Each standard has four separate arangements - word melody lead sheet, chord melody solo, comping etude backup. and single note jazz improvisation melody.Among these arangements, there are many options from which any guitarist can pick and chose their own desired approach to each song.I have concentrated on the chord melody arrangements, which I found quite chalenging, but are well worth the effort.With the exception of the word melody, the arrangements are presented in both regular music and TAB formats.This combination definitely makes it easier to master very difficult fingering movements.All chord names are also included, so students can learn to associate the finger patterns with the correct chord designation.

I believe this song book to be aimed at the advanced amateur.

Beginning Jazz Guitar: The Complete Jazz Guitar Method: Beginning-intermediate-mastering Chord/Melody-mastering Improvisation Review

(More customer reviews)I've played guitar for more than thirty years and have focused on straight ahead jazz for the last 15 or so.All that time I've absorbed bits and pieces of musical knowledge from method books, lick guides and transcriptions as well as from the experience gained playing with others. No resource that I've encountered offers the degree of fundamental understanding that one can gain from this series of books.

Unlike most other method books, "Beginning Jazz Guitar" starts from chapter 1 with a dual track instruction mode of chord and scale studies mixed with a moderate dose of musical theory AND the author wisely limits the first volume to just the major scale.Too many other finepublications insist on bedeviling the student with a bewildering array of scales and modes in rapid fire succession.This volume shines when it comes to supplying answers to real world questions as the student might actually encounter them.Additionally, Jody Fisher presents scales in a format that encourages horizontal rather than vertical playing (one of the most important and most overlooked aspect of improvisation).As a matter of fact, more experienced players may have to relearn scale positions to work through the etudes and excercises in this book since they are fundamentally different than those normally found in most instructional texts.

Likewise, for a beginning book, the text does a credible job in presenting harmony and chord progressions with just enough theory to understand how progressions are structured and how to extend and alter chords. Most books present chordal theory in the first part of the book and then take up lead playing in the second half as if they bore no relationship with one another.Again, the author scores with the dual track approach.

Finally, the information contained in the "Coda" at the end of the book is worth the price alone.One could spend half a lifetime studying jazz guitar and not stumble over some these gems of info.

As a companion to this book I might also recommend "All Solos & Grooves for Jazz Guitar" by Jim Ferguson (Mel Bay) which serves up major scale studies along with more advanced solos utilizing similar techniques.As a matter of fact all of Ferguson's books would fit in nicely with this series.

All in all, an excellent resource for the determined student.

For the guitarist who has ever spent time listening to the genius of Monks music - feeling at the same time enlightened by it's wisdom, and saddened by the ever nagging feeling that you, as a guitarist, could not truly benefit, this book is the answer to your unspoken wish.
If you have a desire to go beyond the limitations of the instrument - which turn out to be false - and are looking for your own unique voice, this book can be part of that journey for you. Somebody has finally done it for us. Gary has put in much time and effort, and he has found all the essential notes - those required to express Monk's style, and he's figured out how to put them on the fretboard. Every measure brings awe and surprise to the player. You won't believe that the sounds are coming from your guitar!
The book is well written, and each piece is a distillation of the essentials from numerous recordings. Gary Wittner has an encyclopedic knowledge of Monk's music, which is apparent in this book. There are extensive performance notes for each piece, some detailing almost every measure. These are essential, as they point out points that may not be obvious to you on first or even subsequent reading. For example, the duration of certain notes are very important to bring out the melody which is sometimes "hidden" in the chord voicings. The chord names are included at each measure. Fingerings are included when necessary, and everything is in TAB as well as standard notation. It couldn't be clearer.
It's not an easy journey - Monks' wasn't, and I don't imagine Gary's was either, but when you begin to work through the material you will start to see the connections. You'll start learning that wisdom that Monk was trying to pass on to us. It was meant for all of us.

The Real Book: Sixth Edition Review

Like many musicians I have owned a copy of the, "Real Book 5th Edition" for a long time.I use it at rehearsals, I take it to gigs, and over years of use it has received a lot a wear and tear.As you may know the, "Real Book 5th Edition" is a home made publication, it is not available to the general public it is sold by musicians to musicians.Consequently finding a copy is very difficult, and replacing a worn out copy is just as difficult.Despite its limited availability it is used by musicians all over the world and has become a standard piece of equipment any jazz gig.

Hal-Leonard's "Real Book 6th Edition", at first glance, appears to a fully licensed duplicate of the, "Real Book 5th Edition" however, it is NOT.

The cover is the same, the type set is the same, many of the songs are the same, and most of the keys match the, "Real Book 5th Edition."Unfortunately, many important songs are missing including: "Gentle Rain", "Pennsativa", "Green Dolphin St.", "Days of Wine & Roses", "Spain", "A Foggy Day", and all frank Zappa songs.Some great songs have been added including: "Whispering", "Nuage", "Topsy", "That's Amore", "Easter Parade", "When You Wish Upon a Star", and many more.A few songs appear in a different key than the, "5th Edition" including: "Windows" and "Here's That Rainy Day."There are also some corrections including: "Blue Train" changed from Cm blues to Eb blues; "Equinox" changed from Cm to C#m; the chords to "Four" have been 'corrected'; the bass lines of "So What" and "Maiden" have also been corrected.

The result of Hal-Leonard's efforts gives us a great fake book which is easy to read and easy to buy.The song selection is great, but it is different form the, "5th Edition" this will present a problem when someone on a gig calls, "Conference of the Birds" or any other song not in this book.

What made the, "Real Book 5th Edition" a standard for so many years was the fact that it was one of a kind.Each song had it's own page, the type set was large and clear, the chords were simple and to the point, the songs listed were ones that musicians played, and the arrangements were streamlined (but accurate), for years this was the only book that used this style.

Today, however, many fake books published by Warner Brother, Sher Music, and Hal-Leonard use this style.Consequently great music and quality arrangements are easily accessible to all musicians.There is no longer a need for the, "Real Book 5th Edition" it has been replaced by fully legal and more accurate publications.Hal-Leonard's, "Real Book 6th Edition" is another one of the new generation fake books.

I hope all the songs missing from the, "Sixth Edition" appear in books 2 or 3 which are due out soon.

Joe Pass Guitar Chords Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this book on the recommendation of Joe Satriani, who said, in an interview, that he first began to expand his guitar playing after a month or so of studying the chords in this book.I figured I'd give it a shot, because, let's face it - if Satriani found it useful, it can't be bad.
I was pretty happy with the purchase.The book is intended, explicitly, for ear training purposes.It lists major chord groups (maj, min, 7th, etc) and within each group, Joe offers the substitutions that he uses for them.The chords are listed in standard notation and a box diagram, and there are intentionally no chord names listed to associate with them.By getting the different chord sounds and associating them with a shape, one can develop a pretty good ear for commonplace chord substitutions.This is definitely an important skill to have for an aspiring guitarist of any style - and essential for anyone who wants to be a versatile guitarist.
The second section of the book goes through progressions of chords for each sound.These are generally used as turn-arounds, substitutions of multiple chords for a single one, or can be used as whole progressions.Again, there are no chord names listed here.
The last section of this book is an actual list of common jazz progressions, and one blues progression that is apparently common for Joe Pass (and not quite so common in the rest of the guitar community - a good thing in my book).These are only slash chord charts, meaning that all you have is a few measures of slashes and the chord(s) to go in each by name.There are no diagrams or standard notation.Then, Joe goes through substitutions he uses for these common progressions.This section is incredibly useful.
Unfortunately, the last part is also the only drawback of this book that I can see.Because the first two sections do not go over the chords associated with each chord name, this book does not stand alone unless the reader already has knowledge of varieties of chords available for stuff like Amaj7+5, D(b13), etc.That, coupled with the fact that the whole thing is only 24 pages long, is the reason for 4 stars instead of 5.
All in all, this book is highly recommended.It will improve your playing tremendously, and within a short period of time.

(More customer reviews)Here's a book I really wish I had back in high school jazz band. I used to go nuts with the charts back then, trying to figure out voicings and get all the notes in where the arranger wrote "Gb#11b13+" or some such, when that's really the last think you should be trying to do in a big band. But a good rhythm guitarist- as I leanred later- should concentrate on *rhythm*, using minimal voicings to develop a line that really acts like a counterpoint to the bass line. Forget all the altered tones; stick with 3rds and 7ths and develop good movement- think Freddie Greene in Count Basie's band. Simple voicings and solid rhythm.
This book is all about learning those voicings, learning where to subsctitute, and where to simplify to build interesting, musicallines. At that it succeeds marvelously. It doesn't assume any prior skill or knowledge, other than being generally familair with the guitar, knowing some basic chords and having some familiarity with the swing style. All chords are diagrammed as well as written out, so it's easy and convenient for both reader and non-reader alilke.
It's is a great tool for the beginning swing guitarist, the high school or college jazz band player looking foran organized way to approach rhythm guitar, or an experienced guitarist looking to expand his or her style. I've given it four stars instead of five as I think it could be organized a little bit better, and with a little more explanation in parts, but overall it's an excellent book.

(More customer reviews)These are not "Chord Melodies". Rather they are chord improvisations over the changes of six tunes: Misty, Billie Joe, a Blues in Bb, Watch What Happens, Sunny and The Days of Wine and Roses.
Very dense chord arrangements showing different harmonic possibilities with the basic changes. I recorded these as I learnedthem, so I could listen to them to really absorb the material.
Joe gives no harmonic analysis at all, so it is up to the reader to figure out the theory, and boy, there's lots of it.
I'm a professional jazz guitarist and teacher....playing nearly forty years, and I still review these and pick chord licks that I like, transpose them to other keys, positions and strings, analyze the voice leading, chord substitutions, etc. I've had this book for years, and lots of it has slowly seeped into my playing. I'll play a piece, pick a chord lick that I like (like any one of them), and then try to apply it to my improvisations in other tunes.
In my opinion, for advanced players, this is one of the best books out there to dig into some really lush and melodic chord playing. I found it tough reading....and I'm a pretty advanced player. But I have worked through most of the major guitar books out there and this one is one of my mainstays.

Mel Bay Jazz Guitar Standards Chord Melody Solos (Book & CD) Review

(More customer reviews)This is a spiral bound book with 44 arrangements and 2 CD's. Two outstanding arrangements are 'Misty' and 'Summertime', each by a different arranger. I like 'Misty' for the innovationand 'Summertime' for the feeling. These are not the only good arrangements in the book, just my personal favorites. The recordings are bare bones for the most part utilizing just a miked up jazz guitar but there are a few exceptions with bossa nova rhythm sections.The only slight negative I've found is there are a few tunes that were arranged, performed and/or recorded poorly. One arranger for example tries to put chords to every beat of the melody he tackles which is redundant sounding and too difficult for even him to pull off. Dogmatically sticking to one discipline when combining other techniques might help is ridiculous. Another example is the arrangement of 'It Don't Mean A Thing If It Ain't Got That Swing' which sounds more like a funeral dirge than the uptempo, fun tune it was meant to be. The chord/melody format is probably wrong for this tune. The majority of the arrangements are however professionally competent to exceptional. 'Misty'(Rick Stone-arranger) to repeat uses interesting,(not run of the mill), chord voicings that change as the song progresses, quick change chords, counterpoint, ascending diads, some linear lines and more. Very nicely done I think ! You wouldn't need to add much to this one.

You can get enough here to get you started whether you have been playing another style or just starting on the guitar. This book is like a good golf shot enough to make you come back for more, You can get a nice Jazzy sound with some very rudimentaryknowledge. I also like that she plays Jazz on a solid body rock guitar.....not a Jazz Boat.

Jim Hall (2005) Review

(More customer reviews)This DVD was very interesting. I thought I was getting a concert - but what I got was a mini concert with instructional filler between each groove. Jim Hall is a gentle genius. He's very melodic and adds complicated arpeggios around each melodic line. This is what makes Mr. Hall one of a kind. He doesn't give us a lot of scales andmodes between each line - he doesn't slap you w/ a barrage of notes. You get the melody with a few thrills. His choice of notes is what makes him unique. Anyway, I thought I was getting a concert, but Mr. Hall stops between each groove and tells you what he did in each song - step by step. For example: I played a G minor here and a C7 there. I found using the remote to fast forward the filler helps. All I wanted to do was relax and hear Mr. Hall play. As you can see, I gave Mr. Hall five stars, anyway. His music is one of a kind.

Solo Flight: The Genius of Charlie Christian Review

(More customer reviews)Having heard the name "Charlie Christian" uttered so reverently and so frequently in jazz circles I was curious to learn more about him and to hear him play. With that in mind I bought this video. Unfortunately itturns out that this is not a performance video. It's a half hour (in blackand white) of reminiscences of Christian's friends and acquaintances andsome of the guitarists he's influenced. Although I did learn alot about hisbackground, there isn't a single visual example of his playing. There arefragments of his recordings here and there, but the video is essentiallyjust a verbal documentary. Apparently the motivation for its creation wasto raise funds for a tombstone for the pioneering guitarist's unmarkedgrave. There's a note at the end indicating that a public showing of thefilm did indeed raise the money to carry out that purpose, so I supposethat in that respect the film is a success. Having passed away so early inhis career I guess it's probable that little (if any) film footage ofCharlie Christian playing exists today. Therefore I would advise interestedparties to turn to his recordings for samples of his revolutionarytechnique. Unfortunately in this video you'll hear quite a bit about it butwon't get to see any of it.

(More customer reviews)This is really a great book for what it is.I feel that the author really translates the works of Bill Evans to guitar really well.All of the songs are even in the original key.My only gripe is that they are all very short.The longest one is less than three minutes, which is why I gave it a 4 and not a 5.
