Arpeggios for Guitar (The Progressive Guitarist Series) Review

Arpeggios for Guitar [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book's title undersells it: it shows not only arpeggios but the corresponding scales and chord forms as well.It does not actually name each chord, but gives chord-scale-arpeggios in fretboard diagrams for each chord type, for example, major, minor, 6ths, 7ths -- on through the various altered forms. As the editorial review says, five positions for each are given. All of this is on one page for each chord type. So for example, you can find five scales, five chord forms, and five arpeggios for Dm7 (assuming you already know where to find "D") all laid out logically in fretboard diagrams that correspond to one another by position-- all on one page!
You'll need enough guitar knowledge to figure out the root of the chord or scale you're actually playing. Also, this does not show you chord progressions. Those could be viewed as shortcomings, but if you just accept you'll have to learn those topics elsewhere, this book becomes extremely useful. In order to actually name each chord the book would be extremely lengthy and repetitive (I have another arpeggio book like that). As it is, it packs a wealth of information into a readily accessible format. One page gives you all the musical possibilities for each chord. This is a great tool for improvising, creating new licks, and composing on the guitar. Its should prove useful for the fairly new guitarist to the more advanced, as it covers simple major and minor chords through advanced jazz chords(-scales-arpeggios).This is a true "fretboard roadmap" all in one book that I expect will give me more material to work on than I can probably master in one lifetime! Its a very simple, logical approach to the guitar that I wish I had found a long time ago.
I use this both as an exercise book -- playing each scale/arp/chord up and down the neck -- and as a reference for particular situations: coming up with ideas for soloing over, say, a maj 7 chord - or creating musical ideas for a composition.I play both pick and fingerstyle and the book is opening my eyes to all sorts of new creativity and technical growth in both styles.
Other books of this genre force you to turn pages -- or go to another book altogether -- to get from scales to chords to arpeggios. Having it all "at a glance" on one page is invaluable.I've had this book for a year or so, and am only now beginning to realize what a gold mine it is!Obviously not the only book you'll ever need, but if I were marooned on the proverbial desert island (with my guitar of course!) this is the book I'd want.

I think of something so hot, you can't stand to touch it for longer then a second--but that one second leaves a burn and scar and memory that will last forever. That's how I think of Jeff, from his music, and how this book presents him. It's a book celebrating his life, which, by fate, memorializes his death.Jeff "was."He didn't make enough music before he became a past tense, but what he left is worth the continued praise and thoughts it still generates.I wish I could send every teenager who likes boy bands this book, to show them what a real artist looks like.

This is easy excellent introduction into Jazz guitar, I mean rock bottom simple including some very basic chords, some very basic comping, improvisation and little taste of blues thrown in. You can get enough here to get you started whether you have been playing another style or just starting on the guitar. This book is like a good golf shot enough to make you come back for more, You can get a nice Jazzy sound with some very rudimentaryknowledge. I also like that she plays Jazz on a solid body rock guitar.....not a Jazz Boat.

I have had the oppertunity to meet, study, and play with Matt at the National Guitar Workshop at the Nashville site and was blown away by his knowledge of the art of music. I came home and as soon as i sat down, i forgot almost half of the information he gave me and i would try to understand the scribbles written on the sheets of paper that was given to me during my week in Nashville. I took the course again this last summer and i still needed more guidence. Thankfully, his book is out and it's like having him here in my own home! He covers everything you could imagine! this book has chapters on some of the best songwriters of the era, ranging from the, more or less anyway, fairly well known ( like tim buckley and phil ochs)to the undeservedly obscure, like david ackles. these artists do vary in quality, but the stories are always at least interesting, and often fascinating. there are lots of fine pictures of the performers in the book as well,if anything the work is a little short. people who enjoy the writings of richie unterberger and vernon joynson probably will like this as well

Guitar Secrets: Symmetrical Scales Revealed (Dimished & Whole-Tone; Book & CD) Review

Guitar Secrets: Symmetrical Scales Revealed [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book displays the ideas of how to apply the melodic minor scale, through the means of scalar sequences, static chord vamp, ii-V applications, arppegio superimpositions, pentatonic fragments, etc. From learning these ideas, one should be well equipped for further exploring into the study of this scale, which is essential in jazz music.

In terms of technique, to be able to play the phrases, particularly the wide intervallic ones in full speed that Don demonstrates on the CD, obviously requires good technique, or at least will lead to the development of your alternate/sweep picking technique so as to accommodate some unusual runs within certain phrases. In this respect, the licks and phrases in this book can at times be quite advanced.

The most useful units in the book have to be the four usages (2nd, 4th, 5th, and 7th mode of the scale) or substitutions, though the 6th mode is briefly showcased as an alternative to the harmonic minor scale in a minor ii-V progression. The demonstrated licks fuse together in general a traditional jazz sound (e.g. the "Gone but not forgotten" lick frequently appears, cf. Jerry Coker's Elements of the Jazz Language for the Developing Improvisor), arpeggio superimpositions, modern runs in 4th/5th, and wide intervallic jumps. The licks are inspiring and should help build a good foundation for developing the usages of this scale.

Interested guitarist may also want to check out Don's Artful Arpeggios: Fingerings and Applications for Guitar (REH Pro Lessons), Joe Diorio's Intervallic Designs for Jazz Guitar: Ultramodern Sounds for Improvising and Steve Khan's Pentatonic Khancepts for furthering the study of these areas which the current book has presented on different levels.

Includes tons of diminished and whole-tone lines, licks, and music examples; soloing and scale substitution from a player's perspective; and new sounds and ideas. This book is not for beginners and geared toward advanced players who have a good technique and already grasped a solid understanding of the jazz music theory.Minimal explanations are given within the examples, though the musical ideas are not difficult to figure out if the player is equipped with a sound jazz theory background. There are totally 30 great modern sounding licks to learn and extrapolate, in the categories of:

(1) Major scale and chromaticism (applied in different harmonic situations).
(2) Triads (superimposition over chords, some with chromaticism).
(3) Arpeggios (superimposition over chords, some with chromaticism).
(4) Additional ideas (mainly arpeggios with chromaticism).

Pro Secrets of Heavy Rock Singing (Music Sales America) Review

Pro Secrets of Heavy Rock Singing [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
* First off, this is a very good book that I ejoyed quite a bit, and will go back to re-read several times, I'm sure.I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.I say this because most of my comments below will sound a bit critical, but I don't mean to convey a negative impression, necessarily, I just state where this book might have been even better.Bill Martin did a fine job overall, IMO.
This book was supposed to be entitled "Metal Pipes" from what I'd heard about beforehand, and only recently learned that it had been released under the eventual title. It's a very good read, mostly because of the interviews with star rock/metal singers.A couple of comments...
1. The first section of chapters, which is actually quite short and repeats phrases/views from the subsequent interviews with the singers, is actually sort of okay, but not that good.If you've never learned anything about singing at all (e.g., the importance of hyrdation, warmup, and sleep/rest), it will be of help, but it is of limited value and really is a rather half-hearted attempt at delivering the basics of vocal production/technique and maintenance/care.It probably would have been better to integrate more on these topics with some of the sources cited on vocal technique/production and the interview comments/opinions in a summary section at the end of the book. The section on producing 'rasp' was quite unique, however, and one I've not seen before, even in Mark Baxter's "Rock and Roll Singer's Survival Manual".
2. Most of the interviews are quite good, but they are of varying quality, not because of the questions asked, but rather because some of the singers didn't really say that much in their responses (e.g., Rik Emmett, surprisingly). My favorite interview was with Tim "Ripper" Owens, who was very forthcoming in his responses (and he's a really good guy, I e-mailed with him a few times on vocal technique).I'd heard that Michael Matijevic, of Steelheart and "Rock Star" fame, was going to participate, but apparently this didn't ultimately happen.
3. Finally, a word of caution - although most of these singers have had some lessons at some time in their careers, none of them are experts in vocal production, so I'd say to take their advice if it seems logical or workable, apply it, and if it doesn't seem to be working out for you, drop it.Just because they sing well does not mean that their advice will necessarily work for you - every voice is different.
* Bottom line:Very good overall, could have been a bit better.Maybe I'll write a follow-up that addresses some of the shortcomings I saw in this book and interview some of the missing greats (e.g., Halford, Dio, Kiske).

The Complete Vocal Workout: A Step-by Step Guide to Tough Vocals (Music Sales America) Review

The Complete Vocal Workout: A Step-by Step Guide to Tough Vocals [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the book/cd collection as a way to increase my vocal range and power while singing. My interest was also awaken with the claims of "rock" singers having more extensive ranges than "opera" singers, and how people were told that rock singers would ruin their voices by singing the way they sing. (Kain, points out that they are still singing strong today.)
This book seems to "smack" all of those naysayers in the face, with a different methodology. If you are not happy with your voice and range this may be a book for you.
I think that a beginner would be fine as long as they read and follow the directions and guide notes each time they practice. The book is the next best thing to having an avant garde vocal coach in the room with you.If you want singing lessons on a budget and know what you a wanting your voice to do(increase range, singing louder, sing more from diaphram, etc.)This book is for you.
The helps in the back and the details of how to sing have been very helpful.I have seen my voice transform from a lot of strain with high notes, to something like a screech for high notes, to clear, non-strained higher notes.
It does take consistent work and remembering and following the guide notes in each exercise, but in a short time it has been worth it.

www.absoutelyunderstandguitar.com ... I bought that course after watching it, I understood the books.

I owned these books for 4 years. They collected dust on the shelf because they were too hard to follow. I bought these books because my guitar teacher (at the time) suggested I buy them for him to teach me theory. I realized the classes were going no where fast and costing me too much money, so I quit before we even got off the first chapter of the Chord book (never touched the scales)

Well recently I came across the 32 hour DVD courses from www.absolutelyunderstandguitar.com ... all I can say is WOW!

Get the course if you can. Don't waste your money on guitar teachers. You get 32 hours of a teacher (who really knows his #$%#) teaching you theory. The lessons flow together. I retained all the information. He made theory very easy to learn.

After I finished the 32 hours, I went back to the Everything about Scales and Everything about Chords books. They're great books now that I understand what he's talking about!
