The Contemporary Singer: Elements of Vocal Technique (Berklee Guide) Review

The Contemporary Singer: Elements of Vocal Technique [Paperback]

I am a classical singer and have been an Associate Professor at Berklee College of Music for 12 years and I have been extremely impressed with this book.Even though the book is called "The Contemporary Singer", it is a valuable resource for any singer. It covers specific technical areas in a clear, direct manner but also includes wonderful guidelines for topics like practicing, vocal health and performance skills. In the CD that accompanies the book, a variety of warm-up exercises are covered which are very thorough and progresses naturally.I would recommend this book to the beginning student as well as someone who just needs to reinforce their vocal technique.

I started with music [guitar and singing] when I turned fifty.Took me ten years for my ear and mind just to tune the guitar. Graham Hewitt's book is a wonderful guide to one interested in going it alone with developing avoice, whatever ability or gift. It took me a while to"recognise" the vocal tones that I was making. But with theguidence provided you can focus. I'd highly recomend it. My many thanks toit's author, Graham Hewitt

The Estelle Liebling Vocal Course: Mezzo-Soprano and Contralto (Vocal Method) Review

The Estelle Liebling Vocal Course: Mezzo-Soprano and Contralto [Paperback]

I love this book! It has fabulous exercises for strengthening the voice. I notice an improvement in my voice in only a few days of practice!I love that it has music for the exercises and not just the vocal line. The only thing I wish it had were descriptions of what techniques you are working on for each exercise. While this book focuses on classical training, it is great for other styles/genres as well. I'm actually a singer/songwriter and find that this helps me with my own music (I do not sing opera). I wholly recommend this book!

Singing for the Stars: A Complete Program for Training Your Voice (Book & 2 CD's) Review

Singing for the Stars: A Complete Program for Training Your Voice [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

This is the first voice book I've read, but I'll probably end up reading some others.I have a musical background, have played guitar and piano for years, but just recently decided to make an effort to improve my singing.
I found this book helpful in some ways, but I felt it could have been easier to understand. The book essentially details the speech level singing method, in which the chest voice and head voice are successfully bridged.
As a newcomer to singing, I found some of these concepts a little difficult to understand, and felt the book never really explained things very clearly. It reminded me a little of a instruction manual that assumes you have certain parts that have not been included.
Also, I felt it was a little odd that there was so much ink spent on celebrity testimonials. If the method is really that good, it should be able to speak (or sing) for itself.
It's been a couple of months since I read the book and listened to the CDs, and I can say that my singing has improved considerably (that's why I'm giving the book four stars).Although I don't feel I came away with a full understanding of everything the book was trying to teach, I feel I must have osmotically picked up some concepts that have been helpful.

I bought this because it's one of the textbooks I will be using for my course. The first time I tried the warm up for all voices and the basic workout, my 6-year old son who could hear me doing it was immediately attracted to the lively workout and joined me without being invited---imitating all he could hear from the cds too.I truly love this book and cd.

From the very first page of this book, I knew this was what I was looking for.I teach jazz vocal styles at a university. It is sometimes a challenge trying to express to new students the importance of how to be expressive in singing jazz. This book breaks it down in revealing the many expressions, such as interpreting if the lyrcis are informative, poetic, etc. This book is for the serious jazz vocalist that really would like to learn how to sing, how to express the lyrics, how to become one with the song and how to draw an audience into a world of unforgettable and intimate singing.

Sacred Classics: The Vocal Library Low Voice (Vocal Collection) Review

Sacred Classics: The Vocal Library Low Voice [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are a baritone, an alto, or a mezzo soprano who sings in church, you will find this book handy. Students of classical singing will also appreciate it.
The sheet music includes 10 of the sacred classics that are most often used throughout the liturgical year: Bizet's "Agnus Dei," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and others of the same stature. The accompaniments are easy enough for the average church pianist or organist.
There is a CD with each piece sung very well, and also practice tracks with just the accompaniment. This is a big help to music students and soloists who like to practice with accompaniment at home (or, hey, in the car -- why not?). The CD can be adjusted, when played on your computer, to slow down sections for intensive work.
This is a very useful book for the church musician, singer, or singing teacher to keep on hand.

The Complete Vocal Workout: A Step-by Step Guide to Tough Vocals (Music Sales America) Review

The Complete Vocal Workout: A Step-by Step Guide to Tough Vocals [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased the book/cd collection as a way to increase my vocal range and power while singing. My interest was also awaken with the claims of "rock" singers having more extensive ranges than "opera" singers, and how people were told that rock singers would ruin their voices by singing the way they sing. (Kain, points out that they are still singing strong today.)
This book seems to "smack" all of those naysayers in the face, with a different methodology. If you are not happy with your voice and range this may be a book for you.
I think that a beginner would be fine as long as they read and follow the directions and guide notes each time they practice. The book is the next best thing to having an avant garde vocal coach in the room with you.If you want singing lessons on a budget and know what you a wanting your voice to do(increase range, singing louder, sing more from diaphram, etc.)This book is for you.
The helps in the back and the details of how to sing have been very helpful.I have seen my voice transform from a lot of strain with high notes, to something like a screech for high notes, to clear, non-strained higher notes.
It does take consistent work and remembering and following the guide notes in each exercise, but in a short time it has been worth it.
