Madama Butterfly: Vocal Score Review

Madama Butterfly: Vocal Score [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this score for a performance of Butterfly in July and August of this year. You would think a Ricordi score would have the Italian text on top. But, no, on top is a larger type English text.Underneath is the barely legible Italian text.Maybe I'm missing something, but most of the Butterfly recordings that I'm familiar with are sung in Italian.Perhaps singing the opera in English was an earlier practice and I've heard "Un bel di sung" in English, but really it isn't standard practice for this opera anymore, and Ricordi should update their score.I literally had to take corrector tape and white-out the English, so I would only have the Italian below my music. I prefer to write out my own translations anyways, so the English took up precious score space, when the Italian could have been made far more legible.

Other than that, and a few mistakes here and there, the music is clear, and the score is a tough one.I've spilled some coffee on the cover, and it wiped off well, with no damage. The binding is also pretty strong.

La Cenerentola (Kalmus Edition) Review

La Cenerentola [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The music appears to have been put through a photocopier thrice too often. The Italian is difficult to read and the music is very tight on the page. There are no critical notes and no indication about what is editorial and what is Rossini.
This edition DOES NOT contain the exciting Alidoro aria that was discovered in an Italian library to replace his rather ho-hum original.
However, this is still the standard edition of the vocal score used by most opera companies and has been used for many years. It is considerably less expensive and more convenient than the two volume critical edition. If you're in the opera, this is the best choice. If you're studying/conducting the opera, get the critical edition.

Iolanthe, or the Peer & the Peri: Vocal Score with Dialogue Review

Iolanthe, or the Peer & the Peri: Vocal Score with Dialogue [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Few opera/operetta librettos read very well on their own (of course, they weren't intended to).In the case of Gilbert and Sullivan, the exercise is not only sheer pleasure, but almost a necessity; such is the speed of the monologues and intricacy of the ensembles that much of Gilbert's brilliant verbal wit gets lost.
'Iolanthe' is one of his most enrapturing confections, the story of a shepherd, Strephon, half-fairy half-mortal, whose mother, Iolanthe, is a disgraced sprite (it is forbidden for fairies to marry mortals), and whose father (unbeknownst to either) is the Lord Chancellor who won't let him marry his ward, Phyllis, darling of the Lords.
The material may be fantastic, the setting pastoral, but the satire in this 1882 work is spot-on contemporary, with jibes at the Irish problem, the uselessness of the House of Lords (who as a caste are as close to fantasy as the fairies, so it is no surprise they exchange the House of Peers for the House of Peris), and the ruling class' fear of democracy and universal suffrage.A most delightful fancy has the fairies take over Parliament in the shape of Strephon, whose every whim unites the notoriously factional Liberal and Conservative in his favour.
this is Gilbert at his funniest - the verbal contortions he undergoes in the search for rhymes break all linguistic boundaries, and his view of the fragility of centuries-old English institutions prescient. There is an extraordinary patter song by the Lord Chancellor which shows the man embodying Law and Constitution plunging into nightmare, the culmination of a libretto in which identities and forms, as well as seemingly irrevocable laws and customs, are repeatedly broken down or metamorphosed.

I've listen to Steve Green for over 25 years now and I love his music because it is so good and the words always reflect Christ and His message from the Bible.Steve in every area of his life and especially in his music is the instrument that God uses and takes himself out of the picture and lets the talents God gave him be used for God's glory and praise.Steve Green's music encourages, strengthens, teaches, inspires and leads you to the foot of Christ regardless if you are going through a hard time or a good time in your life.I love these songs on this CD and his new stuff Somewhere Between and Songs of Worship are just incredibly awesome!

The CD is awesome and this book is a great way to bring to life some songs I believe will end up in the hymn book of our churches to your church choir and special music programs.Songs like Find Us Faithful, People Need The Lord, God and God Alone, The Mission, Household of Faith, and on and on I could go, strong, deeply rooted songs that can bring greater depth to your worship services.

24 Italian Songs and Arias - Medium High Voice (Book/CD): Medium High Voice - Book/CD (Vocal Collection) Review

24 Italian Songs and Arias - Medium High Voice: Medium High Voice - Book/CD [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own both this 26 song book/Cd as well as the 24 song book/CD from John Keene and Schirmer.I use the John Paton 26 song version in order to read the excellent one page introductions it provides for each song..However my singing teacher feels that the piano accompaniments in the Paton book are pretentious, and he prefers the piano accompaniments in the Keene/Schirmer book. So, I use the CD and music from the Schirmer book but I do my research via the Paton book. The Keen/Schirmer book has a lot less melody ornamentation than the John Paton book.In my opinion, which is the opinion of a beginner, the ornamentation added to the melody in the John Paton book is excessive and is also confusing in that he never explains how to reconcile all the little notes he added, to the larger font melody notes that often seem to be at odds with the tinier notes. What is deeply, desperately need, I strongly feel, is a recording oftenors, sopranos, and baritones actually singing all 24 (or 26) of these songs! Please, if anyone knows of the existance of such as recording, post it in a user review. It would be a tremendous help. Also, note that in both the Keene/Schirmer version and the John Paton version, the piano accompaniment often does not include the melody. So, it can be "dicey" when trying to learn one of the songs to figure out the melody if the only resource available is the accompanying CD.Personally, I record the melodies into a sequencer program on my PC via a midi attached digital keyboard, but the average singer is not likely to have the technical expertise to do that.It would have been very helpful if the accompanying CD's had recorded each song twice, the second time with the melody superimposed on top of the accompaniment. My singer teacher tells me that these 24 (or 26) songs are the "bible" among singing students. Thus, a singing student really has no choice but to buy at least one of these two editions.

Sixty Songs Review

Sixty Songs [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Except for La Bonne Chanson and the later cycles, the bulk of Faure's excellent song output appeared in three collections of 20 songs each, published in both high- and medium-voice versions.100 years ago, in 1908, he published the third of those, and made final revisions to the first and second. This Dover edition reprints all 60 (medium-voice versions) together. It's especially useful because the E.B.Marks/Belwin reprints of the three volumes are hard to find (with so many publication & distribution changes over the years), and might not even be available anymore; and the Hamelle/Leduc (official) French editions are surely more expensive.Always be careful with Dover's reprints, which in general are of uneven quality as some come from inadequate or undesirable sources; but this volume is a good one.(A bit weak in visual quality, coming from old originals, but strong on authority and completeness.)
