Any decent bookseller should simply refuse to sell this book: printing quality is terrible, it looks like some original was scanned in low resolution. Apart from the too poor printing quality, the distribution of the bars and notes over the width of the pages is sometimes changing by the bar, completely illogical and unmusical and close to impossible to follow while listening to the music.
With only half a centimeter larger and wider, and just 1 mm in thickness, the slightly more expensive Eulenburg edition is a pleasure to work with, and is thus highly recommended to everyone who might even dare to consider buying this dreadful Dover edition.

(More customer reviews)No music truly exists in a book.The composer puts his directions on paper, and the musician tries his best to do what the composer has directed to do.Play this note high, this note low, this note long, this note short, etc.Music is an art that really doesn't exist until it comes to life through the time it takes to perform it.Like a seed, the score of an orchestral work lies dormant until the musician(s) plant it, nurture it through performance.
For the few that can read a score like the rest of us read a newspaper, the music can come alive in the imagination of their inner ear.For the rest of us mortals, following the score while the music plays can help us 'see' the tree come to life with our ears and revel in all of the life and vitality it contains.
The tone poems of Richard Strauss are like vast, sprawling trees.There is no need to follow a score to admire the beauty of the trees.If that were so, symphony orchestras would pass out copies of the score to the audience and keep the lights on.But following the score is like climbing right up into the tree.You can see the diversity, the details, and even look down at the ground and realize where you are.
So to be able to appreciate these masterpieces on a different level, following the score can be a revelation.Dover's edition of these tone poems is inexpensive, of good quality, and I especially like the large format.If you try to follow a miniature score of these works, you best have really great eyes or a magnifying glass.These are vast, romantic works, and Strauss uses a very large orchestra. So the large format is much easier to read and follow.
So if you ever have the urge to get closer to these masterpieces, then by all means let the Dover edition of the scores be your guide.Your efforts to climb the tree will be well rewarded!

(More customer reviews)I got this score because the orchestra I belong to was going to play this piece and thought it'd give me a better understanding of it.This score has a clear description of each tableau and detailed stage directionswhenever the mood or musical theme changes, and has been a great help for me to understand what's happening in this ballet.However, this isan original score and while very helpful as a whole, since my orchestra was playing the revised edidtion, there were many differences between them in instrumentation, sometimes in a number of measures and even time signatures, and sometimes it was very confusing. Although I was glad that I had this score while practicing this piece, I did wish if I'd gotten the revised version.Beware ofthe type of edition you want to read!

(More customer reviews)This appears to be a reprint of the 1915 Purcell Society edition, based on late and unreliable manuscript copies, which were all that were known at the time that edition was prepared.It differs in many small (and a few not-so-small) details from the version commonly performed today. It is also heavily edited with performance indications such as dynamic markings that, while not unmusical, are of more use as a document of Edwardian musical taste than as a guide to Baroque performance practice.

Almost all readers would be better off with the Norton Critical Score edition by Curtis Price for a few dollars more.For preparing performances, the best choices would be the current Purcell Society edition (published by Novello) or the very reasonably priced edition from King's Music.

(More customer reviews)While I strongly disagree with the reviewer who labeled classical music as "snooze-material" (how uncultured do we really wish to paint ourselves as being?), I do agree that the Dover score is a great and inexpensive purchase for anyone wishing to study either symphony.It's interesting to note that Simrock-Dvorak's usual publisher-and Dvorak were at odds over money when the 8th symphony was completed, so he had it published in London by Novello (it is because of this that the work is used to be called Symphony No. 4 and is often referred to as the "English" Symphony), but that all was back to normal by the time he had completed the 9th.Dover reprints both original imprints of the two scores: the 8th Symphony is a Novello reprint (1892) and the 9th Symphony is a Simrock reprint (1894).As is always the case with Dover scores the binding holds up well to backpack abuse and the pages don't tear when your theory professor goes ripping through them discussing formal construction with you.

(More customer reviews)Nice score from Dover. There are some minor corrections made in latest Hansen scores (this is a reprint from first Hansen print), so it is recommended to check them out. More of that I wait for new complete edition, the blue one to come out after copyright issues are over in Europe. The new edition of Sibelius 2nd and Kullervo-Symphony already exists and is highly recommended, although very expensive in big format (the study score of 2nd has just come out as well).

I have to crumple up each page to get enough traction to get them turned.Also the more I use it, some of the pages are beginning to come unbound.Coarser paper and sturdier binding would make this edition more practical for performance and not just as a study score.

Eleven Late String Quartets, Opp. 74, 76 and 77, Complete Review

(More customer reviews)As a musicology student on a budget, I've acquired quite a few Dover scores over the last years. They may be slightly antiquated in many cases, but there's simply no one who can match their prices.

This book, though, represents Dover at their very finest. While the standardized set up for orchestral scores have changed vastly over the years, string quartets have basically remained unchanged since the conception of the form. The only "challenge", from a modern point of view, is reading the violas alto clef, which anyone interested in string quartets should be acquainted with in any case.

The print itself is among the best I've seen from Dover. The edition appears to be an enlarged miniature score, making it very comfortable to follow, and leaves plenty of space for writing notes/analyzes etc. The print itself is very nice, a lot better than my Op. 20 & 33 (Also from Dover), where each print appears to have random flaws that make some few notes almost unreadable. Unlike the 20/33 score, the paper in this score can heavy-handed use of rubbers without erasing any of the print, which of course is a huge plus for people who buy scores like this with the intention of analyzing pieces. (Please notice: This score was bought from a local violin store, where it probably had been sitting for years -at least the price I got it for suggested so-. The printing quality of newer versions MAY be different from this one, although I have no way of telling at the moment)

This print is an old Eulenburg edition, which are known for quality. I have only found one flaw that twarts Haydn's intentions in this edition: I know for a fact that Haydn never put dynamic markings in the variations movement in the Emperor quartet; while I can't say so for certain, it is likely to assume that this should be the case at least for some of the other movements in the book as well. This certainly isn't a big deal, but it does obscure part of Haydn's genius: In this case, he didn't need dynamic markings to bend the player to his will. The points where one should increase or decrease playing strength is embedded in the musical material, and he controls the string quartet to such a degree that different dynamics are never required to get the intended voice into the foreground. I've yet to find any misprints.

This, of course, isn't really a big deal. I suspect that the people who would want this book are people interested in following along with recording or performances, or people who intend to use it for analytical purposes. Naturally, I wouldn't recommend it for performance. The notes are large enough to be viewed at a distance, but it would require way more page turns than required, and these are often put at awkward places. I imagine that it would work well with PhotoScore or similar software though, so you could probably make single-instrument scores out of it with relative ease.

So, unless you want the latest scholarly urtext edition, or want separate parts, this is as good as it gets. At this price, it should be a no-brainer.
