Any decent bookseller should simply refuse to sell this book: printing quality is terrible, it looks like some original was scanned in low resolution. Apart from the too poor printing quality, the distribution of the bars and notes over the width of the pages is sometimes changing by the bar, completely illogical and unmusical and close to impossible to follow while listening to the music.
With only half a centimeter larger and wider, and just 1 mm in thickness, the slightly more expensive Eulenburg edition is a pleasure to work with, and is thus highly recommended to everyone who might even dare to consider buying this dreadful Dover edition.

(More customer reviews)While Dover's many scores represent an amazing value across the musical repertoire, their collection and reprint of the Litolff Edition of the Beethoven Symphonies was a mistake. For the casual buyer they are workable, but not for serious use in performance, as they are riddled with editorial mistakes and problems. Purchaser would be better advised to find a set of the miniature (octavo-sized) Bärenreiter critical scores. They are bound just as nicely and the paper is of excellent quality. I use the full-size Bärenreiter set when I conduct my orchestra.

(More customer reviews)The full score of Rachmaninoff's most popular symphony is a wonderful bargain at Dover's price.(The competing version by Boosey & Hawkes is more than twice as expensive, and hard to find outside of music stores, unlike the popular Dover series.)A problem: a production error resulted in the reprinting of the music on page 73 on page 78; the solution, photocopy page 110 (whose 8 bars are identical to the missing page) and paste it over page 78.Dover has been alerted by me about this error, but apparently errant copies are still in circulation.Also, be alerted that many recordings of this symphony make significant cuts in the music, especially in the outer movements, so be alert if you are using this to follow a recording!

(More customer reviews)No music truly exists in a book.The composer puts his directions on paper, and the musician tries his best to do what the composer has directed to do.Play this note high, this note low, this note long, this note short, etc.Music is an art that really doesn't exist until it comes to life through the time it takes to perform it.Like a seed, the score of an orchestral work lies dormant until the musician(s) plant it, nurture it through performance.
For the few that can read a score like the rest of us read a newspaper, the music can come alive in the imagination of their inner ear.For the rest of us mortals, following the score while the music plays can help us 'see' the tree come to life with our ears and revel in all of the life and vitality it contains.
The tone poems of Richard Strauss are like vast, sprawling trees.There is no need to follow a score to admire the beauty of the trees.If that were so, symphony orchestras would pass out copies of the score to the audience and keep the lights on.But following the score is like climbing right up into the tree.You can see the diversity, the details, and even look down at the ground and realize where you are.
So to be able to appreciate these masterpieces on a different level, following the score can be a revelation.Dover's edition of these tone poems is inexpensive, of good quality, and I especially like the large format.If you try to follow a miniature score of these works, you best have really great eyes or a magnifying glass.These are vast, romantic works, and Strauss uses a very large orchestra. So the large format is much easier to read and follow.
So if you ever have the urge to get closer to these masterpieces, then by all means let the Dover edition of the scores be your guide.Your efforts to climb the tree will be well rewarded!

(More customer reviews)Among the things I look for in a score is the readability of the music itself.The larger the better, though smaller print is acceptable in most classical and earlier pieces and a few Romantic pieces.Not so in Mahler's gigantic symphonies.I feel that the score should be the full size of some of scores of his later symphonies (Dover).There were times where I had to squint or look twice to see the score properly.
That is my only problem with the score.These are two wonderful works and, unlike other composers, Mahler isn't beginning but nearing the peak of his symphonic powers with these "early" works.
This is score is wonderful for music lovers and students alike for it's accessibility and low price.

(More customer reviews)Once I got past the defects of my 1st copy (which had to thus be exchanged), there is no question of this being another gem to add to Dover's collection of fine reprinted 1st-edition scores, with this one to boot having the bonus of having apparently-decent singing-translations in German and English in addition to the original Russian version by Konstántin Bálmont which Sjergjéy Vasíljevich Rakhmáñinov set.[The very fact that the English version used in the score is NOT the original Poe poem-set can indicate just how virtually untranslateable poetry usually happens to be (hence one book trying to do that writing of such attempts as 'a study in failure')!!]The only regret from this non-Italianophile writer is that the the instrumental nomenclature is in Italian (unlike the same original publisher's "Ostróva Mjórtvïkh" {Isle of the Dead}, Op.29, which was basically done in German);however, that's inconsequential.[Another thing that might have been of help could have been to print the two scores in one volume;furthermore, the original publisher Gutheil often lets blank staves fill up pages and systems where perhaps they could have profitably been omitted - but that's not Dover's fault at all...]Otherwise, bravo Dover!!!!

Die Meistersinger von Nurnberg in Full Score Review

(More customer reviews)Along with Die Walkure, I ordered Die Meistersinger to give me a even greater look into German opera. I was extremely impressed with the outcome even though I had been told by many people that it was 'heavy' and I should avoid Wagner at all costs.

I won't get into the nitty-gritty stuff of comedy/tragedy but in comparison to Die Walkure, it's much lighter and quite funny especially when one character (Beckmesser) happens to steal a song written by someone else and on delivering, messes it all up and makes a fool of himself. The themes continue to come back at every oppurtunity and the whole thing links together as one.

Of course Wagner likes his big, fat scores - this one comes in just over 800 pages and the other Dover scores, it opens flat (or reasonably) and doesn't damage the spine, i.e. no creases.
Text is all in German apart from a translation of the contents, characters and orchestration so unless you've mastered the German language, get your hands on a german or music dictionary. See through is minimal. $30 is a very good bargain for such a big score.

Das Rheingold in Full Score Review

Among other things, it offers filmmakers, such as George Lucas, a model of how to create an epic drama involving multiple generations of characters, which nonetheless holdstogether on stage (or, for Lucas' purposes, on film). To my taste, some ofthe Ring's most memorable moments, both musically and dramatically, arefound in Das Rheingold. Dover reprinted the B. Schott's Sohne edition fromthe late 19th century. Schott's was Wagner's original publisher, ergo, thisedition was subject to approval by Wagner himself. It's a large book, andit might well be possible to conduct from it. The book is, as always withDover, well crafted, easy to read, and printed on acid-free, fade-resistantpaper. There are English translations of the frontismatter, but no Germanglossary of musical terms. In many of my recent Dover reviews, I havefailed to mention that the score is reasonably priced. The reason I haven'tis because with Dover, that simply goes without saying.

(More customer reviews)While I strongly disagree with the reviewer who labeled classical music as "snooze-material" (how uncultured do we really wish to paint ourselves as being?), I do agree that the Dover score is a great and inexpensive purchase for anyone wishing to study either symphony.It's interesting to note that Simrock-Dvorak's usual publisher-and Dvorak were at odds over money when the 8th symphony was completed, so he had it published in London by Novello (it is because of this that the work is used to be called Symphony No. 4 and is often referred to as the "English" Symphony), but that all was back to normal by the time he had completed the 9th.Dover reprints both original imprints of the two scores: the 8th Symphony is a Novello reprint (1892) and the 9th Symphony is a Simrock reprint (1894).As is always the case with Dover scores the binding holds up well to backpack abuse and the pages don't tear when your theory professor goes ripping through them discussing formal construction with you.

This edition of the translated original score allows you a betterunderstanding of this revolutionary musical monsterpiece, with visualcomplement to what your ears couldn't even consider figuring out. Sometimesit's simpler than you would imagine; sometimes it's much, much morecomplex. This work taught me a great deal about music composition &arranging, and the book also allowed me to write a reduction of the"Spring Rounds" for a 7-piece band.

(More customer reviews)The music is of course fantastic, but I was dissapointed by the quality of the printing in this volume. Sometimes note stems are virtually nonexistent, and the very small verbal instructions are almost impossible to read. The reason for this is not Dover's fault; it's because this book was printed directly from ancient master plates of the original French editions. In fact, all of Dover's "reproductions of old French editions" series seem to share the same problems. Yet none of Dover's German editions has the problem. Oh well, I guess all I can say is: Let the Buyer Beware.

Five Orchestral Pieces and Pelleas und Melisande in Full Score Review

(More customer reviews)Of the two pieces reprinted from Universal and Peters respectively in this volume, it's the former - the tone poem "Pelléas und Mélisande" (Op.5), using the same subject matter as Debussy's opera - that's the more accessible.It follows logically upon "Verklärte Nacht" (Op.4) and "Gurrelieder" (no opus number) both in terms of Schönberg's evolution as a composer from his home-base of Late-Romanticism to Expressionism (a sort of intensified Romanticism) and also in terms of his gradual departure from tonality.This departure didn't happen overnight (though it still was quick! - from "Verklärte Nacht", which is still quite tonal although it modulates a lot, to the "Songs of the Book of the Hanging-Gardens", where complete atonality is achieved, it took only 7 years!).However, once it happened, he never (with one exception - that of a piece commissioned by a school orchestra in the USA) returned to any true sort of tonality.

This earlier piece is still tonal, but it already is more dissonant and less key-anchored compared to the other two works mentioned already, notably Part 1 of "Gurrelieder" (excluding the Song of the Wood-Dove) as well as "Verklärte Nacht".There are fewer traditional cadential-type passages - even at the ending one has no true "V-I" progression of any sort to establish the final d-minor key.Those that remain are ever-more overlaid with (chromatically-linked) dissonance and less pre-cadential preparation so as to make key-establishment less and less definitive (let alone secure!).[Even in the first two pages of the score one can't say that the tonality of d-minor is truly established at all!]

Apparently it was this element that excited Schönberg just as much as inverting the whole idea of music to emphasise dissonance over consonance:whereas the traditional idea is to resolve dissonances into consonances, atonality utterly reverses that flow (with Schönberg, even minor dissonances eventually resolve into stronger discords)!It is this very idea of in essence turning the entire concept of music upside-down that is the essence of such works as virtually everything after Opus 14.So it is with the Three Piano-Pieces of Opus 11, the "Songs of the Book of the Hanging-Gardens" (Opus 15), and - in our case - the Five Orchestral Pieces of Opus 16.Here not only any sort of consonance and tonality is utterly abrogated:the music becomes virtually athematic to boot...

[As a curiosity (if I recall correctly):when Opus 16 was published initially, it was suggested to Schönberg that the individual movements have titles bestowed on them (not given in this publication).The result are the following "non-titles":1) Vorgefuhle (Premonition);2) Vergangenes (What's Past);3) Sommerfarben (Summer-Colours);4) Peripetie (Perpetual-Motion?);5) das Obligate Rezitative (The Obligato Recitative).]

In all events, there's positively no better bargain in getting to know these pieces than to have this score, which reproduces the definitive editions of both pieces, in hand!!Most unreservedly recommended!!!
