Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2 in Full Score (Dover Orchestral Scores) Review

Symphonies Nos. 1 and 2 in Full Score [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Among the things I look for in a score is the readability of the music itself. The larger the better, though smaller print is acceptable in most classical and earlier pieces and a few Romantic pieces. Not so in Mahler's gigantic symphonies.I feel that the score should be the full size of some of scores of his later symphonies (Dover). There were times where I had to squint or look twice to see the score properly.
That is my only problem with the score. These are two wonderful works and, unlike other composers, Mahler isn't beginning but nearing the peak of his symphonic powers with these "early" works.
This is score is wonderful for music lovers and students alike for it's accessibility and low price.

Petrushka (Dover Miniature Scores) Review

Petrushka [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

I got this score because the orchestra I belong to was going to play this piece and thought it'd give me a better understanding of it.This score has a clear description of each tableau and detailed stage directionswhenever the mood or musical theme changes, and has been a great help for me to understand what's happening in this ballet. However, this isan original score and while very helpful as a whole, since my orchestra was playing the revised edidtion, there were many differences between them in instrumentation, sometimes in a number of measures and even time signatures, and sometimes it was very confusing. Although I was glad that I had this score while practicing this piece, I did wish if I'd gotten the revised version.Beware ofthe type of edition you want to read!

Antonin Dvorak SYMPHONIES NOS.8 AND 9 ("NEW WORLD") in Full Score Review

Antonin Dvorak SYMPHONIES NOS.8 AND 9 in Full Score [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

While I strongly disagree with the reviewer who labeled classical music as "snooze-material" (how uncultured do we really wish to paint ourselves as being?), I do agree that the Dover score is a great and inexpensive purchase for anyone wishing to study either symphony. It's interesting to note that Simrock-Dvorak's usual publisher-and Dvorak were at odds over money when the 8th symphony was completed, so he had it published in London by Novello (it is because of this that the work is used to be called Symphony No. 4 and is often referred to as the "English" Symphony), but that all was back to normal by the time he had completed the 9th.Dover reprints both original imprints of the two scores: the 8th Symphony is a Novello reprint (1892) and the 9th Symphony is a Simrock reprint (1894).As is always the case with Dover scores the binding holds up well to backpack abuse and the pages don't tear when your theory professor goes ripping through them discussing formal construction with you.

"Polovtsian Dances" and "In the Steppes of Central Asia" in Full Score Review

'Polovtsian Dances' and 'In the Steppes of Central Asia' in Full Score [Paperback]

Borodin's list of musical works was very short but his brilliant works like "Polovtsian Dances" and "In the Steppes of Central Asia" shown in this study score more than make up for it.I keep both pieces close to my heart. They are some of the most colorful and beautiful music ever made, never straying from their ethnic and Russian roots.By reading and studying Dover's wonderful release of the original score I can further appreciate the mastery of his works. The only small gripe is that the Polovtsian Dances score left off a small introduction piece that was included in the recording of it I had.Regardless, this score is essential for any serious classical music lover.

The Rite of Spring in Full Score Review

The Rite of Spring in Full Score [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For anyone who loves music in general as much as I do, Stravinsky's Rite Of Spring can be, to say the least, a shockingly intense listening experience, full of strangely dissonant polytonal simultaneities, overwhelming rhythmic dephasing, and colorful details and timbristiceffects that take maximum advantage of what a great symphony orchestra hasto offer. This edition of the translated original score allows you a betterunderstanding of this revolutionary musical monsterpiece, with visualcomplement to what your ears couldn't even consider figuring out. Sometimesit's simpler than you would imagine; sometimes it's much, much morecomplex. This work taught me a great deal about music composition &arranging, and the book also allowed me to write a reduction of the"Spring Rounds" for a 7-piece band.

William Tell and Other Overtures in Full Score Review

William Tell and Other Overtures in Full Score [Paperback]

Dover scores are always a great bargain. I'm conducting from this score. I haven't noticed that the pages are hard to turn as one reviewer mentioned. You should know that the William Tell is Breitkopf and Hartel, not the Rossini critical edition. Of special interest is the fact that Rossini has 5 solo cellos in the beginning accompanied by the rest of the cello section and basses. In the Breitkopf score, the ripieno cellos are given to the top of divisi basses. No problem. Lucks and Kalmus parts use the Breitkopf arrangement.

The Six Brandenburg Concertos and the Four Orchestral Suites in Full Score (Dover Orchestral Scores) Review

The Six Brandenburg Concertos and the Four Orchestral Suites in Full Score [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As stated in the title, this book contains the complete score for all 6 Brandenburg Concerti and all 4 Orchestral Suites by Bach.Parts are not included nor are they available separately from Dover.
It is in modern notation with very clear, dark printing. It is a large-format (approx. 8 1/2 x 11) paperback book and is bound like most paperbacks.
As with all Dover Editions, it is very easy to read and follow the music, but it was not designed as a performing score.Because of the binding (it won't lie flat) and because no attention was given to page turns, it is very difficult to play from. But if you wish to study the music or follow the score while listening to your favorite recording, you can't beat this edition for the money.

For the price (I paid $99) I give this program 5 stars.I will eventually buy Miroslav Philharmonic and more IK stuff because I like this plug-in so much.

I've heard more than one person say that the activation process is very difficult---I had no such problem.Well, I did have one problem, but it turned out to be my fault---as usual. However, I have some company IT experience. But like I said, for me the process was way easy.

The sounds are the best I've heard for the price; looks cool, as well. This plug-in has a lot of nifty options to mess around with.It woks 99.9% perfect in my Sonar Producer.I've never had a program of any kind work at a 100%.It's an instrument, and like an instrument it has its own little quirks---just like Fenders and Gibsons do.Practice-practice-practice!

For reading musicians this program is especially great. It orchestrates excellently.Very well done!

It's great for ANY serious musician though---amateur or pro.

A well presented , easy to follow score. This is a must for any lover of this concerto. It is worth buying to appreciate both the simplicity and complexity of the piano part. Franz Liszt apparently played it at sight - how good was he! Great product - highly recommended.

Product Description:
This stirring concerto is one of the most popular ever written, and one of the most recognizable of all musical works in the standard repertoire. It is filled with youthful ebullience-Grieg was 25 when he composed it-and great melodic inspiration, much of it derived from Norway's rich folk music tradition. Deeply Romantic, with thrilling melodies and rich harmonies, it is the only piano concerto Grieg would compose. Reprinted here from the authoritative full-score edition published by C. F. Peters of Leipzig.

This book is outstanding. It reads well and is of use.I have suggested it to several of my elementary teacher friends because I think it will help them as their career into music education takes off.

The book has useful information and it is presented in a way that is easy to read and understand - and importantly implement.I particularly like the approach used to write the book - it does NOT talk down to the reader, rather it helps by delivering a positive tone in a clear manner.

Not every teacher begins teaching music at the elementary level, as the name might suggest.Consider purchasing this book if your teach music at the beginning level (either elementary, middle school, or high school) because there are useful tidbits for every beginning teacher.
