The Six Brandenburg Concertos and the Four Orchestral Suites in Full Score (Dover Orchestral Scores) Review

The Six Brandenburg Concertos and the Four Orchestral Suites in Full Score [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As stated in the title, this book contains the complete score for all 6 Brandenburg Concerti and all 4 Orchestral Suites by Bach.Parts are not included nor are they available separately from Dover.
It is in modern notation with very clear, dark printing. It is a large-format (approx. 8 1/2 x 11) paperback book and is bound like most paperbacks.
As with all Dover Editions, it is very easy to read and follow the music, but it was not designed as a performing score.Because of the binding (it won't lie flat) and because no attention was given to page turns, it is very difficult to play from. But if you wish to study the music or follow the score while listening to your favorite recording, you can't beat this edition for the money.

I appreciate what the Kalmus press has done to give helpful footnotes for the ornamentation and the score layout is very clean and spaced well. A good "easy" read, that is relatively easy...if you know the pieces in this book you'll know what I'm talking about!

The Art of the Fugue & A Musical Offering Review

The Art of the Fugue & A Musical Offering [Paperback]

This is a jewel; a paperback (with Dover's usual great binding quality) that contains both the Art of Fugue and the Musical Offering.
The Art of Fugue was originally written in open score, to emphasize that theperformance instrument was not specified. This edition gives the openscore with a two-stave (piano-type) reduction below.
Of course, with asolid binding like that, it's not going to stay open on your piano.
Ifyou want to play / doodle the great Contrapunctus 1 from TAOF (like I did),and if you've got the hairclips to keep the pages down (like I wish I did),this book is for you!Gofer it. Arch

After many readings and performances from other editions, the Watkins Shawedition stands out as being the most authoritative and being the closest tothe original score with most, if not all, of Handel's original markings. Having studied both Schirmer and Oxford editions, this edition has the mostto offer the true musical purist, especially from an accompanimentalstandpoint. The six page preface is extremely helpful in pinpointingperformance notes to exacting ornamentation to accurate rhythmicinterpretations.A must have for your choral music library!

The Well-Tempered Clavier: Books I and II, Complete Review

The Well-Tempered Clavier: Books I and II, Complete [Paperback]

Another incredible bargain from Dover. Although I think their edition of the Beethoven complete string quartets (in a single volume!) is probably the best buy in all of music, this edition of The Well Tempered Clavier is a strong competitor. (If only it had included The Art of Fugue!) This is the edition I recommend for my students because of the clarity, absence of artificial or misleading editorial markings, ease of page turns, and cost. It is not perfect; what edition EVER is--in this case, one of my quibbles is that of all the minor key fugues, only ONE (g# minor) ends without a piccardy (raised) third--it simply must be an oversight, and interestingly the accidental already present in the key signature is repeated unnecessarily. Surely B natural should have been B sharp in the final measure. Regardless of the slight problems, this is the single best tool to learn Baroque counterpoint in general and fugue specifically. No textbook I know of is capable of demonstrating the fluidity of form, nor describing the sophistication of melodic and contrapuntal writing that Bach employs. Every book I know of oversimplifies or even avoids the issues that Bach so admirably handles. The answers are here, in the music, not in a text. Absolutely invaluable for the serious music student.
