The Winds of Change: The Evolution of the Contemporary American Wind Band/Ensemble and its Conductor [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is a must for any band director or conductor who is a scholar and would like to know where our craft came from.It brings up details about composers and their significant contributions to our genre. The challenges wind literature faced in its early stages were significant and this book will walk you through who was a significant part of that process and who refused to be a part of that process.

The Winds of Change will also state significant pieces of literature that The Goldman Band, The Sousa Band, and many others were performing while the genre was still in its infancy. This is a must for any conductor that wishes to move beyond waving the stick.

Improving Intonation in Band and Orchestra Performance (Meredith Music Resource) Review

Improving Intonation in Band and Orchestra Performance [Paperback]

A very good book - mostly for band directors, although the author gives some insights on orchestral performance. Would be great if there were more practical exercises. Instruments charts seem to be a bit scholastic.

A DAY TO REMEMBER: Piano Music for your Wedding Day Review

A DAY TO REMEMBER: Piano Music for your Wedding Day [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a good resource for solo pianists who play a lot of weddings.I bought it after getting multiple requests for music "like the O'Neill Brothers."The problem is, half the songs that you will be asked for are in the 2nd volume, so you'll have to buy two books (this seems to be a way to get more money per song, rather than publishing them all in a single volume). That being said, a single wedding should cover the cost of the both books.A few of the songs* have an optional instrumental part to complete the arrangement.

A Day To Remember includes:
Falling in Love
Wachet Auf (Sleepers, Awake)
Air on the G String
Air (from _Water Music_)
Reminiscent Joy
Canon in D*
Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring*
The Wedding Song (There Is Love)
Ave Maria*
I Will Be Here
The Gift of Love*
Spring (from _The Four Seasons_)
Ode to Joy
From This Moment On
The Way You Look Tonight
Forever in Love

The arrangements are intermediate to advanced.Comparing the transcriptions with other Hal Leonard editions that I have, I find that the Airs are the same as in other HL books. The transcriptions of JesuJoy of Man's Desiring and Ave Maria are slightly arranged for the 2nd instrument, and Canon in D is heavily arranged.I have never seen a piano transcription of Spring before. It is the most difficult piece in the book, and the least pianistic, but it still makes for a great recessional with a little bit of practice and metronome work. For a piece that could be potentially difficult to reduce to piano, the transcription is fairly accurate and satisfying.

My biggest complaint is that with only three days of gentle use, the spine is already cracking.I fear the book will not last through its first ceremony, and I may have to photocopy the pages and put them into a notebook for practical use.

Guitar/Flute Duets MFM 69 (Classical Guitar) Review

Guitar/Flute Duets MFM 69 [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This two-book set (one for guitar and one for flute) has the sheet music of 47 duets for intermediate players.
`Guitar and Flute Duets'is an excellent and long-lasting value, especially if you play the flute and have a classical guitar player in the house, or of course vice versa.
I'm anintermediate player resuming after many years of inactivity: I found Icould play many of the Bach, Mozart and Beethoven pieces in the collection.None were too easy to be boring, and some were just beyond reach at first.I also enjoyed the Dowland, Handel, and there's a really great slow sensualCorelli piece too.
There are also pieces byPurcell, Telemann, Chopin,Schubert, Granados, Tarrega and others, some waltzes and Spanish pieceswhich we haven't played at all. I'm just mentioning them so you can get anidea of the range of music in the book.

Art of Elementary Band Directing (Meredith Music Resource) Review

Art of Elementary Band Directing [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

This book is outstanding. It reads well and is of use.I have suggested it to several of my elementary teacher friends because I think it will help them as their career into music education takes off.

The book has useful information and it is presented in a way that is easy to read and understand - and importantly implement.I particularly like the approach used to write the book - it does NOT talk down to the reader, rather it helps by delivering a positive tone in a clear manner.

Not every teacher begins teaching music at the elementary level, as the name might suggest.Consider purchasing this book if your teach music at the beginning level (either elementary, middle school, or high school) because there are useful tidbits for every beginning teacher.

Flute and Guitar Duets for Any Occasion (Classical Guitar) Review

Flute and Guitar Duets for Any Occasion [Paperback]

...but the cd requires a player with the ability to isolate L/R tracks if you want to play with the cd. If you have an actual partner to play with it's a great book.I thought the arrangements for flute were pretty good, some are a little in the low range of the instrument. They are mostly early intermediate to intermediate, nothing too tough technically. I don't play guitar so I can't speak for the guitar parts. The cd is nice to listen to if not useful to play with. I love the arrangements of "The trees they do grow high" and "The Foggy Dew".

ESSENTIAL WEDDING COLLECTION PRELUDES PROCESSIONALS & RECESSIONALS PIANO SOLO (Piano Solo Songbook) Review

ESSENTIAL WEDDING COLLECTION PRELUDES PROCESSIONALS & RECESSIONALS PIANO SOLO [Sheet music]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this book several years ago, and it remains a challenge and a good resource to this day. The pieces are advanced (although some are far easier than others)and need rehearsal, but none are impossible. Some are arrangements (although never poppy or jazzy), and others are printed exactly as the composer intended.

Here you will find works by Beethoven, Handel, and Mozart, as you would expect, but you also find Debussy, Edward Elgar, and Gustav Holst. The Essential Wedding Collection contains both the Wedding March by Mendelssohn and the Bridal Chorus by Richard Wagnar.

I've always been proud to include a piece from this book at my performances at churches, weddings, or memorial services. These pieces are dignified and beautiful, and very playable. If you're a high level pianist, you'll find this book to be very useful.
