(More customer reviews)If you're looking for books on "how to" play bass or read music then skip this one.There's almost no instruction in this book, but what you do get is GREAT tab and notation for some standard jazz pieces.
This book is good for learning the traditional bass lines and for practicing your timing/tempo when there's no one else around.I wish the CD had two versions of each song (one with and one without bass), but it doesn't.For the price, though, this is a pretty good way to learn some songs and practice without having a full band in your garage.
Nine standard jazz pieces are covered.Each song comes with the actual tune on CD, the printed song with bass clef and tab, and if that weren't enough you also get the bass solo and lead sheet.
Be careful, though, the lead sheet is not in tablature, so you should already know (or be willing to learn) how to read traditional music notation.Fortunately, since the book includes both the full version (notation and tablature) you can easily go back and forth as you progress.The lead sheet is great for taking on stage since it has all the essentials for the song on one easy to read sheet.

I wanted the CD and had to return this book and reorder the correct version. Minus one star for Amazon packaging this in a special with Book 3 which comes with a CD while this one doesn't. Very misleading.

(More customer reviews)Ok... at first it looks like a book full of classic blues lines and patterns. But after a while you find out it challenges you to build your own blues lines using JJ's basic techniques for creating tension over the song (lead-in, pick ups, hassitations etc...)

It also stresses on the importance of timing, which is crucial for succeeding to play the harder basslines that are included in the middle and at the end of the book. I studied on this one for months to really understand the basics of it. Great fun for the bassfanatics!!!!!

If you expect some guidance concerning funk bass playing, you will be very disatisfied.For funk bass instruction try the Francis Rocco Prestis (Fingerstyle Funk - VHS only) and Alex Sklarevski (Slap Bass) videos..both are great.

(More customer reviews)I play bass in a jazz rehearsal band and we're working through a list called "The New York Ninety", which a gigging New York jazz musician put together.It represents all the tunes you just have to know if you want to gig seriously on the New York Jazz scene.

Not one of the tunes on the New York Ninety appears in the Real Book Volume 3.Volumes 1 and 2 cover a ton of the New York ninety, with The Real Book Volume having the lion's share.A lot of the new York Ninety are found in the New Real Book series by Chuck Sher.

There were some tunes I recognized in The Real Book Volume 3, like What a Wonderful World, A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, Norwegian Wood, Continuum (Pastorius), Teen Town, Watermelon Man, A Taste of Honey, Java Jive, Just a Gigolo, Just the Two of Us, and Harlem Nocturne.But not a compellling number of tunes that I found really useful for a band trying to break into the "just show and gig" jazz scene.

I bought Volumes 1 and 2 of the Real Book and didn't feel at all disappointed, but with Volume 3; I wish I'd have spent the money on something else.It's almost as if Hal Leonard is trying to cash in on the popularity of The Real book brand to keep the series going with a Volume 3.I'd think REAL HARD before buying Volume 4, if one comes out eventually -- my guess is they'll be scraping the bottom of the barrel of jazz tunes to create a good Volume 4 -- and I'd have to see the list of songs before I put my money down for that one.

So, the Real Book Volume 3 was a real disappointment for me.I'd rather someone put out a fake book of contemporary smooth jazz artists so bands can start playing some new music along with the old standards that have been played and played and played.....transcribing all that new stuff is just way too time consuming.

While VicWooten is probably one of the best bass players of today, mostly because ofhis technique, this is not a Wooten showcase of his wonderful playingabilits, in this cd Vic plays slow melodies or low grooves unlike his solocds where his shows off his technique. This cd is very enjoyable speciallyfor bass players or those who wants to experience bass guitar as a leadinginstrument in jazz fusion music.

(More customer reviews)This book has a ton of fun etudes and exercises to play through.They book is great sight reading practice because there are so many etudes that you can play a few every day and not repeat any for a long time.

The only thing that I slightly dislike is that there is very little information about the style that each etude should be played in.I think that's the point of the book; to teach you to figure out how to play melodically without relying on what is indicated on the page.But sometimes you just don't know.It says "Medium slow ballad," but is it straight or swung?The tempo is indicated as half-note = 100, and some of the rhythms look latin, so should I play it with a latin feel?This is only a minor problem though because usually it is pretty clear and I guess I am learning to make style decisions myself, which is good.The book might be better if some etudes are played with the guidance of a teacher though; I just play by myself so I can't judge that.

Overall, very good jazz book for trombone.

(More customer reviews)I have been waiting for this book for thirty years. I missed it the first time around when it was published in the late 1970s. Luckily it has been reprinted.

It is fairly complex due to the nature of the music and the mini score notation. However, should you want to play some of John McLaughlin's music and or understand its structure this book is a good place to start.

The scores have been produced with a great deal of care. Most of the scores are laid out with the 'normal' early Mahavishnu Orchestra instrumentation (bass, drums, guitar, keyboards, and violin). The scores seem to have been faithfully produced from the original recordings, and additional parts have been given where necessary. Useful key/mode guides for ad libbing have also been given.
