(More customer reviews)If you want some extra insight into how these songs are played, these books are always great. But I'm always shocked when these things have so many minor errors. Most notably in this book, the guitar chords for the verse of "I'll Stick Around" are the incorrect form, which is disappointing because the actual chords sound really cool when played correctly. Personally, I see a mistake like that and lose faith in the whole thing. Maybe I'm too picky but if I pay money for a score, I want it to be exact.

Overall, the book gives you a great start when learning these parts if you're struggling figuring it out on your own. But some of the tougher details are really left up to you to figure out.

(More customer reviews)If you're looking for books on "how to" play bass or read music then skip this one.There's almost no instruction in this book, but what you do get is GREAT tab and notation for some standard jazz pieces.
This book is good for learning the traditional bass lines and for practicing your timing/tempo when there's no one else around.I wish the CD had two versions of each song (one with and one without bass), but it doesn't.For the price, though, this is a pretty good way to learn some songs and practice without having a full band in your garage.
Nine standard jazz pieces are covered.Each song comes with the actual tune on CD, the printed song with bass clef and tab, and if that weren't enough you also get the bass solo and lead sheet.
Be careful, though, the lead sheet is not in tablature, so you should already know (or be willing to learn) how to read traditional music notation.Fortunately, since the book includes both the full version (notation and tablature) you can easily go back and forth as you progress.The lead sheet is great for taking on stage since it has all the essentials for the song on one easy to read sheet.

(More customer reviews)The release of this book coincided with a big promotional push by Jimi's heirs and some people use this as proof that it's all drivel written by those trying to once again capitalize on the Hendrix legacy.Wait a minute - I thought all of the music, books, memorabelia, etc., were being sold to cash in on Jimi?Actually, this is a nice package, although it's no competition for the very best books out there, either from the perspective of photography or history, but it was lovingly assembled and lavishly decorated.Certainly, it is worthwhile for the Hendrix collector, especially considering how inexpensively it can be had as a used purchase from amazon or on ebay.

I specifically wanted to learn to play Barney Kessel's "On a Slow Boat to China" as it appears on the 1954 Barney Kessel album, Kessel Plays Standards. The transcription is dead on and I am happily soloing to my heart's content. The CD play-along backing band is fun to jam with. Well worth the money.

(More customer reviews)This is one of the best playalong packages I've come across. With Dave Weckl on drums, John Patitucci on bass and Mike Stern on guitar, all of whom are truly world class musicians. I'm not a particularly avid fan of Mike Stern, but this is one of those books that every electric guitarist should consider adding to their library. The emphasis is on melody playing and soloing, rather than comping, but there are chord box grids for all of the tunes.

The tunes are generic style examples rather than "real" compositions, but they work great as jam/playalong vehicles. And make no mistake about it, Mike Stern is really playing his *** off on these tunes! The back cover gives the impression that this aimed at the "beginner to intermediate-level guitarist", but there's plenty of stuff to feast on for advanced players as well, in my opinion. The sixteenth-note triplets runs in "Hip Hop (Jazz Funk)" is truly jaw-dropping, but almost equally impressive is the beautiful melodic phrasing of "Pop Ballad".

All the solos are transcribed (with tablature), and the transcriptions are very accurate. I think it's deeply unfair that the transcriber hardly ever gets mentioned by name in reviews, but at least this reviewer would like to give mr. Dale Turner credit for his excellent work!

My only complaint with the package is the somewhat cheap paper quality. This book deserves better! But in any case you should buy it before it gets out of print,you won't regret it.

Funk: Guitar Play-Along Volume 52 Review

(More customer reviews)I got this cause I hoped for a fast way to learn some funk rifs. It turned out to be a lot more then I expected as these are totally fun to play and do actually sound like the songs the way you are used to hearing them. The play along cd provides a version of the song with the guitar and without so you can play as the 'only' guitar once you are ready.And the cd also supplies a 'lite' verson of 'amazing slow downer' software that you can load on your PC and use to change the tempo of the CD or loop parts you want extra practice on till you get the tune going the way you want it. It's the easiest version of tempo changing software I've tried and required zero learning curve, very much plug and play. This book is totally worth it and I also recommend the "soul" and "rhytmn and blues" versions of the books as well - as this 'method' is part of a HL series which uses a collection of pop tunes and play along cds to help you build well rounded guitar comp'ing skills in a variety of pop styles.

If you want more extensive information about the exact notes being played on recorded versions of these songs, you will be disappointed. I am a huge fan of Tom Petty and I own several song books with his music. This book has the highest number of songs, but limited detail on the different guitar parts and actual notes. This book is good for the campfire acoustic guitarist, but not appropriate for someone interested in really mastering the guitar work of Tom Petty and Mike Campbell.
