(More customer reviews)While the average Hendrix fan might not be interested in the details of how Electric Ladyland was made, for the musician this DVD is priceless. If you've seen "The Making of Sgt Pepper" and liked it, this is asimilar treatment of Electric Ladyland. You get to hear individual tracksand interviews from the engineer and band members on how it was all done.Eddie Kramer, Mitch, Noel, all talking about their memories. You also get aglimpse into the personality of Hendrix that is very different than thewild man image. This movie has given me even more appreciation of thismusical masterpiece.

(More customer reviews)The release of this book coincided with a big promotional push by Jimi's heirs and some people use this as proof that it's all drivel written by those trying to once again capitalize on the Hendrix legacy.Wait a minute - I thought all of the music, books, memorabelia, etc., were being sold to cash in on Jimi?Actually, this is a nice package, although it's no competition for the very best books out there, either from the perspective of photography or history, but it was lovingly assembled and lavishly decorated.Certainly, it is worthwhile for the Hendrix collector, especially considering how inexpensively it can be had as a used purchase from amazon or on ebay.

(More customer reviews)I'm kind of mixed about how to review this book. It is very insightful to the musician and hard core Hendrix fan on what it took, and what it still takes to be successful in music. It can be summed up in this fact; It takes COMPLETE dedication. This book shows this; that Jimi Hendrix was completley dedicated to the craft of playiing guitar. It would be impossible to chroncicle all the time he practiced and jammed but this book chronicles as accurately as possible all of his performances and recording sessions(which was almost every day when he wasn't touring) and alot of his jam sessions. The detail is absolutely fantastic, you can't help but be impressed with the amazing amount of research that went into this chronological record of Hendrix' musical activites. As a musician and Hendrix fan I was fascintated by this book and couldn't put it down. Of course the story's sad ending was clearly portrayed, and even seemed more tragic when you read of the progress Hendrix was making on his next record and the promising futre he had with the realization of his dream of Electric Ladyland Studios. Just as a side note I hope even people today can learn the lesson that the lifestyle of moral lack of restraint and a godless lifestyle (to lack of a better way to put it) can only end badly... Ok that's my plug for God for now..
I do wonder if one was just a casual Hendrix fan or not aspiring, recording musician as I am would find any relevance or interest in this book. So to summarize, I'd say that this book is exremely well researched and well written, but it would have a very limited appeal, probably interesting to musicians and/or hard core Hendrix fans only.

My Son Jimi (Book) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this book yesterday and finished it today. I have always felt, for reasons I could never really explain, that Jimi had a kindred spirit with my own. His father's recollections on Jimi's early life let me knowwhy.I'm so glad Mr. Al Hendrix wrote this book. The lies about Jimi arelegion. I remember in the 60's that most of what I heard about him had todo with drugs. It's a real shame that you have to explore a person's lifelike a detective (in a country with a supposedly "free" press) tofind out what they were really like. There is one thing I really likedabout the Hendrix family the book revealed; their free and easyinteractions with non-blacks. No wonder Jimi's music and message wasuniversal. In a time when blacks and whites seem to be once againwithdrawing into their own groups I found the Hendrix family to be veryrefreshing. Being black myself I totally reject the pressures broughtagainst me to participate only in things stamped with the "black"seal of approval. And I'd like to salute Al Hendrix for being a real fatherand taking care of his family, even children he didn't sire. A lot of mentoday wouldn't do what he did. Jimi was very fortunate to have such afather and I think he knew it. Thank you Mr. Hendrix for sharing your lifeand that of your son with us on a more intimate level. I for one willalways love Jimi and hold a fondness for him in my heart. And now for youas well.

Learn to Play Like the Guitar Greats: The Essential Guide to Chords, Equipment and Techniques Review

(More customer reviews)So I picked up this book based on what it advertised (which, I realise, is what most people do when buying a book, but bear with me here) and I was let down to an unimaginable degree. This book, "Learn to Play Like the Guitar Greats" is totally misleading. If you are expecting to actually LEARN some guitar riffs, guess again. This book is more of an abridged guide to some (and buy some, I mean only a select few) of the greatest guitarists around. Or is it? For some reason, the extremely un-talented Jack Black of the White Stripes made it into this book, yet Eddie Van Halen, Ted Nugent, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Tom Morello, Frank Zappa, Yngwie Malmstien, Randy Rhodes and Eric Johnson (to name only a few) were omitted. As for actual guitar riffs, the list grows shorter still. The book talks about some of the greatest guitar riffs written by Jimmy Page such as "The Song Remains the Same" and "Heartbreaker" as well as a look at his amazing double-neck SG, but when it comes to the guitar tab, we get a very weak selection of songs-"Kashmir" and "Stairway to Heaven"-both of which, like all the other tablature in this book, contain only the opening riffs. A better title for this book would have been "Learn About the Most Overplayed/Recognisable Guitarists and a Few Simple Riffs that They Wrote". In all seriousness (with my apologies to Amazon for discouraging the purchase of this book) I cannot stress enough what a waste of money this book is. I would have given this book a 0/5 rating, but apparently, that doesn't exist. Besides, how can you possibly take a book like this seriously if they claim the guitarist behind Black Sabbath is Tony Iommi (it's TOMMY, for those who weren't sure).
