If you've seen "The Making of Sgt Pepper" and liked it, this is asimilar treatment of Electric Ladyland. You get to hear individual tracksand interviews from the engineer and band members on how it was all done.Eddie Kramer, Mitch, Noel, all talking about their memories. You also get aglimpse into the personality of Hendrix that is very different than thewild man image. This movie has given me even more appreciation of thismusical masterpiece.

(More customer reviews)The release of this book coincided with a big promotional push by Jimi's heirs and some people use this as proof that it's all drivel written by those trying to once again capitalize on the Hendrix legacy.Wait a minute - I thought all of the music, books, memorabelia, etc., were being sold to cash in on Jimi?Actually, this is a nice package, although it's no competition for the very best books out there, either from the perspective of photography or history, but it was lovingly assembled and lavishly decorated.Certainly, it is worthwhile for the Hendrix collector, especially considering how inexpensively it can be had as a used purchase from amazon or on ebay.

(More customer reviews)I'm kind of mixed about how to review this book. It is very insightful to the musician and hard core Hendrix fan on what it took, and what it still takes to be successful in music. It can be summed up in this fact; It takes COMPLETE dedication. This book shows this; that Jimi Hendrix was completley dedicated to the craft of playiing guitar. It would be impossible to chroncicle all the time he practiced and jammed but this book chronicles as accurately as possible all of his performances and recording sessions(which was almost every day when he wasn't touring) and alot of his jam sessions. The detail is absolutely fantastic, you can't help but be impressed with the amazing amount of research that went into this chronological record of Hendrix' musical activites. As a musician and Hendrix fan I was fascintated by this book and couldn't put it down. Of course the story's sad ending was clearly portrayed, and even seemed more tragic when you read of the progress Hendrix was making on his next record and the promising futre he had with the realization of his dream of Electric Ladyland Studios. Just as a side note I hope even people today can learn the lesson that the lifestyle of moral lack of restraint and a godless lifestyle (to lack of a better way to put it) can only end badly... Ok that's my plug for God for now..
I do wonder if one was just a casual Hendrix fan or not aspiring, recording musician as I am would find any relevance or interest in this book. So to summarize, I'd say that this book is exremely well researched and well written, but it would have a very limited appeal, probably interesting to musicians and/or hard core Hendrix fans only.

My Son Jimi (Book) Review

(More customer reviews)I bought this book yesterday and finished it today. I have always felt, for reasons I could never really explain, that Jimi had a kindred spirit with my own. His father's recollections on Jimi's early life let me knowwhy.I'm so glad Mr. Al Hendrix wrote this book. The lies about Jimi arelegion. I remember in the 60's that most of what I heard about him had todo with drugs. It's a real shame that you have to explore a person's lifelike a detective (in a country with a supposedly "free" press) tofind out what they were really like. There is one thing I really likedabout the Hendrix family the book revealed; their free and easyinteractions with non-blacks. No wonder Jimi's music and message wasuniversal. In a time when blacks and whites seem to be once againwithdrawing into their own groups I found the Hendrix family to be veryrefreshing. Being black myself I totally reject the pressures broughtagainst me to participate only in things stamped with the "black"seal of approval. And I'd like to salute Al Hendrix for being a real fatherand taking care of his family, even children he didn't sire. A lot of mentoday wouldn't do what he did. Jimi was very fortunate to have such afather and I think he knew it. Thank you Mr. Hendrix for sharing your lifeand that of your son with us on a more intimate level. I for one willalways love Jimi and hold a fondness for him in my heart. And now for youas well.

Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced Review

(More customer reviews)This book from the Hendrix family company, "Experience Hendrix," and distributed by sheet music specialist Hal Leonard, contains signature notation for the treble and bass clefs, and, most importantly, tablature notation for the bass clef.Signature notation uses the standard notes and symbols one see on most written music.The advantage is that it conveys rhythm as well as notes; the disadvantage is that it takes a while to learn, especially on fairly complex songs.Tablature (or "Tab"), on the other hand, explicitly shows you what frets to play on each string to get the desired notes-but it tells you little or nothing about rhythm and loses some other nuances of signature.

My own opinion is that tablature is a great invention for those who don't want to wait until they learn to read signature before they play the songs they really love.Furthermore, you can get a technical description of the rhythm from the bass signature notation written right above the bass tab notation.I was playing notes from "The Wind Cries Mary" very soon after reading the tab.

There are some problems, however, because tab simply can't convey as much as signature. I suspect also that those who have studied the more traditional signature notation are musicians more likely to have received music lessons and other more formal and more intense personal instruction.A simple tab book is not a substitute for these.

Still, this is a great addition to more formal aspects of learning an instrument.I'll play scales for an hour, and then try my hand at the bass lines of some of my favorite Hendrix songs.It helps if you know the music already, or have a CD nearby (a CD is NOT included with the book).Also, the book would be much better if it included more than one page on how to read tab!Several pages with additional tab conventions and simple examples are needed here.On an absolute scale, this book deserves a 4; however, because of the paucity of tab books for bass guitar, and because this contains such sublime, historic music, the book merits a 5. As you might imagine, the beginning bassist will have more luck with the slower songs, those that are more familiar, and those with bass lines that can be matched with the lyrics-it's more difficult to keep track of your bass line when you're playing underneath a Hendrix solo. Highly recommended as a supplementary book, especially for the beginning player.

(More customer reviews)Get this folio if you want accurate transcriptions of Hendrix' unique 1967 work, containing an interesting array of his better known songs, covers, and blues.

A glaring ommission here is 'Driving South', performed thrice on the album, with one scintillating version (disc 1/track 17) being contained in Hal Leonard's 'Radio One' folio. Also missing over the 'Radio One' folio are the songs 'Love or Confusion', 'Purple Haze', 'Fire', 'Foxey Lady', and 'Stone Free'.

Rather, this folio contains numerous songs not in the 'Radio One' folio such as - 'I Was Made to Love Her', 'Sunshine of Your Love', 'A Brand New Sound', 'Can I Please Crawl Out Your Window', and 'Jammin'.

Added, the 'Radio One' album was Rycodisc's abridged edition of Hendix' BBC work, although discontinued, is readily available on the secondary market.

Overall, this folio is quite good, appealing particularly to those wanting to discover Jimi's live 'bare bones' approach, over learning about his multi-tracked and studio manipulated performances.

And get the folio for 'Radio One', too!

(More customer reviews)this is a truly amazing representation of the works of jimi hendrix. i played the tabs right along with the music and it matches perfectly for the most part. of course there are always a few discrepencies, but no one canor ever will be able to match what the rock 'n roll gypsy himself did,especially not on paper. i would recommend anyone who is interested inlearning to play like hendrix to try this book out. with the tablature itmakes it easy for players at almost any level, from novice to advanced, tolearn how to play jimi hendrix's greatest works

Rock Icons - Guitar Gods (1991) Review

(More customer reviews)It is important for anyone who would purchase this DVD to understand what they're getting and what they are not. It is NOT state of the art, it is NOT the finest performances of the artists involved, and it is certainly not the 'guitar fest' you might think. You could find many other DVD's showcasing much more impressive guitar performances. Having said all that.. I LOVE this DVD. It's like a musical chocolate box, you don't know what you're going to get with each morsel.
Strangely the best performances are by some of the most unlikely bands; the biggest stars mostly come up lacking. Hendrix, Beck, Clapton and Santana are all a bit disappointing. Hendrix looks half asleep as he plods through Hey Joe, and Santana is almost invisible. Clapton's performance is culled from a song with Delaney and Bonnie where his contribution is not the focal point of the music, its a nice song, but it's not the showcase of Eric Clapton that the guitar fan might be craving. And Jeff Beck is Jeff Beck... undeniably brilliant but somehow missing the mark with a performance almost totally devoid of emotion. But I'd rather see second rate Hendrix,Santana,Clapton and Beck than almost anything being put out by todays 'stars'.
It's the lesser lights who steal this show. Joe Walsh and the James Gang are great, as is Johnny Winter and Leslie West with Mountain. Ten Years After are incredible, although the video quality is pretty poor. The Grateful Dead (never a favourite of mine) are damn good and Duane Eddy rocks the house down. Who would have guessed? There is a vintage clip of the Who bashing their way through Happy Jack, complete with teens dancing in the foreground in what looks like some teeny bopper TV show from the 60's. Musically it's not of any real substance, but as a nostalgia piece it's a treat just to see them at that stage in their career (I don't think Keith had started shaving yet)
Please note as well, all performances are live, there is no lip synch crap on this DVD. This is real music, warts and all. The audio/video quality is sub-standard by today's standards, but this is the REAL DEAL. Previously unseen live footage of monster talents. Its like finding buried treasure for the real rock fan.
I love it.
One minor gripe: The Mountain song also appears on the "Hard Rocking" collection in the Rock Icons Series.

(More customer reviews)I was disappointed with this book.What is notated is the singing parts.You get to the lead section and it says "lead guitar" then all you get is the blank bars and the chords you'd be playing over. The chords aren't even notated (clef or tab)Now you get the words and the chord names, but not how the chord is fingered, which was one of the great things about Hendrix, because he used many unorthodox fingerings.
I wouldn't recommend this book for the guitar playing trying to get into Jimi's technique.
