The Eagles / Hell Freezes Over Review

The Eagles / Hell Freezes Over [Paperback]

Hell Freezes Over has to be the most realistic concert sound yet available on DVD.I have the DTS encoded six-speaker surround system with a 55" Widescreen HDTV, so the video is better than what I can see or hear at justabout any motion picture theatre.I have found no other DVD that can matchthe production quality and sound, yet.Mostly due to the DTS encodingwhich is noticably superior to the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround on the hometheater system.Above technical quality, the Eagles themselves performtheir best yet.Comparing Hotel California on this DVD with their originalis like comparing an old Chevy with a Rolls. The old Chevy is a greatclassic, and attractive, but the Rolls has the ride and the class.DonFelder and Joe Walsh perform better than I have ever before heard them, andplaying the Alverez classical guitars on the Hotel California cut ishands-down, just the best version ever.Glenn Frey and Don Henley giveimpressive performances, and Timothy B. Schmidt also is at his best ever onbass and vocals.I watch it again and again. There is just no comparisonto the sound of the DTS DVD and the CD of this same album.I have both andthe CD is always a letdown after hearing the DVD.Well worth the price, and a DVD you will listen to again and again.

Best of Creedence Clearwater Revival (Piano / Vocal / Chords) Review

Best of Creedence Clearwater Revival [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

I love this book!I have been a fan of CCR for a long time, and trying to play Fogerty's guitar parts just from internet tabs and/or by ear, is extremely difficult. The Guitar Recorded Versions tab book is easy to read, has the all of the lyrics and multiple guitar parts all together. There are chord diagrams at the beginning of every song as well.I have been playing for maybe a year now, and this is my favorite tab book because of the readability, quality of print, layout of the information...and of course, it's Creedence.

For the money, it's hard to beat any of the Guitar Recorded Versions tab books from Hal Leonard, and the Best of CCR is no different.Highly recommended!

Classic Rock Guitar: Jam With Songbook (The Ultimate Beginner Series) Review

Classic Rock Guitar: Jam With Songbook [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've bought lots of beginner books for learning rock and blues guitar technique, but this book is great for learning to play real songs quickly without having to understand a lot of theory or being a master of scales. The standards covered in the book and CD are simplified versions - slowed down - of Hotel California, Europa (Santana), Tush, Riders on the Storm and Proud Mary. Once you pick through the tab a few times, you can start playing along with the CD fairly quickly. I'd still recommend that you invest in a utility that let's you slow down the tracks even more to be able to hear the different notes, like Transcribe!

For guitarists who like the 'recorded versions' arrangements, this one is not for you.I was quite disappointed.I knew it was not the not for not tablature but I thought the arrangements would at least be in the recorded keys instead of transposed for easy piano keys.I expected better.

Hot Burritos: The True Story of The Flying Burrito Brothers Review

Hot Burritos: The True Story of The Flying Burrito Brothers [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first become a fan of the Flying Burrito Brothers in 1972. Prior to that, like most rock music listeners, I wouldn't have been caught dead with a Merle Haggard or bluegrass record. But Chris Hillman, Gram Parsons, and company opened up my mind to the beauty and joy of country music.

I've witnessed the gradual elevation of former-Burrito, Gram Parsons, to immortal status over the last thirty-five years. In `Hot Burritos,' John Einarson with FBB co-founder, Chris Hillman, debunk the Parsons legend with a hard-hitting history of the pioneering country-rock band that puts the contribution of each member in proper perspective.

Is Chris Hillman's criticism of Parsons motivated by jealousy? Parsons's flamboyant personality and self-inflicted early demise gave birth to a legend that continues to grow with each passing year while Hillman's unparalleled contributions to country-rock go largely unrecognized in comparison. There's no doubt that Gram Parsons had flashes of brilliance throughout his short career with the International Submarine Band, the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and as a solo artist. Yet, he never had the discipline to realize the full extent of the gifts he was given. I agree with Hillman in that, although I tried and tried, I found nothing in Parsons's two solo albums to compare with his `Gilded Palace of Sin' songs except for `She.'

To serious Burrito fans, the slights to Hillman and the rest of the band members in the race to exploit the Parsons legend are glaring:

- Several books have been written about Parsons, but none about the Flying Burrito Brothers until now.

- The A&M 1976 release of "Sleepless Nights" is billed as Gram Parsons - The Flying Burrito Brothers with Gram solo on the cover.

- The A&M 1988 release of "The Best of the Flying Burrito Brothers: Farther Along" includes not one song from the post-Parsons Burritos. The 'blue' album and the live "Last of the Red Hot Burritos" had a lot of great stuff, most of it better than the songs from `Burrito Deluxe.'

- The A&M 2001 "20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Flying Burrito Brothers" includes no songs from the post-Parsons Burritos.

The Amoeba Record's 2007 "Gram Parsons With The Flying Burrito Brothers: Live At The Avalon Ballroom, 1969" gives Parsons headline billing and features a solo Gram on the cover.

`Hot Burritos' does much more than just put Parsons's contributions in their rightful perspective. The origins of the band and its ultimate ending are dealt with nicely. Each of the four albums is critiqued and there's a wealth of interesting information coming from first-hand interviews with former Burritos and associates. Similar to his other books I've bought, "Desperados: The Roots Of Country Rock," "Mr. Tambourine Man: The Life and Legacy of the Byrds' Gene Clark," and "There's Something Happening Here: The Story Of Buffalo Springfield," Einarson uses a plethora of primary sources to give a factual account of the Burritos. Chris Hillman gives the reader information about the band that simply could not be found elsewhere.

Sadly, the Flying Burrito Brothers never found their niche while the band existed. However, to their everlasting credit, they've been turning on countless people to the beauty of country music through their recordings for the last forty years. Thanks for the music, Chris, from the Byrds, Burritos, Manassas, Souther, Hillman, and Furay, Desert Rose Band, and the solo albums. Thanks especially for turning me on to bluegrass. And thanks for the great Gospel tunes in your later albums.

Product Description:
Widely regarded as the original country-rock band, The Flying Burrito Brothers were determined to pull rock music back from the psychedelic abyss and return it to its pure and simple roots. To say that they succeeded would be an understatement. In a brief four-year span, the original troupe became one of the most influential rock groups of all time, reaching everyone from the Eagles and Jackson Browne to Uncle Tupelo and Alan Jackson. Hot Burritos is the colorful, hard-hitting, insightful, and deeply personal account of this maverick band, as told by founder Chris Hillman and other group members and associates. It shatters common myths about the group, taking readers for the first time inside the Parsons-Hillman partnership, their notoriously extravagant 1969 train trip tour, the doomed Altamont Festival, the Rolling Stones' inner circle, the discovery of Emmylou Harris, Parsons' overindulgence and ultimate dismissal, and the legacy the group, and the enigmatic Parsons, left behind.

Rock Icons - Guitar Gods (1991) Review

Rock Icons - Guitar Gods
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It is important for anyone who would purchase this DVD to understand what they're getting and what they are not. It is NOT state of the art, it is NOT the finest performances of the artists involved, and it is certainly not the 'guitar fest' you might think. You could find many other DVD's showcasing much more impressive guitar performances. Having said all that.. I LOVE this DVD. It's like a musical chocolate box, you don't know what you're going to get with each morsel.
Strangely the best performances are by some of the most unlikely bands; the biggest stars mostly come up lacking. Hendrix, Beck, Clapton and Santana are all a bit disappointing. Hendrix looks half asleep as he plods through Hey Joe, and Santana is almost invisible. Clapton's performance is culled from a song with Delaney and Bonnie where his contribution is not the focal point of the music, its a nice song, but it's not the showcase of Eric Clapton that the guitar fan might be craving. And Jeff Beck is Jeff Beck... undeniably brilliant but somehow missing the mark with a performance almost totally devoid of emotion. But I'd rather see second rate Hendrix,Santana,Clapton and Beck than almost anything being put out by todays 'stars'.
It's the lesser lights who steal this show. Joe Walsh and the James Gang are great, as is Johnny Winter and Leslie West with Mountain. Ten Years After are incredible, although the video quality is pretty poor. The Grateful Dead (never a favourite of mine) are damn good and Duane Eddy rocks the house down. Who would have guessed? There is a vintage clip of the Who bashing their way through Happy Jack, complete with teens dancing in the foreground in what looks like some teeny bopper TV show from the 60's. Musically it's not of any real substance, but as a nostalgia piece it's a treat just to see them at that stage in their career (I don't think Keith had started shaving yet)
Please note as well, all performances are live, there is no lip synch crap on this DVD. This is real music, warts and all. The audio/video quality is sub-standard by today's standards, but this is the REAL DEAL. Previously unseen live footage of monster talents. Its like finding buried treasure for the real rock fan.
I love it.
One minor gripe: The Mountain song also appears on the "Hard Rocking" collection in the Rock Icons Series.

Creedence Clearwater Revival Complete (Sheet music) Review

Creedence Clearwater Revival Complete [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This music book serves its purpose on a very BASIC level. The chord progressions for most Creedence songs are pretty simple. Therefore, it is hard not to get it right even by accident.Several of the songs are written in the wrong key but a good musician should be able to transpose. Most of the instrumental passages are missing(Gloomy, Suzie Q, Walk On The Water,Ramble Tamble, I Heard It Through The Grapevine).Long As I Can See The Light seems to be a little off with the piano notes. Most of the other piano music is pretty on the money.Cotton Fields is butchered on many levels. The guys only sing the first verse. If there is a book with tabilature out there and guitar solos written out, I would pass on this edition. However, beginners can certainly use this as it is kept very simple.

The New Eagles Complete Review

The New Eagles Complete [Paperback]

Whether you are a fan, or just interested in the music of the Eagles, this is the book you need! More than 65 of their greatest and well known songs (including some rarer live performances) are laid out in sheet music form, showing chords, shapes, tempo and full lyrics. Very easy to follow and play, and not encumbered with pages of non relevant information, this is a pure musicians aid, rather than anything else. Alphabetical contents page helps you jump straight to selected favorites, and although some songs run over 6 pages in sheet form, which can be a little distracting and disruptive when trying to follow with guitar, this is a great buy. Anyone who has ever purchased individual songs in sheet form will also enjoy the exceptional value for money of this collection.

The Music of The Eagles Made Easy for Guitar (The Music of... Made Easy for Guitar Series) Review

The Music of The Eagles Made Easy for Guitar [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a collection of the Eagles' early hits, all made easy for beginner guitarists. It includes:
--Already Gone
--The Best of My Love
--Desperado
--Doolin'-Dalton
--Heartache Tonight
--Hollywood Waltz
--Hotel California
--James Dean
--Lyin' Eyes
--One of These Nights
--Outlaw Man
--Peaceful Easy Feeling
--Saturday Night
--Take it Easy
--Take it to the Limit
--Witchy Woman
As with all books in the Made Easy Series, chords are shown in full diagram form, showing you where to put your fingers, which strings are open, and which strings aren't played.Strum marks are also included to let you know how many times to strum each chord.Only the melody line appears together with the lyrics, so you can't really play these songs on the piano- -unless you know your piano chords real well.
Some of the songs in this collection are a lot easier to play, learn, and sing than others, perhaps because their melodic structure is more linear, or whatever the musical term is.More difficult pieces include Doolin' Dalton, Hotel California, and Heartache Tonight.Beginning guitarists may not be able to play every song in this book, at least not right away, but the book puts many old favorites within their reach.
