I bought this book for my husband - a classic country music lover and a guitar "picker".He was spent hours enjoying this book.I have anjoyed listening to him develop new skills and being serenaded. If you love classic country - you should buy this one.The chords are not for the stark beginner, but are still simple enough for those that are not highly accomplished.I love that it shows as well as names the chords, so if you don't know that chord you can easily figure it out.

Fred Sokolow's description of Maybelle Carter's "scratch" style and slide guitar techniques are simply written and easy to follow. The combination of having the lyrics, standard notation and guitar tablature is fantanstic!A beginner can easily get into most of these songs, if you can get beyond re-tuning.But it would probably take a more advanced player to appreciate the nuances of her playing.I also play banjo and have used the standard notation to compose banjo solos. No matter what your level of guitar, if you love the Carter Family songs, you'll love this book!

Hot Burritos: The True Story of The Flying Burrito Brothers Review

Hot Burritos: The True Story of The Flying Burrito Brothers [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I first become a fan of the Flying Burrito Brothers in 1972. Prior to that, like most rock music listeners, I wouldn't have been caught dead with a Merle Haggard or bluegrass record. But Chris Hillman, Gram Parsons, and company opened up my mind to the beauty and joy of country music.

I've witnessed the gradual elevation of former-Burrito, Gram Parsons, to immortal status over the last thirty-five years. In `Hot Burritos,' John Einarson with FBB co-founder, Chris Hillman, debunk the Parsons legend with a hard-hitting history of the pioneering country-rock band that puts the contribution of each member in proper perspective.

Is Chris Hillman's criticism of Parsons motivated by jealousy? Parsons's flamboyant personality and self-inflicted early demise gave birth to a legend that continues to grow with each passing year while Hillman's unparalleled contributions to country-rock go largely unrecognized in comparison. There's no doubt that Gram Parsons had flashes of brilliance throughout his short career with the International Submarine Band, the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, and as a solo artist. Yet, he never had the discipline to realize the full extent of the gifts he was given. I agree with Hillman in that, although I tried and tried, I found nothing in Parsons's two solo albums to compare with his `Gilded Palace of Sin' songs except for `She.'

To serious Burrito fans, the slights to Hillman and the rest of the band members in the race to exploit the Parsons legend are glaring:

- Several books have been written about Parsons, but none about the Flying Burrito Brothers until now.

- The A&M 1976 release of "Sleepless Nights" is billed as Gram Parsons - The Flying Burrito Brothers with Gram solo on the cover.

- The A&M 1988 release of "The Best of the Flying Burrito Brothers: Farther Along" includes not one song from the post-Parsons Burritos. The 'blue' album and the live "Last of the Red Hot Burritos" had a lot of great stuff, most of it better than the songs from `Burrito Deluxe.'

- The A&M 2001 "20th Century Masters - The Millennium Collection: The Best of the Flying Burrito Brothers" includes no songs from the post-Parsons Burritos.

The Amoeba Record's 2007 "Gram Parsons With The Flying Burrito Brothers: Live At The Avalon Ballroom, 1969" gives Parsons headline billing and features a solo Gram on the cover.

`Hot Burritos' does much more than just put Parsons's contributions in their rightful perspective. The origins of the band and its ultimate ending are dealt with nicely. Each of the four albums is critiqued and there's a wealth of interesting information coming from first-hand interviews with former Burritos and associates. Similar to his other books I've bought, "Desperados: The Roots Of Country Rock," "Mr. Tambourine Man: The Life and Legacy of the Byrds' Gene Clark," and "There's Something Happening Here: The Story Of Buffalo Springfield," Einarson uses a plethora of primary sources to give a factual account of the Burritos. Chris Hillman gives the reader information about the band that simply could not be found elsewhere.

Sadly, the Flying Burrito Brothers never found their niche while the band existed. However, to their everlasting credit, they've been turning on countless people to the beauty of country music through their recordings for the last forty years. Thanks for the music, Chris, from the Byrds, Burritos, Manassas, Souther, Hillman, and Furay, Desert Rose Band, and the solo albums. Thanks especially for turning me on to bluegrass. And thanks for the great Gospel tunes in your later albums.

Product Description:
Widely regarded as the original country-rock band, The Flying Burrito Brothers were determined to pull rock music back from the psychedelic abyss and return it to its pure and simple roots. To say that they succeeded would be an understatement. In a brief four-year span, the original troupe became one of the most influential rock groups of all time, reaching everyone from the Eagles and Jackson Browne to Uncle Tupelo and Alan Jackson. Hot Burritos is the colorful, hard-hitting, insightful, and deeply personal account of this maverick band, as told by founder Chris Hillman and other group members and associates. It shatters common myths about the group, taking readers for the first time inside the Parsons-Hillman partnership, their notoriously extravagant 1969 train trip tour, the doomed Altamont Festival, the Rolling Stones' inner circle, the discovery of Emmylou Harris, Parsons' overindulgence and ultimate dismissal, and the legacy the group, and the enigmatic Parsons, left behind.

Johnny Cash - American V: A Hundred Highways (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook) Review

Johnny Cash - American V: A Hundred Highways [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"American V: A Hundred Highways" has become one of my favorite Cash albums, and so I was very glad to see that Hal-Leonard came out with a corresponding songbook. As an intermediate pianist, I found most songs simple enough to play through with minimal practice.

"On the Evening Train," "Love's Been Good to Me," "Rose of My Heart," and "I'm Free from the Chain Gang Now" have the most piano-friendly arrangements. These four were some of the easiest to learn, but they are not oversimplified.

"Help Me" is one of those songs that I wish were transcribed as accompaniment, without the melody incorporated throughout the treble clef. With use of the chord guides, though, I got around that.

I thought for sure "God's Gonna Cut You Down" without the foot-stomping and handclapping would sound weak on the piano.I'm glad to say I was wrong.Without the percussion and electric guitar, the tone is actually darker.

Cash's songwriting tends to be very simple (which is part of his charm) and "Like the 309" is no exception. It is still a lot of fun to play, though, and there is plenty of room to add your own touches.

The reason for my 4-out-of-5 rating is the same as why I would give the album 4 out of 5: "I Came to Believe" and "Four Strong Winds," which in my opinion are weak songs in comparison to the rest. That being said, though, most Cash fans and fans of classic folk/country music will appreciate the music here.

This book is very good.My sister plays the guitar and I play the piano, so we play the songs together and we both sing. It's nice because the Book gives you a seperate line with the actual notes and words of the song. Some of the piano parts of the songs are slightly difficult. One has 4 flats in the key signiture, but most have none-2. =)

So Long So Wrong: Guitar/Banjo/Vocal Review

So Long So Wrong: Guitar/Banjo/Vocal [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I think the book is good as a reference tool for some of the notes played. However, let's take the song "Happiness" for example. There are actually 2 guitars playing in the record, one in the center channel and one panned to the right channel. Although the TAB combines the best of the two, it's actually notating the harder way of playing either. The main guitar in the song was the right channel and that guitar had a capo on the 2nd fret to allow some of the notes to be played open. The filler guitar was played normal without a capo, but the book transcribes how to play everything without a capo which makes what would've been open strings harder, if not impossible to play along with the record. Like I said, a good reference, but not a bible. There are other more accurate TAB books on the market. Hope to see one for their "Forget About It" album, though. That would be nice.

How Nashville Became Music City, U.S.A.: 50 Years of Music Row [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

This book is different than others when writing about country music in general and Nashville especially. I does not dwelve into on more or less interesting stories about the stars and the people, how they live, about their drinking problems etc. But it tells the story about the tunesmiths and producers and of cource of the stars from a new angle. How did this and that song come into existence, how producers became excellent producers sometimes by inconcidents. sometimes from working their way from the bottom to the top, and how stars struggled before they became stars. How the network mattered. that is who knows who in the business, which is a key to succseed in Music City USA. And how some key persons, in the different stages of the development of country music were resposnible to get the country wagon back on track when times got bad.Bur most of all I will empathize the autor`s ability to focus on the less known people who contributeted much more to find new artists and songs and publishers, or who run small labels and publishing companies, than they have been credited for. All in all, a must read for all serious fans of country music.

Product Description:
How did a medium-sized Southern river town become arguably the most important music center in America? In How Nashville Became Music City, U.S.A., we learn how a single studio in a tiny duplex house became Music Row, a ten-block area populated by hundreds of talented people whose job is to simply make music. The book features stories from publishers, songwriters and others who help tell the evolution of this fabled center of music. It's where Elvis ushered in the commercial rock 'n' roll explosion by recording "Heartbreak Hotel," Patsy Cline, Jim Reeves, and Willie Nelson taught mainstream America to love soulful ballads, and Bob Dylan recorded three of his most important albums. The full-length CD includes 12 recordings made in the early studios of Music Row, giving listeners a rare chance to hear the demos made by some of Nashville's most talented artists. Songs include "Bye, Bye, Love," "Crazy," "King of the Road," "Walkin' After Midnight" and "He Stopped Loving Her Today."
