Jack Bruce and Robin Trower: Seven Moons Live Review

Jack Bruce and Robin Trower: Seven Moons Live
Average Reviews:

Like many, I thought that Robin Trower got back together with Jack Bruce in order to produce a cheap payday capitalizing on past glories. After all, even the song titles were rip-offs of old stuff, right?

Well, I was wrong.Instead of a jaded, pale imitation of what used to be, like most rockers past their prime produce, this is actually a heartening reminder that talent and true greatness stand the test of time.I will readily agree that Trower and Bruce are not going to win any beauty contests these days; it's actually kind of heartbreaking to see how they've aged.

But, DESPITE the ravages of time, Bruce can still produce jewels like "Just Another Day", which is just as good as anything on his masterwork, "Harmony Row".And Robin Trower plays ridiculously well for a sixty-four year old. He plays the Cream classic songs effortlessly, but he really shines on the new stuff like "Seven Moons", "So Far to Yesterday", and "The Last Door".

In the final analysis, there aren't that many rock musicians that you can classify as "significantly creative artists".But these are two such musicians, from a generation that lifted rock music toward respectability.

Look at the people Bruce has worked with: John McLaughlin, Tony Williams, Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, Chris Spedding, Gary Moore, Carla Bley, Frank Zappa.Jack has the kind of musical intelligence that transcends genres.Trower has the flowing style of soloing that can remind you of a jazz saxophonist, and he is never anything less than tasteful.

So my advice is to get past the wrinkles, and enjoy the music.Jazz player Roland Kirk kept playing after debilitating strokes.Johnny Cash still commanded respect when he was frail of health.

Just be glad that these guys are still around, still creative, still sharing their gifts. What they're doing, in the face of a music industry that only loves pretty faces, is nothing short of HEROIC.

I enjoyed the CD, and a little over a year ago I started learning to play the piano as an adult.I was a little apprehensive that this book would be over my head, but my piano teacher has already incorporated some of these songs into my "curriculum".The arrangements are a bit challenging for someone at my level of skill, but what saves me is that the tempo of these enchanting songs are slow enough that I can keep up.I am quite happy with this book.

Enya - Paint the Sky with Stars [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

Although Enya's music is superb, the transcriptions in this book leave something to be desired.Part of the trouble is of course due to the difficulty of arranging music originally for multiple instruments and voices for solo piano, but on other instances it seems to be more thoughtlessness on the parts of those who transcribed the music. For example:

-Several of the pieces, such that "Anywhere is" and "The Memory of Trees" are very repetitive. In the original pieces, the harmonies and background change over the course of the song.In these arrangements, each verse is notated exactly the same.

-In "The Celts", a D.S. al. Coda is given without any indication as to what point in the music the player is supposed to skip to the Coda

-In "Storms in Africa", there are sections where the pianist is asked to play three notes simultaneously, each of which is at least an octave and a fifth apart from the others.

Having just read this so called biography, I am amazed at some of the comments from readers and reviewers alike. "Well researched"?"Well documented"? "Balanced"? Thebook is full of errors! There are blatant mistakes and distortions onvirtually every page!E.G.Page 15: Filignano is in the Molise region notAbruzzi. Page 37: The RCA contract was signed in February 1945 not October1944. Page 47: The apartment was not rent free. Lanza paid $75 per monthfor it.Page 219: Lanza and Di Stefano never met. I know Di Stefano. Theyonly spoke twice on the telephone.Need I go on? I have spent a lifetimeresearching the life and career of Lanza (the last 20 years working on abiography.)I cannot believe that Amadeus actually published this almostcompletely inaccurate book. As for Mr. Bessette, I don't know his motivesfor attempting this futile exercise, but the mere fact that he relied on AlTeitelbaum as his main source of information says it all.

I didnt shop carefully. I thought this was a Prince coffee table photo book like the last few I bought. Bought this, and 3121 for the wife for Christmas. Unfortunately She doesnt play an instrument, and I play guitar. Thankfully this wasnt the only gift I gave her because when we saw it was ONLY sheet music, I looked like Fred Flintstone giving Wilma a BOWLING BALL for a gift when she doesnt bowl and he does... all the time.

The publisher really SHOULD post up some pics of the inside contents so the buyer can understand what they are paying for.

A disappointment.

Manhattan Music CD Canadian Brass & Eastman Wind Ensemble Review

Manhattan Music CD Canadian Brass & Eastman Wind Ensemble
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Canadian Brass are always looking to rewrite the playbook when it comes to recording projects. In their storied career they helped define not only brass performance but are literally responsible for bringing certain genres of music to light for many audiences, as well as performers - baroque, renaissance, ragtime and jazz have all been explored by the Canadian Brass as they seek new arrangements and new works & commissions. This brings us to Manhattan Music - an album featuring the Canadian Brass along with the Eastman Wind Ensemble - a collaboration that works well and hopefully will continue. The title tells it all, here are four new and original works and arrangements about or inspired by Gotham. The centerpiece is the title track - Manhattan Music - by Bramwell Tovey, a transplanted Londoner (and tuba player!) now residing in Canada, that brings the dashing and dapper sounds of a cool New York to life in a series of theme and variations. New York Cityscape by Jeff Tydzik feels the Big Apple's multi-culturalism with dance movements including rags, tangos and tarantellas. Bernstein of course is synonymous with the city and the arrangement of Suite from Mass is offered. Here is a new and different take from the Canadian Brass paying homage to the center of the universe - New York City.Recommended listening.

Counting Crows - August and Everything After (Guitar Recorded Versions) Review

Counting Crows - August and Everything After [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book with high expectations. I'd never bought any Counting Crows sheet music before and I was pretty excited about it. I have delt with Hal Leonard before and haven't really had a problem with them. Everything seemed right in place, but there were two annoyances that stuck out to me.
The first is that the songs in the book do not follow the order of the CD, making it difficult to flip through the book when the tracks change, unless you want to program your CD player to follow the order in the book. This can be a big or moderate flaw, depening on how you want to look at it.
The other problem I encountered was when I was trying to play "A Murder of One". Now, I know my guitar and piano skills aren't great, but I was sure that I wasn't THIS bad. After I listened to the recording and followed along in the music, I realized that while the song is in the key of F#, it is written musically in the book as the key of F. That's fine to do, since F is a lot easier than F#, but they could at least include a note that says "Music transcribed from F# to F to make playing less difficult". They've done this for other artist's music (such as Sarah McLochlan) to make playing easier, especially when they're in wierd and generally unfamiliar keys (F#, Ab, C#, etc.). For those of you who are musicians, you'll understand this.
There's a limit as to how great a book of sheet music can be, but those few things are what keep it from getting 5/5. Regardless, still worth the buy.

Somewhere on the Internet, an authority has written that "The Lucy Show Theme" is in this book-- It's not.The "I Love Lucy Theme" IS contained in this work.I bought the book for this one song, and even though it's not here, there were so many other fun themes that I was happy to keep it.I'm not an expert musician, and it seems to me there are some typos in the music.I still give the book a "thumbs up" and I feel it was well worth the price-- just make sure you are getting the "Lucy Theme" you want.;-)

Jars of Clay: Piano/Vocal/Chords Review

Jars of Clay: Piano/Vocal/Chords [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this CD! It's the first Jars of Clay album, and the best(in my opinion). It helped me to grow spiritually. In case you don't know, these are the songs with a short description of each:
1. Liquid: talks (sings, actually) about Christ's sacrifice for us, and how "He didn't die for nothing." I liked all the instruments in the background, too.
2. Sinking: about how we can try to convince ourselves that we don't need God; that we're fine on our own. But then it goes into how God sees through our lies and we should turn to Him for healing.
3. Love Song For a Savior: my favorite! The title is pretty self-explanatory, I think. It's a beautiful song about coming closer to God; and how much He loves us.
4. Like a Child: another favorite! This one's about how if we have faith like a child, we can move mountains!
5. Art in Me: external looks and/or occupations shouldn't be judged, according to this song. It talks about how Christ sees "the art" in all of us, and wants us to do the same to others.
6. He: this song was kind of sad. It talks about a guy who is hurting because of the rotten things he's done, and wants to hide from God. Also, his parents are abusive and non-supportive, and wants to hide from them. But God holds His children, even this guy, in His hands.
7. Boy on a String: about being ourselves and becoming the man/woman that God wants us to be; not just going along with the crowd and being like a puppet, doing what others want you to.
8. Flood: talks of a great "flood" and how we can't swim all forty days without Christ. He lifts us when we fall, and saves us from "drowning" in our confusion; He'll hold us when we need it.
9. Worlds Apart: about how what we think we need and what we believe are "worlds apart."
10. Blind: talks about how our cynical, doubting selves blind us from God and His redemption; saying "blind words you call; blind words will fall."
