(More customer reviews)First written some years ago, this book has long been out of print. Now Hal Leonard has finally issued a new revised and expanded edition. It contains all the information from the original book plus updating the information on the members of the band. This includes an obituary of Rick Danko and a brand-new interview with Robbie Robertson.

With the years that Mr. Hoskyns has put into this book, it is likely to remain the definitive book on 'The Band' and on the early years of rock. The Band pioneered not only music, but many other things. Here were a group of young men that were suddenly thrust into the spotlight. Here was a band that put out two of the most significant albums of our time, and then fell apart.

This book chronicles the interplay between the members of the band that led to their breaking up, it talks about the suicide of Richard Manuel, and of course the life that Rick Danko lived with drugs and pain killers until his fatal heart attack.

This is one of those books that is literally a labor of love by a professional writer of course, but also by a devoted fan.

(More customer reviews)Fred Sokolow's description of Maybelle Carter's "scratch" style and slide guitar techniques are simply written and easy to follow.The combination of having the lyrics, standard notation and guitar tablature is fantanstic!A beginner can easily get into most of these songs, if you can get beyond re-tuning.But it would probably take a more advanced player to appreciate the nuances of her playing.I also play banjo and have used the standard notation to compose banjo solos.No matter what your level of guitar, if you love the Carter Family songs, you'll love this book!

In their storied career they helped define not only brass performance but are literally responsible for bringing certain genres of music to light for many audiences, as well as performers - baroque, renaissance, ragtime and jazz have all been explored by the Canadian Brass as they seek new arrangements and new works & commissions. This brings us to Manhattan Music - an album featuring the Canadian Brass along with the Eastman Wind Ensemble - a collaboration that works well and hopefully will continue. The title tells it all, here are four new and original works and arrangements about or inspired by Gotham. The centerpiece is the title track - Manhattan Music - by Bramwell Tovey, a transplanted Londoner (and tuba player!) now residing in Canada, that brings the dashing and dapper sounds of a cool New York to life in a series of theme and variations. New York Cityscape by Jeff Tydzik feels the Big Apple's multi-culturalism with dance movements including rags, tangos and tarantellas. Bernstein of course is synonymous with the city and the arrangement of Suite from Mass is offered.
