In their storied career they helped define not only brass performance but are literally responsible for bringing certain genres of music to light for many audiences, as well as performers - baroque, renaissance, ragtime and jazz have all been explored by the Canadian Brass as they seek new arrangements and new works & commissions. This brings us to Manhattan Music - an album featuring the Canadian Brass along with the Eastman Wind Ensemble - a collaboration that works well and hopefully will continue. The title tells it all, here are four new and original works and arrangements about or inspired by Gotham. The centerpiece is the title track - Manhattan Music - by Bramwell Tovey, a transplanted Londoner (and tuba player!) now residing in Canada, that brings the dashing and dapper sounds of a cool New York to life in a series of theme and variations. New York Cityscape by Jeff Tydzik feels the Big Apple's multi-culturalism with dance movements including rags, tangos and tarantellas. Bernstein of course is synonymous with the city and the arrangement of Suite from Mass is offered. Here is a new and different take from the Canadian Brass paying homage to the center of the universe - New York City.Recommended listening.
