(More customer reviews)KING JOHN has one of Shakespeare's best death scenes and a character, Faulconbridge the bastard son of Richard the Lion Hearted, who is a first draft for Falstaff -- and better integrated into the play's main action than Falstaff is. It's unique among Shakespeare's works in being about Realpolitik in a genuine historical context -- as if a modern American playwright should write a play about George Washington's political compromises, complete with a presentation of the real historical situations that led up to them. Faulconbridge is there to make cynical comments, and yet remain loyal to King John, who almost, but not quite, becomes a child murderer in the course of the action. Earlier, the complexities of wartime politics are revealed when a town refuses to admit either the King of England or the King of France as its rightful ruler until the two kings have fought out the question first -- whereupon the two kings decide to agree on a truce, just long enough to wipe the town out together, then go back to fighting one another. The play is a wonderful mix of history and ironic commentary, one of two plays of Shakespeare's that is entirely in verse (the other one is RICHARD II, which he wrote just before KING JOHN), and it's tragically poetic and satiric in equal measure. Shakespeare never wrote anything else quite like it. If he wrote better plays, they were also different kinds of plays: this one is unique. The Folger edition has excellent notes for beginning students; the Oxford edition is for more advanced students, and also exceptionally good.

(More customer reviews)Many people would like to say that Shakespeare did not write this play. But this is hardly fair. Even with the world's finest writers such as Marlowe and Dickens, not every single thing they write can be a masterpiece. But what makes "The Two Gentleman of Verona" worthreading? Well,Shakespeare presents us with a valid theme. (Conflictsoften exist between romance and friendship.) There is also beautifullanguage. Launce and his dog offer some interesting comedy as well as abeautiful and memorable passage in 2.3. The scene where Valentine isaccepted amonst the outlaws is memorable. This is Shakespeare's first playwhere a woman (Julia) disuises herself as man to do some investigating. Itis also easy to see that several elements of this play were used in"Romeo and Juliet." To be sure, this is not a masterpiece like"The Comedy of Errors," "Richard III," or "KingLear." But it is still an good study that is worth some interest.

The Lord of the Rings for Easy Piano Review

(More customer reviews)"Easy" is a hard word.I'm just coming back to the keyboard after 30+ years away and I can't say what level of player I was when I left (past Fur Elise; stalled on the Moonlight Sonata).Have been buying a host of popular music for "easy" piano and it varies.Some is so simplified I have it down on the third time through; others send me to the flash cards to learn what those off-staff notes are.LOTR is right in the middle of the range.

--A few songs from each of the three movies.In Dreams and Concerning Hobbits are the ones I'm learning first; will go back to the DVD and listen differently to decide which of the remaining songs I liked enough to want to learn.

--For the most part, no more than four notes in play at any one time, and a lot places where the music is one note, each hand. A smattering of 16th notes but mostly quarters, some eighths, and half notes.

--Easy key signatures; mostly C and the rest two sharps or two flats max.

--Lots and lots of 12-note arpeggios without a lot of fingering assistance in the left hand.

--Notes range two octaves above and below middle C.

In sum?There are enough notes on each page that the song sounds good, yet easy enough to recognize the tune on the first or second time through.Plan:master this book, then buy the individual movie scores one at a time as I get better and want a richer sound.
