(More customer reviews)If you want some extra insight into how these songs are played, these books are always great. But I'm always shocked when these things have so many minor errors. Most notably in this book, the guitar chords for the verse of "I'll Stick Around" are the incorrect form, which is disappointing because the actual chords sound really cool when played correctly. Personally, I see a mistake like that and lose faith in the whole thing. Maybe I'm too picky but if I pay money for a score, I want it to be exact.

Overall, the book gives you a great start when learning these parts if you're struggling figuring it out on your own. But some of the tougher details are really left up to you to figure out.

(More customer reviews)If you're like me, you'll find this book really handy. The format includes only the chords and the lyrics. I'm an experienced guitarist, so I only want the bare bones of a song. I rarely have to turn the pages since most songs fit on a couple of pages (lyrics are hard for me to remember for some reason). The chord changes are placed above the lyrics, so if you know the song, it's easy to make the changes at the right time. So far, all of the songs I've played are in the correct key, but I've only played a dozen or so from this book. The Chord Songbook series has been a real productive one for me. I love 'em. Especially the Beatles Complete Chord Songbook. I've learned more about pop song structure from these books than any other material. Chord diagrams are at the top the every song title page, in case you need them. Songs are in the correct key unless a capo is required. While I don't use these songbooks to learn new material very often, I do use them to play songs I'm familiar with. So, if you want to play songs without having to turn pages for lyrics and tabs, you will probably like these. Happy guitaring y'all.

(More customer reviews)I've seen too many guitar tab books over the years to remember and I've learned that only a handful are truly excellent in terms of accuracy, ease of reading and overall use and these tend to be the ones that remain in my music library over time.For this reason, I'm usually tolerant of minor errors that are easily glossed over and that can be figured out myself as I play along with the cd with relative ease.This particular tab book on the early works of Eric Clapton as presented in the first 2 cds of the 4 disc Crossroads box set is a mixed bag.The transcriptions are mostly accurate although I have some different views with regards the choice of finger positions for certain tracks; these issues can come down to an individual preference issue and so I'm okay with it for the most part.For example, the guitar solo as transcribed for "A Certain Girl" isn't the optimal one as I feel the one I play sounds a lot more like the cd and is also a lot easier to play than the one in the book.

There is also a probably now dated essay on Clapton's life by Anthony DeCurtis a Senior Writer for Rolling Stone Magazine as well as another essay by the transcriber, Fred Sokolow, himself on Clapton's guitar stylings which is a nice-to-have and which is rare for most guitar tab books.The book binding though isn't optimal as the pages close in on themselves easily and it's hard to read the notes that are close to the spine because of this.The biggest downer for me though is that the font size is very small making it very difficult to read and play along with the cd at the same time.This is a real shame as the transciber probably put in a lot of work on this project only for the publisher to significantly reduce the usefulness and hence quality of the work with thoughtless publishing.Obviously the publisher is no musician and so doesn't understand how to publish music books that help instead of hinder the musician.Let's just say that I'm surprised that the publisher is actually Hal Leonard.Get your magnifying glasses ready and prepare to do a lot of hard pressing and smoothing down of the pages to keep them in place risking the pages coming off the spine while you play if you want to dig into this otherwise decent attempt at transcibing the work of this great guitarist.

(More customer reviews)All the history is interesting, but that's about it. All the tabs are slightly wrong. They sound close, but not quite right. It seems to me that this book is for beginners as everything is tabbed to be easier than the real way, which is really noticable in the solos, where in some cases every other note is left out just to make it more playable. All right for beginners, but if you really want to play KISS songs, don't get this.

King handing off songs to each other, you've got twice the value of most normal blues songs.And this book puts out double the value that way.Just flip this one open to DAYS OF OLD and watch these two six-string storytellers weave the tapestry tight on this shuffle.If you'd like to "see how it's done", then pick up this book.

To me, the only thing that could make this any better would for the album to have included my two favorite guitarists - Carlos Santana and Henry Garza of Los Lonely Boys - in a four way demonstration of skill; and, of course, for this book to then have the four-way view of the action on stage!

Pick up a copy - this is a good one.

Eric Clapton - The Bluesman Review

(More customer reviews)The Bluesman is a great compilation of music from Eric Clapton assembled by Andy Aledort.Much of the music is from his earlier days so ignores more timely titles, but is an in depth look at the early blues oriented style Clapton started with.

I can't understand why Hal Leonard discontinued this package unless there may have been a plan to convert the included CD to DVD, and the plan was abandoned before implementation. As it is, the tabs are clearly written, accurate: almost painfully so: and the CD tracks are perfect. Each title is broken into segments, with each segment played at normal speed and again at a much slower tempo. This makes it easy to follow the tab, or to play note for note with the track.

In closing: The Bluesman is a terrific product for learning the blues style of one of popular music's most influential artists.I only wish Hal Leonard Corp. would produce it with an accompanying DVD so I could purchase that as well.

(More customer reviews)So I picked up this book based on what it advertised (which, I realise, is what most people do when buying a book, but bear with me here) and I was let down to an unimaginable degree. This book, "Learn to Play Like the Guitar Greats" is totally misleading. If you are expecting to actually LEARN some guitar riffs, guess again. This book is more of an abridged guide to some (and buy some, I mean only a select few) of the greatest guitarists around. Or is it? For some reason, the extremely un-talented Jack Black of the White Stripes made it into this book, yet Eddie Van Halen, Ted Nugent, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Tom Morello, Frank Zappa, Yngwie Malmstien, Randy Rhodes and Eric Johnson (to name only a few) were omitted. As for actual guitar riffs, the list grows shorter still. The book talks about some of the greatest guitar riffs written by Jimmy Page such as "The Song Remains the Same" and "Heartbreaker" as well as a look at his amazing double-neck SG, but when it comes to the guitar tab, we get a very weak selection of songs-"Kashmir" and "Stairway to Heaven"-both of which, like all the other tablature in this book, contain only the opening riffs. A better title for this book would have been "Learn About the Most Overplayed/Recognisable Guitarists and a Few Simple Riffs that They Wrote". In all seriousness (with my apologies to Amazon for discouraging the purchase of this book) I cannot stress enough what a waste of money this book is. I would have given this book a 0/5 rating, but apparently, that doesn't exist. Besides, how can you possibly take a book like this seriously if they claim the guitarist behind Black Sabbath is Tony Iommi (it's TOMMY, for those who weren't sure).

Rock Icons - Guitar Gods (1991) Review

(More customer reviews)It is important for anyone who would purchase this DVD to understand what they're getting and what they are not. It is NOT state of the art, it is NOT the finest performances of the artists involved, and it is certainly not the 'guitar fest' you might think. You could find many other DVD's showcasing much more impressive guitar performances. Having said all that.. I LOVE this DVD. It's like a musical chocolate box, you don't know what you're going to get with each morsel.
Strangely the best performances are by some of the most unlikely bands; the biggest stars mostly come up lacking. Hendrix, Beck, Clapton and Santana are all a bit disappointing. Hendrix looks half asleep as he plods through Hey Joe, and Santana is almost invisible. Clapton's performance is culled from a song with Delaney and Bonnie where his contribution is not the focal point of the music, its a nice song, but it's not the showcase of Eric Clapton that the guitar fan might be craving. And Jeff Beck is Jeff Beck... undeniably brilliant but somehow missing the mark with a performance almost totally devoid of emotion. But I'd rather see second rate Hendrix,Santana,Clapton and Beck than almost anything being put out by todays 'stars'.
It's the lesser lights who steal this show. Joe Walsh and the James Gang are great, as is Johnny Winter and Leslie West with Mountain. Ten Years After are incredible, although the video quality is pretty poor. The Grateful Dead (never a favourite of mine) are damn good and Duane Eddy rocks the house down. Who would have guessed? There is a vintage clip of the Who bashing their way through Happy Jack, complete with teens dancing in the foreground in what looks like some teeny bopper TV show from the 60's. Musically it's not of any real substance, but as a nostalgia piece it's a treat just to see them at that stage in their career (I don't think Keith had started shaving yet)
Please note as well, all performances are live, there is no lip synch crap on this DVD. This is real music, warts and all. The audio/video quality is sub-standard by today's standards, but this is the REAL DEAL. Previously unseen live footage of monster talents. Its like finding buried treasure for the real rock fan.
I love it.
One minor gripe: The Mountain song also appears on the "Hard Rocking" collection in the Rock Icons Series.

(More customer reviews)Naturally, the title tells it all. Well, not naturally, but in this case it just so happens to be so. Although, as you can tell, I gave it 3 stars, it really can be made 5 stars if you're for the most part a beginner. Thebook includes all of the unplugged songs, and they are even in TAB form.The only catch is that these TAB's aren't the actual TAB's Clapton plays.Thus, although you'll be playing a more complex version of the songs thenjust chords, it still won't have the same fingering as Claptons. Althoughthere is another version that actually has the exact fingering as Clapton(besides the solos, unfortunately), I haven't seen it on Amazon. There isone more version of the book on Amazon, but I'm pretty sure that it is thechords only verison, or sheet music version. Personally speeking, I've onlyplayed for around 1 1/2 years, and I have found the real version (the onewith Claptons actual fingering in TAB form, which isn't available onAmazon) to be rather easy, and rewarding. Although some songs you mightjust rather learn the chords for, others loose much of thier style whenplayed in only chords. Thus, I recommend going down to your local GuitarCenter and seeing if they have the real version in stock.As far as thecontent, it's what you expect from slowhand. Perfection. The album consistsof many blues classics, and the book is true to it. In my opinion, nearlyevery song on this album is worth knowing how to play if you wish toenhance your mastery of the blues. Get one version or another soon, though.

(More customer reviews)The "Concise Eric Clapton" is described as a Piano... Songbook but it offers only the vocal/guitar 'G' clef line. Only the right hand or guitar/vocal music is provided. There is no F clef, no music for the left hand. It is more like a 'fake' book than a songbook. If you just want to play simple guitar type chords with the melody, it is useable. However, I found it unacceptable for a piano/keyboard and poorly described.
