Eric Clapton - Crossroads Vol. 1* (Eric Clapton Vol. 1) Review

(More customer reviews)I've seen too many guitar tab books over the years to remember and I've learned that only a handful are truly excellent in terms of accuracy, ease of reading and overall use and these tend to be the ones that remain in my music library over time.For this reason, I'm usually tolerant of minor errors that are easily glossed over and that can be figured out myself as I play along with the cd with relative ease.This particular tab book on the early works of Eric Clapton as presented in the first 2 cds of the 4 disc Crossroads box set is a mixed bag.The transcriptions are mostly accurate although I have some different views with regards the choice of finger positions for certain tracks; these issues can come down to an individual preference issue and so I'm okay with it for the most part.For example, the guitar solo as transcribed for "A Certain Girl" isn't the optimal one as I feel the one I play sounds a lot more like the cd and is also a lot easier to play than the one in the book.

There is also a probably now dated essay on Clapton's life by Anthony DeCurtis a Senior Writer for Rolling Stone Magazine as well as another essay by the transcriber, Fred Sokolow, himself on Clapton's guitar stylings which is a nice-to-have and which is rare for most guitar tab books.The book binding though isn't optimal as the pages close in on themselves easily and it's hard to read the notes that are close to the spine because of this.The biggest downer for me though is that the font size is very small making it very difficult to read and play along with the cd at the same time.This is a real shame as the transciber probably put in a lot of work on this project only for the publisher to significantly reduce the usefulness and hence quality of the work with thoughtless publishing.Obviously the publisher is no musician and so doesn't understand how to publish music books that help instead of hinder the musician.Let's just say that I'm surprised that the publisher is actually Hal Leonard.Get your magnifying glasses ready and prepare to do a lot of hard pressing and smoothing down of the pages to keep them in place risking the pages coming off the spine while you play if you want to dig into this otherwise decent attempt at transcibing the work of this great guitarist.

Fingerstyle Guitar Review

(More customer reviews)Ken Perlman packs a gig bag-full of fingerstyle guitar into this book.While it definitely targets novice fingerstyle players, it is not a book for those just beginning to play the guitar.Although Perlman introduces tablature, he assumes the player can read standard notation and already has a good knowledge of the fingerboard.Also, because much of fingerstyle is based on movable chord positions, the student should have some facility negotiating between chords.
That said, the book begins by introducing the style of alternating bass and builds increasingly complex melodies and techniques over this basic pattern.The student will learn all the standard left hand techniques (hammer-on and pull-off notes, slides, graced notes, etc.) as well as some development of the right hand.Perlman's approach is to use individual songs to introduce each concept which keeps the learning process musical without being overly didactic.In my view, there are several points that elevate Fingerstyle Guitar above most other instructional books.First, Perlman selects great acoustic guitar music.If you like the simple yet wonderful style of Mississippi John Hurt, it's there within the first few pages.With about 40 songs in all, the blues, roots and Celtic tunes are great fun to play, and much of the credit goes to Perlman's arranging and writing abilities.I also like the way Perlman sets each song up, giving the student some context in regard to the composer, or the song's history.And finally, following each piece, Perlman focuses on specific measures in the song that may be problematic, such as fingering patterns in chord transitions or tricky syncopations.
While Fingerstyle Guitar starts from a very basic level, the pace of skill development is brisk.For example, open tunings are introduced barely half-way through the book.The tunes near the end of the book, such as Joplin's "The Entertainer", are definitely for the capable intermediate guitarist.Therefore, I would also recommend the book to anyone who has previous exposure to fingerstyle.
For the intermediate-to-advance level player, Perlman's Advanced Fingerstyle Guitar is an excellent companion book which follows the same basic format set-out in Fingerstyle Guitar.Centerstream Publications has done a good job in the clear presentation of text and notation for both books.I particularly like the use of archival photographs of musicians that begin each chapter.
Overall, you won't be disappointed with Perlman's approach to Fingerstyle Guitar.

(More customer reviews)I'm an avid fan of Tony's music.His approach is so unique, while sticking to the tune of the melodies.Tony's technique is simply amazing, and he applies it tastefully.When Tony does wonder off into the blue, it's only for short bursts, and his fun embellishments are always complementary.

I was so excited to see a single book housing the majority of Tony's music.Along with his Solo Banjo Works tab, this makes up a great deal of Tony's "classical library".I'm anxious to see a new book in the future with songs from Territory, to continue my collection.

The book is very easy to use, readable and alphabetically organized.Each tune is preceeded by a short intro from Tony, depicting little factoids and often including helpful hints for left and right hand movements.

I truly appreciate books like this.It's not often that the world is allowed such intimate details of a master's work.Thanks Tony!

I was privately trained in guitar for five years and have been playing for eight.
This book is sooooo much fun!!! There are lots of great chord progressions (and the accompanying chord charts above each chord), notes, and tableture. Many times you will alternate between the second and third fret and the eighth fret till the twelfth fret -- even seventeenth fret I believe!
Lots of hammer-ons and pull-offs and harmonics *yum!*
These songs are absolutely STUNNING.
Unlike many guitar books which dumb-down the text so it's easier for those who can't really play guitar...this one is aimed toward people who are experienced in more advanced territory. Although it is more advanced, your fingers will just slide across the neck. It's not awkward music to play at all!!! Very smooth and just stunning.
Lots of incredible pieces!!!

Beginning Fingerstyle Arranging & Technique for Guitar (Book & CD) Review

(More customer reviews)This book is a very good book - BUT for music theory NOT for arranging.

I thought that with this book I would be able to listen to a song I liked and then have the tools to figure out how to arrange it to be played on the guitar.That the book would show me how to listen to a song and then figure out what key it is in, whether I needed to add a baseline and what type, what kind of finger picking I should do, how I should play the chords or just appregiate them, and so on.

Instead, this book is about fingerpicking -in general-.Its about keys -in general-.Its about I-IV-V chords -in general-.

I have no more ability to arrange anything after reading this book than I did before.

Now if somebody had no idea about music theory AT ALL I would say this is a fine book, great even.But there are lots of fine books on music theory.

And if you like what it says about finger picking and Travis picking I would ask "Why is this listed as accompanying their fingerpicking series of books 1 through 3 then, don't they cover fingerpicking?"Yes they do obviously, so its a rehash in this book.

Soooo, if you want to become a composer of music and able to take a song you like and make a version of it for the guitar then forget it, this book is not for you.

Unless you're the type that can take a book of grammar and from it know how to become a writer.

(More customer reviews)I first used this book as a student in 1976.Since that time, I have taught more than 100 students Bluegrass banjo using this book with 100% success.The book allows me to teach a basic style of strumming and lefthand technique, preparatory to learning standard roles and licks associatedwith three finger style.By the time my students reach the introduction toScruggs Style, they have already mastered or are on their way to masteringhammer-ons, pull-offs, and slides; not to mention several cords.Thisevolution allows me to concentrate on right hand technique (rolls).Whenall is said and done, the student emerges from the book with at least twostyles of banjo playing.I have found the techniques related to clawhammer banjo, as presented in the first section of this book, an invaluableaddition to my repertoire.In fact, I primarily use claw hammer as a meansof playing accompaniment.In conclusion, anyone serious about effectivebanjo instruction should seriously consider this book for his or herstudents.

(More customer reviews)Mark Hanson has done a fine job of arranging the original orchestrations for fingerstyle guitar.Some of it is approachable by the advanced beginner; intermediate guitarists should find their efforts rewarded with a fun little repetoire which offers room for musical expression.(There are some fairly tricky harmonics.)The more advanced guitaristcan develop a suite with much charm and a great deal of humor.
Mark's study notes anticipate most technical problems the student will encounter.It would have been helpful if they were printed with each piece instead of in their own section.As usual, the CD is a great study aid.CDs with music books are the greatest thing since the pull tab. Oh, and I wish they'd printed Yip Harburg's wonderful lyrics somewhere.In TAB and standard notation.

Teach Yourself Bluegrass Banjo W/cd Review

It's didn't seem to offer enough variety of learning exercises at each new skill, so that I felt stuck trying to learn the same example over and over. I gave up on this book and bought "A Manual on How to Play the 5-String Bango for the Complete Ignoramus" by Wayne Erbsen (...) and I'm now having a great time learning clawhammer style as well as the slides, etc. that seemed so frustrating in Tony's book. Maybe it's better if you have more banjo experience to start with.

(More customer reviews)This is a very nice collection of advanced solo pieces for jazz guitar. The selection is very solid, and the arrangments are really top notch. Jamie clearly put a lot of effort into this project and the outcome is apparant. There is virtually no pedagogy here - just the raw arrangments and a well recorded CD of jamie playing each tune at a performance level at normal speed. The CD alone is worth the cost of the package just as a listening CD. But be warned: although the arrangments are clean and sensibly voiced, the pieces are complex and will take considerable effort to master - but they are well worth it.
