Garcia: Collector's Edition (Piano/Vocal/Chords) Review

Garcia: Collector's Edition [Paperback]

Wow! Someone finally reissued this excellent book.First published by Straight Arrow Publishers, I bought my copy new back in '72 and read it often. It is a great interview with Garcia at a time when the Dead were just taking off. Garcia reveals he "has just made the commitment" to see where the music takes him, and as we all know, the band really went places. Hopefully, the current publishers have reissued it in its original form.
The second part of the book, "A Stoned Sunday Rap," is a great piece that really gets to the heart and soul of the Dead experience, beyond the music. I've always admired the philosophy behind the music for its zen-like approach to life and living; Garcia and Reich tease out the details.
A must-read for anyone who enjoys the Dead.Much better than any of the tell-alls that have been published recently.

Read the Beatles: Classic and New Writings on the Beatles, Their Legacy, and Why They Still Matter Review

Read the Beatles: Classic and New Writings on the Beatles, Their Legacy, and Why They Still Matter [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an extremely well-put-together anthology of writings about the Beatles, spanning their entire career as a group and then following each in their post-Beatles years. It includes most of the seminal reviews, interviews and articles about the Beatles from beginning to end (such as the Maureen Cleve/Lennon interview, the William Mann London Times reviews legitimizing the Beatles as serious musicians and songwriters, sections from the Playboy interviews with John Lennon and Yoko Ono, excellent writing on the elusive George Harrison and his musical contributions by David Simons, and much more) and essays on why the Beatles still matter.

The book is set up in three distinct parts

I.Articles written during the Beatles years, in chronological order.
II. Articles written about individual Beatles post-Beatles, arranged by individual.
III.Articles and essays about the Beatles legacy.

I knew quite a bit about the Beatles before reading this book, but I learned much that was new and interesting that has heightened my appreciation of these fine musician/songwriters and their legacy.

Five stars, and then some.A+

Eric Clapton - Crossroads Vol. 1* (Eric Clapton Vol. 1) Review

Eric Clapton - Crossroads Vol. 1* [Paperback]

I've seen too many guitar tab books over the years to remember and I've learned that only a handful are truly excellent in terms of accuracy, ease of reading and overall use and these tend to be the ones that remain in my music library over time. For this reason, I'm usually tolerant of minor errors that are easily glossed over and that can be figured out myself as I play along with the cd with relative ease. This particular tab book on the early works of Eric Clapton as presented in the first 2 cds of the 4 disc Crossroads box set is a mixed bag.The transcriptions are mostly accurate although I have some different views with regards the choice of finger positions for certain tracks; these issues can come down to an individual preference issue and so I'm okay with it for the most part. For example, the guitar solo as transcribed for "A Certain Girl" isn't the optimal one as I feel the one I play sounds a lot more like the cd and is also a lot easier to play than the one in the book.

There is also a probably now dated essay on Clapton's life by Anthony DeCurtis a Senior Writer for Rolling Stone Magazine as well as another essay by the transcriber, Fred Sokolow, himself on Clapton's guitar stylings which is a nice-to-have and which is rare for most guitar tab books. The book binding though isn't optimal as the pages close in on themselves easily and it's hard to read the notes that are close to the spine because of this. The biggest downer for me though is that the font size is very small making it very difficult to read and play along with the cd at the same time. This is a real shame as the transciber probably put in a lot of work on this project only for the publisher to significantly reduce the usefulness and hence quality of the work with thoughtless publishing.Obviously the publisher is no musician and so doesn't understand how to publish music books that help instead of hinder the musician.Let's just say that I'm surprised that the publisher is actually Hal Leonard.Get your magnifying glasses ready and prepare to do a lot of hard pressing and smoothing down of the pages to keep them in place risking the pages coming off the spine while you play if you want to dig into this otherwise decent attempt at transcibing the work of this great guitarist.

Funk Bass Attack Review

Funk Bass Attack

If you think that this is an instructional DVD--it is not. There are no frame-in-frame closeups showing Larry's playing techniques. This is a video of Larry playing a few tunes in a studio with a couple of his old bandmates. If you're into that, the DVD is interesting.

If you expect some guidance concerning funk bass playing, you will be very disatisfied. For funk bass instruction try the Francis Rocco Prestis (Fingerstyle Funk - VHS only) and Alex Sklarevski (Slap Bass) videos..both are great.

The Official Dick Van Dyke Show Book (Applause Books) Review

The Official Dick Van Dyke Show Book [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

This book features an amazing amount of insight into one of the very best television programs to ever grace the airwaves, "The Dick Van Dyke Show".
If you're an avid fan of this 1961-1966 CBS-TV program, trust me, you will NOT be able to stop turning pages until you've read the whole thing!
In each chapter, we learn new tidbits of behind-the-scenes information. There's info (including some brief biographical data) about every single member of the show's stellar cast.
For example: Did You Know .... that the audience laughter went on so long when Greg Morris & his on-screen spouse entered the Petrie home at the end of the episode "That's My Boy??" that the editor actually had to cut out some of the audience hysterics in order to fit the episode into the allowable timeframe? (Too bad, too. I'd love to have heard the WHOLE thing.A great episode indeed.)
The book also reveals the fact that Mary Tyler Moore stormed off the set in a huff one time, while doing the ultimately-classic episode, "Never Bathe On Saturday".She was upset because she was off-camera and talking through a door for most of the show. But, after seeing how funny the show worked as written, MTM felt bad about her tirade.
"Never Bathe On Saturday" features Dick's great line, after finding that the hotel bathroom door is locked: "Don't toy with me, you saucy wench.":)LOL!!!!
Plus there's a complete episode guide, with still more tidbits written within most of the episode descriptions.
I cannot imagine a more thorough and detailed Dick Van Dyke Show volume than this one. This book is a MUST for any fan of this highly-intelligent and magnificently-written TV program.

American Troubadours: Groundbreaking Singer-Songwriters of the 60s [Paperback]

this book has chapters on some of the best songwriters of the era, ranging from the, more or less anyway, fairly well known ( like tim buckley and phil ochs)to the undeservedly obscure, like david ackles. these artists do vary in quality, but the stories are always at least interesting, and often fascinating. there are lots of fine pictures of the performers in the book as well,if anything the work is a little short. people who enjoy the writings of richie unterberger and vernon joynson probably will like this as well

The Best of Stevie Wonder (Piano/Vocal/Guitar Artist Songbook) Review

The Best of Stevie Wonder [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Though "The Best of Stevie Wonder" claims to "include detailed musical examples [and] lessons...of Stevie Wonder's best 14 songs," the book includes no lessons or detailed musical examples. It is basically a sheet music book. What the writer believes is a detailed analysis of Stevie Wonders' songs is just a paragraph that describes both the key and chords extensions types of the song. THIS IS STUFF THAT ONE WOULD LEARN JUST BY GLANCING AT THE SHEET MUSIC. If you are looking for Stevie Wonder sheet music, than buy it. If you are looking for a book that will breake down Stevie Wonder's playing style, than you will be disappointed.
