Jaco Pastorius -- Modern Electric Bass (DVD with Overpack) Review

Jaco Pastorius -- Modern Electric Bass
Average Reviews:

This instructional book gives many exercises from Jaco himself. It has a cd that comes with it that helps out. It covers harmonics (has a chart) and ways to improve your left hand speed, precision, and clarity. The book itself is clear enough that you can use it to teach yourself. Though the book goes with the video (of the same name) so it's good to get both. Also, on the cd is a jam session with jaco and an interview. All in all it's a great value and no jaco collection is complete without it.

The book does a nice job of presenting classic song bass lines in a progressive manner. As a teacher I also appreciate the lack of tab which forces students to read the notes and not just the numbers.

Ultimate Play Along Just Classic Jazz Bass Vol3 w/CD (Ultimate Play-Along) Review

Ultimate Play Along Just Classic Jazz Bass Vol3 w/CD [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

If you're looking for books on "how to" play bass or read music then skip this one. There's almost no instruction in this book, but what you do get is GREAT tab and notation for some standard jazz pieces.
This book is good for learning the traditional bass lines and for practicing your timing/tempo when there's no one else around.I wish the CD had two versions of each song (one with and one without bass), but it doesn't.For the price, though, this is a pretty good way to learn some songs and practice without having a full band in your garage.
Nine standard jazz pieces are covered. Each song comes with the actual tune on CD, the printed song with bass clef and tab, and if that weren't enough you also get the bass solo and lead sheet.
Be careful, though, the lead sheet is not in tablature, so you should already know (or be willing to learn) how to read traditional music notation.Fortunately, since the book includes both the full version (notation and tablature) you can easily go back and forth as you progress. The lead sheet is great for taking on stage since it has all the essentials for the song on one easy to read sheet.

Ultimate Beginner Bass Basics (The Ultimate Beginner Series) Review

Ultimate Beginner Bass Basics [Paperback]

I have been playing guitar for 10 years and know what it takes to become a serious guitar player.I bought this book for a church youth group kid who is a true beginner at playing any instrument. It is the best bass guitar book ever written for beginners.I have tried to find a bass guitar tutorial over the internet that is free, but this book was worth paying the $8.95.This book comes with a cd that provides a thorough tutorial. The voice on the cd and the play-along segments made me feel like I was getting a private bass lesson from a professional. If you're debating whether or not to get this book, I would say that if you're a beginner and want to learn the basics of bass guitar as well as the slap/pop technique, I strongly recommend this book. Don't forget to check "yes" if you thought that my recommendation was helpful!

There are two versions of this book. ISBN 079356378 comes with the CD. ISBN 079356378X does not come with the CD. Don't make the same mistake I did. I wanted the CD and had to return this book and reorder the correct version. Minus one star for Amazon packaging this in a special with Book 3 which comes with a CD while this one doesn't. Very misleading.

Ok... at first it looks like a book full of classic blues lines and patterns. But after a while you find out it challenges you to build your own blues lines using JJ's basic techniques for creating tension over the song (lead-in, pick ups, hassitations etc...)

It also stresses on the importance of timing, which is crucial for succeeding to play the harder basslines that are included in the middle and at the end of the book. I studied on this one for months to really understand the basics of it. Great fun for the bassfanatics!!!!!

Taught myself guitar in no time.Get the CD out of the book, play along with the songs, learn them (don't cheat by moving on until you have mastered the song just like the CD plays it), and soon enough you'll have mastered strings.Chords take a bit of practice, but once you get those, you feel pretty good about playing guitar. Then its off to level 2.A most efficient "self teaching" method I must say.Addicting almost.

If you are just getting into Jamaican music or know somebody who is you have to purchase this book. It will teach you how to play ska, rocksteady, dub and reggae. If you think that this is an instructional DVD--it is not. There are no frame-in-frame closeups showing Larry's playing techniques. This is a video of Larry playing a few tunes in a studio with a couple of his old bandmates. If you're into that, the DVD is interesting.

If you expect some guidance concerning funk bass playing, you will be very disatisfied. For funk bass instruction try the Francis Rocco Prestis (Fingerstyle Funk - VHS only) and Alex Sklarevski (Slap Bass) videos..both are great.

Exercises and Etudes for the Jazz Instrumentalist: Bass Clef Edition (Instructional) Review

Exercises and Etudes for the Jazz Instrumentalist: Bass Clef Edition [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has a ton of fun etudes and exercises to play through. They book is great sight reading practice because there are so many etudes that you can play a few every day and not repeat any for a long time.

The only thing that I slightly dislike is that there is very little information about the style that each etude should be played in.I think that's the point of the book; to teach you to figure out how to play melodically without relying on what is indicated on the page. But sometimes you just don't know.It says "Medium slow ballad," but is it straight or swung? The tempo is indicated as half-note = 100, and some of the rhythms look latin, so should I play it with a latin feel? This is only a minor problem though because usually it is pretty clear and I guess I am learning to make style decisions myself, which is good. The book might be better if some etudes are played with the guidance of a teacher though; I just play by myself so I can't judge that.

Overall, very good jazz book for trombone.

Essential Bass Technique: The Definitive Technique Manual for Bass Guitar (Bass Instruction) Review

Essential Bass Technique: The Definitive Technique Manual for Bass Guitar [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book teaches the bassist the "proper" techniques for playing bass efficiently (and safely). The author not only explains left and right hand techniques, but additionally goes into detailing the reasoning behind the techniques. The beginner who applies the mechanics explained in the book will have a very solid foundation for playing bass, and more advanced players are likely to modify their techniques and/or integrate new concepts and techniques into their own playing.
As I learned each technique I immediately applied it until it felt "natural" and my playing has greatly benefited from this book.
As the previous reviewer mentioned, there are not that many exercises in the book.
I would give it 41/2 stars.
Regarding the comments by "a reader" about the book barely scratching the surface, I actually believe it is very thorough when it comes to right/left hand techniques. As the title says, it deals with essential techniques. Readers wanting to learn about slap and pop techniques, for example, should look elsewhere. Also, this book is focused on the mechanics involved in playing bass, but it is not a bass method. Beginning bassists will want to use this book in conjunction with other books.

Product Description:
Peter Murray's new book, which scored an "A+" rating from Bass Player magazine, provides bassists with everything they need to know to play effectively, helping them master the basics, and then explore what's beyond. Essential to any bass player!"Once in a while, a book comes along that stands head and shoulders above the endless rows of 'method books' that fill the racks in music stores. This is one of those exceptional books. If you're a beginner, study of Murray's method could save you from countless hours of frustration (and possibly injury) by showing you the correct way to use you hands right from the start; if you're a more advanced player, it should help you to refine your ability and overcome the technical barriers that can block further development. Bravo!" - Jim Roberts, Bass Player magazine

Bass Player Presents the Fretless Bass Review

Bass Player Presents the Fretless Bass [Paperback]

While I may be a bit biased towards the fretless bass - this book is certainly very well done.Chris Jisi, from Bass Player, has assembled some of the most influential fretless players on the planet, to talk about technique, music, style, and technical aspects of fretless bass. The book is well organized, with some great information about music available, as well as who's playing what.

The book is rounded out by some great luthiers and builders discussing care & feeding of a proper fretless.

I also love the center section with some full page, and full color, Bass Player Magazine covers of great fretless players that have graced their pages. That's a very nice bonus.

If you are at all interested in fretless bass - this book is a keeper!

I wrote a email to Bacon and Moorhouse detailing my reasons for the above title. I own alot of Gibsons and Epiphones been playing out and in for over 30 years. They talk very little on the great Gibsons and the large list of known players of Gibsons, they pretty much state that the Tbird was all Gibson could do right. If i could have looked at it before buying I wouldnt have bought it. Should have been called "The Fender Bass Book", uninformed or definitely biased big time.
