Jaco Pastorius -- Modern Electric Bass (DVD with Overpack) Review

Jaco Pastorius -- Modern Electric Bass
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This instructional book gives many exercises from Jaco himself. It has a cd that comes with it that helps out. It covers harmonics (has a chart) and ways to improve your left hand speed, precision, and clarity. The book itself is clear enough that you can use it to teach yourself. Though the book goes with the video (of the same name) so it's good to get both. Also, on the cd is a jam session with jaco and an interview. All in all it's a great value and no jaco collection is complete without it.

The book does a nice job of presenting classic song bass lines in a progressive manner. As a teacher I also appreciate the lack of tab which forces students to read the notes and not just the numbers.

This book provides a nice bass sound that seems to go well with the songs involved. I am sure you can dress it up a lot, but as written I think others will be a little impressed if you are just starting out.

There are two versions of this book. ISBN 079356378 comes with the CD. ISBN 079356378X does not come with the CD. Don't make the same mistake I did. I wanted the CD and had to return this book and reorder the correct version. Minus one star for Amazon packaging this in a special with Book 3 which comes with a CD while this one doesn't. Very misleading.

This book is very helpful and it covers many different styles ofplayingand different techiniques such as the "in and out" techniquewhich makes playing sixteen notes eaiser. It covers slapping, and justbasic right hand technique. It also hasa whole chapter on soloing andexplains basslines and turnaround and chords. The only problem is thatthere is no tablature,so you have to learn to read music, which there is achapter on. I really recommend this book.

Exercises and Etudes for the Jazz Instrumentalist: Bass Clef Edition (Instructional) Review

Exercises and Etudes for the Jazz Instrumentalist: Bass Clef Edition [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book has a ton of fun etudes and exercises to play through. They book is great sight reading practice because there are so many etudes that you can play a few every day and not repeat any for a long time.

The only thing that I slightly dislike is that there is very little information about the style that each etude should be played in.I think that's the point of the book; to teach you to figure out how to play melodically without relying on what is indicated on the page. But sometimes you just don't know.It says "Medium slow ballad," but is it straight or swung? The tempo is indicated as half-note = 100, and some of the rhythms look latin, so should I play it with a latin feel? This is only a minor problem though because usually it is pretty clear and I guess I am learning to make style decisions myself, which is good. The book might be better if some etudes are played with the guidance of a teacher though; I just play by myself so I can't judge that.

Overall, very good jazz book for trombone.

Serious Electric Bass (Contemporary Bass Series) Review

Serious Electric Bass [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

This book is packed with endless info on the subject - scales and chords. By practicing the excercises in it, one can begin developing a good ear and understand why basslines of some songs are played the way they are.
In fact, this book is teaching me that there are many contemporary songs that are done in modes of common scales. I didn't even know such a thing existed!
Another thing is that you get a great appreciation for the neck and the note values along it by using this book in practice.
You would have to be able to sight-read for this book though, since tab is not used.
The first few sections - particularly the part on setting up and adjusting your bass - are invaluable, as they offer clear instructions that demystify the fear of 'DIY' on your bass.
The only problem I had was that one of the pages (I think it was p.55) was double-printed, so the page before it was not there. Otherwise, this book is an important investment for players who want to understand the relationships between chords and to develop their ear.
