Strogly recommended for the beginning guitarist, elementary school teacher, camp counselor who want to include music in a group setting.Forthe aspiring guitarist, the text includesdiagrams of the nine strum orpick patterns that can be used with the songs. Each title in the book hasa suggested pick/strum pattern.Other easy guitar books sometimes includethis feature.I found these patterns to be very helpful as a self-techingmethod. The songs are well known popular children's songs that arefamiliar to everyone and can be used in any recreational/ educationalseting with children.I liked the book in so far as it helpled me practiceguitar skills that I am acquiring (the chords are basic to easy guitar) andprovided me material to use in my work setting.

This is a good selection of songs. Some of the songs are traditional, but many are more recent songs from musicals, TV and movies. I remember a lot of these songs from watching Sesame Street growing up. The accompaniment varies in difficulty. The book is hard to keep open on a music stand.

Elementaria: First Acquaintance with Orff-Schulwerk [Paperback]

I am tempted to give this book a 6, since it is considered the bible of the Orff-Schulwerk approach.Sure enough, it gives complete instructions on how to set up an instrumental ensemble, how to play the instruments, and how to teach the gross motor activity. In fact, it presents some ideas which I put to immediate use in my work as a preschool English teacher in Korea.

But theory is important as well as method. Why should certain activities be taught? Why should the instruments be played a certain way?Why is the Orff approach better than the others? Why are certain musical activities and gross motor activities beneficial? If these questions were answered, I would give this book a 6.

The Peter Paul and Mary Song Book Review

The Peter Paul and Mary Song Book [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I began playing guitar in the early seventies, when the hippie generation had helped to bring folk music to the forefront of the popular music scene. The major forces behind the success of folk music at that time -- finally reaching all across America on the radio waves -- were Peter, Paul and Mary. They sang songs that they loved, and became part of our lives; these are the songs you will find in this book. The ones you remember, half-hummed snatches of tunes for every mood and moment. The book features both piano and guitar accompaniment. If I were to find fault with the book, it would be that there were still so many songs I wanted which were not included here, and that it did not have a spiral binding, and so my first copy split and finally needed to be replaced after many well-loved years. This book is the right place to start as you begin learning the best songs to know in the folk tradition.

333 Reading Exercises [Paperback]

Recommended for any vocal or instrumental student. In fact, when I was taking voice lessons, I used these exercises on my own.

The exercises are written on a single line, in solfege notation for some exercises and in conventional notation for others.

The exercises are categorized according to tone row.Recorder teachers may be especially interested in pages 1-3 and 8, which, if played in G major, are playable with the fingers of the left hand. However, a teacher following the Choksy sequence would not be able to use any of the exercises in the beginning stages.

"BOB DYLAN Made Easy for Guitar" is more title than description.Featuring 22 songs ranging from the well known (Tangled Up in Blue), to the obsure (Man Gave Names to All the Animals), Dylan Made Easy doesn'tgive any hints or suggestions to accomplish that promise. This is simply asongbok featuring Dylan's material in their orginal keys;however, thesongs are notatated with chords and rythm slashes. The songs themselvesare not necessarily easy. Most songs quite often contain barre chords orwould be easy to play with barre chords or capo's.I was hoping that thisbook would explain simpler, easier, methods to obtain the melodies andrythms that pervade Bob Dylan songs. This book is good is a fairly goodsongbook if your looking for a variety of Dylan material.

Old Town School of Folk Music Songbook (Music Pro Guides) Review

Old Town School of Folk Music Songbook [Paperback]

I am teaching myself acoustic bass and found this book, in combination with the CD's -- available separately -- to be a great learning tool. The book and the CDs aren't strictly designed as a package, but there is probably about 80% overlap between the songs on the CDs and those in this volume. The performances on the CDs are very good, by the way. Anyhow, the combination provides many hours of useful and enjoyable practice, especially if you are almost ready to play along with others.

Clawhammer Banjo Review

Clawhammer Banjo [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
....
Be that as it may, this is a wonderful book to develope a basic repertoire of Appalachian mountain tunes on the banjo. If you're a beginner, get this, but don't use it until you've worked from some of the simpler books such as Muller's "Frailing the 5-String Banjo."
The clawhammer style of playing a banjo is essentially single string frailing. It's origins lie in the old fiddle tunes from the Appalachians. The primary focus of Krassen's book is the clawhammer style centered around Galax, Virginia/Mt. Airy, north Carolina/Bluefield, West Virginia.
Once you've learned a little about the basic banjo strum and other essentials, Krassen's book is the place to go to get a feel for some basic arrangements of old-time standards. What I particularly like about Krassen's arrangements is that each tune is set out in a very simple to read tablature; each tab in turn lays out a basic bare-bones structure for each tune. These arrangements in turn are perfect for allowing the banjoist to incorporate sundry other techniques to flesh out a tune when accompanying a fiddle player.
Krassen emphasizes two important themes regarding clawhammer banjo playing: (1) the primary rhythmic aspect of the banjo, rather than melodic and (2) the importance of using the banjo to highlight only essential notes of the melody and letting the fiddle do the talking.
You won't find very much in terms of instruction here. That's done much better in other books. But if you've developed some competence in the basics of playing...it's a resourceful place to go next in your development.

Joni Mitchell: Hits (Authentic Guitar-Tab) Review

Joni Mitchell: Hits [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a response to the reviewer who pointed out that this costs more money than "Anthology", but contains many fewer songs, you're correct.

However, "Hits" (as well as "Misses") transcribes each song using the tuning Joni used to play it. Joni is notorious for using alternative tunings on all her songs (except for the piano based ones of course). She's used about 50 different tunings (!), and never uses standard tuning on her songs.

And that's the key - "Joni Mitchell Anthology" assumes everything in standing tuning (EADGBE). This makes things complicated; for example, if you're playing "Chelsea Morning" in standard tuning versus the tuning Joni played it in (open E tuning I think), it's totally different. The voicings won't be the same, and it'll probably be difficult, because the chords are strange. However, the "Hits" book tells you the correct tuning. And turns out, it's a very easy song to play. And it sounds perfect. Joel Bernstein did a fantastic job. He also knows Joni, so he's not just guessing with these tunings - they're the real deal.

So yes, you're not getting as many songs with "Hits". But it's a small price to pay for true accuracy. So it comes down to this:

If you want to try and play Joni's songs just like she does, "Hits" (and "Misses") is the book for you.

If you don't want to fumble around with weird tunings, and want a large library of songs, stick with "Anthology".

Bob Dylan: The 6 Chord Songbook, Easy Guitar Edition Review

Bob Dylan: The 6 Chord Songbook, Easy Guitar Edition [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Advanced players stay away, but this is as good a beginning guitar book to learn to play and strum that there is. The chords are simple, so spending time with this book will really teach you to comfortably play G and C chord songs.

Many of the songs are "dumbed down" or have had the key moved. Purists will be unhappy, as the songs lose a lot of that Bob Dylan funk, but, nonetheless, virtually every song in the book sounds good when played and is recognizable. Plus, for beginners, almost every song can be played with either a Carter-Style strum or a simple 1 2 3+ 4+ strum pattern.

Within weeks, you'll be able to play Dylan songs recognizably and, if you have even been playing for 6 months, you'll be able to play many of these songs on the first run-through.

Product Description:
The Bob Dylan 6 Chord Songbook allows even the beginning guitarist to play and enjoy the magic of Dylan's music. By learning 6 simple chords you will soon master 20 of his best songs.
The Bob Dylan 6 Chord Songbook does not use musical notation. All you need to learn is 6 chords and their symbols. The chord boxes are printed on each page to remind you, and the chord changes are shown above the lyrics. If you find the pitch of a song outside your vocal range, simply place your capo behind a suitable fret and use the same chord shapes! The strum rhythm or picking pattern most suited to the song is left for you to decide. The Bob Dylan 6 Chord Songbook guarantees hours of enjoyment for guitarists of all levels, as well as providing a fine basis for building a strong repertoire. When you have mastered the first 6 chords, you will want to progress to six more chords with these lessons. These are described within the text and illustrated in a comprehensive Chord Glossary at the back of the book.
