The only downside is the paper quality, which is thin, but then it is balanced by the excellent price. I would recommend it highly for practice/learning, but use a higher quality score to take to competitions or juries.

(More customer reviews)No "fake book", or "real book" this.You get full, well-thought-out harmonizations.This isn't how Jazz pianists acquire their numbers, but hey, this graduate of the weekly visit to the traditional read-the-music-and-play-it-exactly-as-written piano teacher likes it just fine this way.Having played through about 25% of the songs, I'll say there are no really bad arrangements, and quite a few very good ones.The technical difficulty is toward the higher end of the non-classical stuff you find in the music stores -- the average song is about as hard (if you want to play all the notes) as a Chopin Waltz or a Clementi Sonatina.

(More customer reviews)I have been waiting for this book for thirty years. I missed it the first time around when it was published in the late 1970s. Luckily it has been reprinted.

It is fairly complex due to the nature of the music and the mini score notation. However, should you want to play some of John McLaughlin's music and or understand its structure this book is a good place to start.

The scores have been produced with a great deal of care. Most of the scores are laid out with the 'normal' early Mahavishnu Orchestra instrumentation (bass, drums, guitar, keyboards, and violin). The scores seem to have been faithfully produced from the original recordings, and additional parts have been given where necessary. Useful key/mode guides for ad libbing have also been given.

Classic Rock - Keyboard Recorded Versions Review

(More customer reviews)This book is somewhat similar to Hal Leonard's other classic rock keyboard transcription book, but features a few songs not found in the other one. Although the other reviewer for some reason seemed disappointed by finding all the keyboard parts written out, that is actually the beauty of this book. It's not another PVG book full of cheesy piano arrangements. It's the real keyboard parts, and all of them. Guitarists have been enjoying accurate rock transcriptions for years now, so it's great to see the same kind of material being made available for keyboard. Keep 'em coming!

(More customer reviews)If you have learned or studied some music theory then this book is OK.If you haven't you might get lost in the theory as the book "presumes" that you know some theory.The lesson plans are good and I believe that by the time you get all the way through the book you would know how to play keyboard. I am taking lessons from a piano teacher as well as using this book, and I have some music theory training. If theory is completely new to you then I would suggest a keyboard book in the "For Dummies" line; or find someone who can explain basic theory to you. It does help to have some theory knowledge as it helps with rhythm & tempo in your playing.

Unlike a lot of other "learn piano" books, this one is really light on the hand-holding at the beginning, which made me really glad. There is a decent amount of theory and it is presented early on, which I think is important.

I inadvertently found myself in an indie rock band not long ago and this book has helped me out considerably since it's much more practical than a lot of beginner's piano books. You will start learning to improvise and harmonize with other band members very early instead of playing yawn-inducing songs such as Ode to Joy.

Often, publishers write incorrect fingering and/or dynamics, and this book appears to have notsubdued to that level. The publishers obviously knew what Chopin wanted anddelivered just that instead of placing marks they thought were appropriate.

(More customer reviews)Ignore my title. No serious student of piano would teach themselves, though a few good ones have. And if you must do it that way, this book should be your first buy. I picked up Hanon 3 years ago when I got back into piano study. For a year and a half, I thought all this book had to offer was exercises. Good exercises, mind you, and that was sufficient for me. However, I only recently got deeper into this book and realized there is a great deal more here for advancing your piano skills -- like proper scale fingerings and such.
Hanon is based on a total of 60 exercises for finger strength, stability, and performance. It takes a long time to work up all 60, but once you are there, you can daily work through each one consecutively or otherwise to warm up and improve your skills.
This book is essential for any pianist, whether you are training classically or to play pop. Whether by ear or by reading (or hopefully both), it isn't a real challenge to learn the basic reading required for these exercises (they start in the key of C -- no black notes -- and stay that way for a while). The beginner can start with exercise one and move forward at their own pace.

(More customer reviews)This book is a timely resource for anyone who has to deal with chord symbols--such as is found on rhythm charts and lead sheets-- and wants to know how to play them on the piano or keyboard. It even could help an arranger who has landed on a chord he likes but doesn't know what to call it.
This book has a Chord Construction section at the beginning, consisting of a review of the role that scales play, intervals, chords, inversions, altered triads and chord names. That's just 4 pages, so it doesn't bog down there. Next follows the major section of the book, which consists of *78* major and minor chords for each of the 12 notes of the scale. Each chord is depicted with what the chord looks like on a staff, what it would look like on a keyboard (the affected keys are shaded), and what its chord symbol typically would be. In the key of C, for example, you'd see everything from a plain old "C" chord to something like "C13 b5 #9" (whew!).
The final section of the book deals with what the left hand could do against the chords (whatever they are and against whatever rhythms your RH might be playing them). It provides info about such styles as boogie-woogie, funk, jazz & blues, swing, latin, rock and shuffle. There are multiple possible LH rhythms given for each of those, giving you variety in your possible choices. There also are multiple depictions of combination RH/LH patterns for rhythm & blues, gospel, country and rock.
This is one of those resource books that you like to have handy in your music library, for when you need it you'll probably REALLY need it right then!

I would greatly recommend this book if you are sick of playing yankee doodle or any other book with boring sheet music. Contained in the book is an adequate description of the genre and presents perfect examples that you can learn. I found this book very satisfying and not too hard. I also have the rock keyboard and find that one great as well. So do buy these books.
