Mikrokosmos Volume 4 (Pink) (Mikrokosmos (Boosey & Hawkes)) Review

Mikrokosmos Volume 4) [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hungarian composer Bela Bartok, whose reputation as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century is now firmly established, composed the Mikrokosmos between 1926 and 1939 with the express purpose of teaching his son, Peter, how to play piano, though level IV is the last volume (of VI) intended purely as instructional material.

These pieces are pedagogically and aesthetically impressive.Beginning in book one, Bartok makes remarkable artistic use of the most simple tools, often limiting himself to a set of five notes per hand (exercises without shifts). The works are not all diatonic, encouraging trust in the eyes and a true ability to read not always achieved by more predictable exercises.Skills are developed systematically to tunes beautiful to the ear, delightful to the theoretician, and engaging to the student.

Product Description:
The definitive edition (1987) of the piano teaching classic. Includes an introduction by the composer's son Peter Bartok. (English/French/German/Hungarian text). In 1945 Bela Bartok described Mikrokosmos as a cycle of 153 pieces for piano written for "didactic" purposes, seeing them as a series of pieces in many different styles, representing a small world, or as the "world of the little ones, the children".Stylistically Mikrokosmos reflects the influence of folk music on Bartok's life and the rhythms and harmonies employed create music that is as modern today as when the cycle was written. The 153 pieces making up Mikrokosmos are divided into six volumes arranged according to technical and musical difficulty. Major teaching points highlighted in Mikrokosmos 4: Thumb undervention, crossed hands, triplets in 9/8 time.

Contemporary Piano Repertoire - Level 1: Rock, Swing, Blues, Ballads, and More! Review

Contemporary Piano Repertoire - Level 1: Rock, Swing, Blues, Ballads, and More [Paperback]

If you are an adult and just learning to play the piano this books is a wonderful antidote to Aund Rhody's Gray Goose and the usual beginner stuff you get in basic level piano instruction books. This one has standards such as Georgia on My Mind, and most of the arrangements are good as well as simple. The only disappointment was The Girl From Ipanema.I asked several friends who can play the piano to run through it for me because I thought it was my beginner ineptitude, but the arrangment is strange. The rest that I've learned so far have been very good.I'm grateful for this book.

I use this book to teach my students, ages 5-11 how to play piano from the most basic level. It has been wonderful. Not only are the songs fun to play, but a lot of them are tunes that the kids know, which makes it more fun for them.It also incorporates the theory in with the playing, so my students never get too bored!I highly recommend these books to any piano teacher looking for a good book to start their students on!

Piano Student / Primer Level (David Carr Glover Piano Library) Review

Piano Student / Primer Level [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

This is an excellent book for young kids beginning to learn the piano. It starts with very simple tunes and gradually introduces more complex elements. Kids who are just beginning to learn the piano can have the pleasure of playing tunes rather than doing monotonous mechanical finger work. However, I am not a musician by a long shot and we do not intend to make our kids into concert pianists. We want our kids to have fun and to learn and enjoy music and this book works wonderfully for us.

The School of Velocity, Opus 299: Complete (Alfred Masterwork Edition) Review

The School of Velocity, Opus 299: Complete [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If this is too intimidating for you, I would start with Czerny -- Practical Method, Op. 599 (Complete) (Alfred Masterwork Edition), which is thinner and simpler than this.

If THAT'S too difficult for you, I would fall back to Preliminary School of Dexterity, Op. 636, which is about as low as you can go and still be playing authentic Czerny that hasn't been watered down.(I don't know why Amazon doesn't have a picture of it:it's certainly not rare or out of print.)

Only after finishing that should you go for the mother lode, the School of Velocity.

All of these Alfred editions are the best:carefully edited and handsomely presented.Palmer didn't simply run those old galleys again:everything's been recomposited and -- importantly for me -- the notes have been made larger where possible. At any rate, it's certainly more readable than that old yellow version everyone seems to own.

It is essential for students, Everyone should study Czerny's Studies. It has a good reviewing and the press is really black: you see everynote. The negative point is the book format, it should be spiral formatted, because it is almost impossible to leave this book opened and flat on the piano.

Step by Step Piano Course Book 2 (Bk/Cd Pack) (Willis) Review

Step by Step Piano Course Book 2 [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I learned the piano using this series and use it with my piano students.I think it is the best series out there for teaching sight-reading skills.

Occasionally I have students come to me who have learned out of another series of books like Bastien, and they are unable to sight-read music as well.

I think the trick to the Step-by-Step Method is that it teaches the piano similar to the way you learn to type when you take typing lessons -- you master one or two keys at a time and slowly add on one letter at a time.

David Carr Glover Method for Piano: Lessons, Primer" Review

David Carr Glover Method for Piano: Lessons, Primer' [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I grew up using David Carr Glover books when I took piano lessons myself.I still love them for the simplicity and ease of use.I like the way this method book does NOT start on the black keys.It starts right in with real notes in middle C position. This way the students learn the notes and what they look like on the staff.Other methods use the black keys and finger numbers--children end up relying on the finger numbers instead of on what NOTE they're supposed to be playing.
I highly recommend the Glover method--I would also recommend if you use this book to add the Primer level Technic, Performance and Theory books for a well-rounded experience.
