I use this book to teach my students, ages 5-11 how to play piano from the most basic level. It has been wonderful. Not only are the songs fun to play, but a lot of them are tunes that the kids know, which makes it more fun for them.It also incorporates the theory in with the playing, so my students never get too bored!I highly recommend these books to any piano teacher looking for a good book to start their students on!

I had this book 25 years ago. Now I am teaching piano and this theory lesson book is still the same; which is great! So glad to see it still has removable pages for easy lesson work. Highly recommend and would buy this item again.

Piano Lessons Book 1 - Book/CD Pack: Hal Leonard Student Piano Library Review

Piano Lessons Book 1 - Book/CD Pack: Hal Leonard Student Piano Library [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is excellent. It inrtoduces one concept at a time and allows for mastery before moving on.My son is 7 and he really likes it.We tried Usborne Piano, and it was needlessly confusing, combining several concepts in a single lesson; for instance, learning where notes are on the staff, but using half and quarter notes in the sample piece.Half and quarter notes look different, and this added confusion in determining which note went where on the staff. The reviewer who states that this book, Hal Leonard, only uses pictures, not 'real music' with notes on a staff, must not have progressed very far into the book. The book begins by just showing notes rising, 'Climbing Up' is the song, then falling, 'Climbing Down', so that the beginning student understands when the notes pictured are going up, and that correspondingly, you will play the notes in a rising pitch; and vice versa. As such, concepts are gently introduced, and after several lessons, very slowly, the student begins to learn the notes on the staff. There are many concepts to understand about playing piano, and reading music is only one of them.Eventually, many lessons into the book, the student is reading music with notes on a staff. This book proceeds in the same fashion as professional piano teachers that I have observed. The beginning student is not overwhelmed, as my son felt using the Usborne book, which moves too quickly and mixes several concepts into one lesson, which led to frustration, something you want to avoid when introducing your child to music! Playing the piano is complicated; there are many concepts to be understood, and it is essential that these concepts be set out simply, and one at a time, allowing for mastery before moving on.Hal Leonard does this.It comes with an excellent CD of accompaniment, each song twice, once at practice speed with an orchestra and featuring a piano for the student to play along with, then another up to tempo with just the orchestra for when the student has mastered the song. The CD is a great feature.Lastly, I read a great piece of advice on the internet:that students learn much easier when they hear the pieces they are to play over and over before attempting them; when they know it by ear.I tried this several lessons into the book, and it made a world of difference. As part of his lesson he sits and watches me play the pieces he's learning, and several pieces ahead, to familiarize him with them. This worked wonders. He was able to do new lessons much easier and faster when he knew how they were supposed to sound. It was easy for me to do, because the book is easy; I don't play the piano myself.

Product Description:
From the very first lessons in Book 1, students are making music as they explore the piano keyboard through fun improvisation pieces called My Own Song. The beginning of the book introduces finger numbers, the black-key and white-key groups, and basic rhythm patterns.Directional reading is taught first by finger number, then by note name, and then by interval (stop, skip, and repeat). Once the students are introduced to the staff, they learn reading guides Bass F and Treble G and read by interval in several different hand positions. This package includes a Piano Lessons Book and CD featuring wonderful tracks to accompany the student during practice or performance.

I used the older version of this book when I was a child and it was excellent.Easy to read and understand.Perfect for learning to play the piano if you want to go at your own pace.I had a private instructor as well but the book was the key to my lessons. I have almost the entire collection but they are a bit out-dated so I plan to buy the new ones soon for my own review, and also so I can teach my kids to play when they are old enough. I loved the John W. Schaum series.Note: These books aren't really theory based so if you intend to teach yourself, you'll also need a book to really teach you the basics (Tip: I used the AB Guide to music theory by Eric Taylor, it's alittle difficult to find now though), once you master the theory, you'll be on your way to playing tons of songs. Fun fun fun!!!

This is pretty good for making a game out of piano theory (which I remember as being horribly boring in my childhood). The characters and games would only appeal to a young audience, probably no more than 8 years old or so.

I was very disappointed in this book.It includes many popular songs, but excludes many many more.I was looking for a classic collection of children's songs (Home on the Range, O Susannah, On Top of Old Smokey, There's a Hole in my Bucket, Down in the Valley) none of which are included. The binding is adequate, the lyric book is flimsy.

My First Book of Hymns and Spirituals: 26 Favorite Songs in Easy Piano Arrangements Review

My First Book of Hymns and Spirituals: 26 Favorite Songs in Easy Piano Arrangements [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Bergerac's piano book entitled MY FIRST BOOK OF CLASSICAL MUSIC is excellent and despite the little kids pictured on the cover can be played without embarrassment by adults learning or relearning the piano.Unfortunately Bergerac's MY FIRST BOOK OF HYMNS AND SPIRITUALS is not of that quality. The music is easier and seems more juvenile than the "classical music" volume of the series perhaps partly because of the many pictures (which could be colored in by a child or anyone so inclined) that are used.Lyrics for the first verse of each song are included and "A Mighty Fortress Is Our God" has two verses with words in this edition. The songs are all familiar but so simplified they are not that enjoyable to hear or play. There is one sentence of background information for some of the songs which is somewhat helpful but more content would have been nice. This isn't a terrible collection but it could have been so much better.

Music Tree Time to Begin Activities (Frances Clark Library for Piano Students) Review

Music Tree Time to Begin Activities [Paperback]

My daughter's piano teacher recommended this as a beginner's course for small children (my daughter's 5), since it has child friendly language with illustrations to make concepts clear and at the same time teaches the basic concepts well. The price is not that great however, hence not 5 stars. This goes with the other piano book in the 'Time to Begin" so buying both hurt the purse a bit.

Here are the 20 songs in the book:
Angels We Have Heard on High; Jingle Bells; Away in a Manger; Joy to the World; Silent Night; Deck the Halls; O, Come All Ye Faithful; Song of the Birds; The Coventry Carol; O Come, O Come, Emmanuel; We Three Kings of Orient Are; The First Nowell; O Little Town of Bethlehem; What Child is This?; Hark! The Herald Angels Sing; O Christmas Tree; We Wish You a Merry Christmas; God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen; Pat-a-pan; Shepherds, O Shepherds.
There are illustrations throughout the book for children to color, and all-in-all it's not bad for the price. I do wish, however, that all the verses of the songs could have been included (only the first verse is given) so that you wouldn't have to buy a Christmas songbook separately or hunt down verses on the Internet.

Average Reviews:

I am an adult beginner and I'm teaching myself. This book has fun and easy arrangements to songs that you may already know the melody to.It's good for the adult beginner that is ready for their second book after getting down the basics. You should know how to read the notes (at least figure them out) in the bass and treble clef. It's a good book because you can probably play these songs right away, and you'll feel like you're really playing something, that otherwise would take years and years to accomplish. It's much better that playing kiddie songs. It has easy, short, two-hand abbreviated arrangements of classic's such as Nocturne by Chopin; Minuet by Bach; Ode to Joy by Beethovan; Minuet in G by Beethovan; Hungarian Dance by Brahms; Rondo in C by Clementi; From The New World by Dvorak; Sarabande by Handel; Sonta in C by Haydn; Suprise Symphony by Haydn and others.
