I Want to Take You Higher: The Life and Times of Sly and the Family Stone (Book) Review

I Want to Take You Higher: The Life and Times of Sly and the Family Stone [Hardcover]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Given the impact Sly Stone had on pop music in the 1960s and after, it's amazing more books haven't been written on the life and times of America's first master of funk. Jeff Kaliss takes a comprehensive look at the man - and the group - that gave us 'Stand,' 'Hot Fun in the Summertime,' 'Everyday People,' 'Thank You (Falettineme Be Mice Elf Agin' and other pop classics. Kaliss has done a marvelous job of researching his subject and I WANT TO TAKE YOU HIGHER is a must-read for all Sly Stone/Sixties rock music fans.

No Sixties group could touch Sly and the Family Stone for catchy, infectious songs that jumped off the vinyl and got their listeners up and shaking their tailfeathers. Yet Sly's songs weren't just empty-headed dance tunes for, wrapped up in those funky beats, were sincere, heartfelt calls for brotherhood and understanding. Tragically, the joy and magic and fun generated by the Family Stone's creation and initial success fell victim to drugs. Original group members left and Sly launched into a roller-coaster, drug-fueled ride that turned this tremendous talent into a reclusive Howard Hughes clone.

I WANT TO TAKE YOU HIGHER is a fairly slim volume - only 210 pages long - but Kaliss' in-depth research, which included interviews with original group members and even the man himself(!) produced an insightful, informative tale. While Kaliss doesn't shy away from warts-and-all exposure, his tone is even-handed and sympathetic.

The book's emphasis is on Sly and Company. After all, its sub-title is 'The Life and Times of Sly and the Family Stone.' So, while Kaliss discusses the group's musical output, he doesn't devote a great deal of space to that. Personally I would have liked a bit more on the music. And I would have loved it if Kaliss had dropped his laidback sensibilities and thrown in a "This song is Bitchin!!!!!" comment or two when discussing the songs!

Reading I WANT TO TAKE YOU HIGHER leaves one with mixed emotions. The music of Sly and the Family Stone touched so many people then and now, it's sad to read of the behind-the-scene turmoil and the toll drugs took on the man and his friends. They certainly took us higher for a time and, for that, we can be grateful. And grateful to for Jeff Kaliss' wonderful book. Highly recommended.

I used the older version of this book when I was a child and it was excellent.Easy to read and understand.Perfect for learning to play the piano if you want to go at your own pace.I had a private instructor as well but the book was the key to my lessons. I have almost the entire collection but they are a bit out-dated so I plan to buy the new ones soon for my own review, and also so I can teach my kids to play when they are old enough. I loved the John W. Schaum series.Note: These books aren't really theory based so if you intend to teach yourself, you'll also need a book to really teach you the basics (Tip: I used the AB Guide to music theory by Eric Taylor, it's alittle difficult to find now though), once you master the theory, you'll be on your way to playing tons of songs. Fun fun fun!!!

Carly Simon - Greatest Hits: E-Z Play Today Volume 221 [Paperback]

The description of this book was highly misleading."Large and easy arrangements" in the context of a book for piano, organ, and keyboard implies something beyond melody lines and named chords.

I got this for my daughter who is finishing her first year of piano lessons. But the book has only melody lines, chord names, and lyrics with no harmony at all -- no bass or anything, just single notes on a single staff blown up so the names of the notes appear within them.

Boomers with failing eyesight might find it an OK collection of hits for easy guitar since it is large print. But do NOT buy this for piano.

Early Rock 'N' Roll Era Fake Book [Plastic Comb]

Amazing, Fantastic, Unbelievable - JUST PLAIN FUN.I am a retired Air Force musician and enjoying my retirement years by playing music for my church, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and senior get togethers. Now since I don't think I will be playing 50s and 60s music for church, the response by the other groups has been nothing by just super. It is so great to see toes tapping or fingers moving in time with the music, and then the occasional getting up and doing some dancing that probably hasn't been done in a very long time.I have close to 50 play along books.Early Rock 'N' Roll Era Fake Book, without a doubt or a moments hesitation is absolutely the most popular of all books that probably cover well over 800 tunes.I am having more fun than I ever expected when I "retired."Many thanks to those that put this book together.

Classic Rock Fake Book - 2nd Edition Review

Classic Rock Fake Book - 2nd Edition [Plastic Comb]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fake Books have just the melody/lyric line (staff); piano players will only have their right hand busy; the left "fakes" it. And there's no tabs and songs are in their actual keys, so you need to read music. But if you do and either are good at theory or play a non-chording instrument, they're fantastic.

This book has a very impressive selection of songs, but "Classic Rock" doesn't describe it.More like "SuperHits of the 70s and 80s".There's some rock, some pop, some glam, a pretty wide variety of stuff people will likely request or that you might enjoy playing, but it's not all "rock" and certainly not "classic rock" - it's got songs from Heart, Bon Jovi and Jefferson Starship, fer cryin' out loud!Very playable stuff.

I enjoy this book a lot.I also enjoy the Disney Fake Book and the Ultimate Fake Book; there's not much overlap between them. The breadth of styles (again, it's not all classic rock) is a nice touch, and most of the songs were really big hits at one time. There are some omissions and excesses. No Dire Straits, but 22 Beatles songs.Six Elton John, but no Candle/Funeral for a Friend? No Led Zeppelin but FOUR Lennon/Ono (and one Lennon solo) songs? But on average it's a great collection.

Solo Jazz Piano: The Linear Approach (Berklee Guide) Review

Solo Jazz Piano: The Linear Approach [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a serious amateur jazz pianist who has long noticed that most other jazz piano books--including Mark's Levine's excellent "Jazz Piano Book"--assume you're always playing in a trio or larger ensemble.Consequently, they say very little about the unique problems of solo playing, bass lines, etc. This very well written and organized book contains the best instructional foundation for playing solo jazz piano I've seen anywhere.I had been looking for a book like this for about a decade without success because it was published relatively recently.

After several years of study from Levine's book and others in conjunction with occasional lessons from a couple of good teachers, I decided to study almost exclusively from this book on my own for awhile about a year ago.My solo playing has definitely improved a lot, and studying bass lines in depth seems to have improved my musical ear somehow, making it easier to improvise strong lines in the right hand.

Each chapter of "Solo Jazz Piano" begins with a clear, succinct presentation of the theory that will be drilled throughout the remainder of that chapter. This is generally followed by an etude written out in full (both clefs) that allows the student to feel what it's like to apply the theory immediately.I've learned a lot by analyzing the author's etudes. The etude is then followed by a leadsheet (usually with chord changes the same as or similar to those of the etude). The student is then directed to create an arrangement using the newly learned theory (and techniques learned in prior chapters) to create an original arrangement of the leadsheet. This system is very effective and helps the concepts "stick" in the student's mind, in my opinion. The first part of the book also includes an excellent review of basic chord theory.Once the study of bass lines begins, the author does not abandon the study and use of chords. On the contrary, he reminds the student to play 'comping arrangements in which the left hand plays a bass line and the right hand plays well-voice-led 'comping chords in addition to the usual excercises in which the student plays the melody (with or without added voices in the right hand) and a left-hand bass line. This ensures a well-rounded approach. My only criticism of this book is that it should have been spiral bound like Mark Levine's "Jazz Theory Book" for easier use at the piano.

I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone desiring to learn how to play SOLO jazz piano. For those just beginning to learn jazz improvisation, I also recommend "The Joy of Improv" (two volumes) by Dave Frank and "How to Improvise" by Hal Crook. Both Dave and Hal have also been faculty at Berklee College of Music.

Product Description:
A step-by-step approach to solo jazz improvisation for piano. Learn to improvise using the techniques pioneered by piano greats Lenny Tristano and Dave McKenna. This methodical approach to learning the art of solo jazz piano improvisation will free your creative sense of music. It begins with a review of chord symbol interpretation, walks through bass line development, and ends with how to play several melodic lines simultaneously in stimulating musical conversation. You'll learn how to develop solos that embellish and support the melody, and use lead sheets to help you generate your own musical ideas. Twenty-one lessons present techniques, practice exercises, and tunes based on jazz standards. Notated transcriptions of sample improvisations illustrate each lesson's technique, and the accompanying CD lets you hear a master improviser put these ideas to work.

This book is wonderful to begin teaching young children the rudiments of piano playing. The children are most excited when they have to play their parts while I play the accompaniment. These 'duet' sessions have generated much joy, laughter and fun, which is what music should be to children.

If your child requires more challenging work, I would suggest using this book in tandem with another book like from Michael Aaron's series or John Thompson's "Teaching Little Fingers to Play".

I've been a Tori Amos fan ever since I was eleven and always wanted to be able to play her music, but her being the excellent musician she is, it was difficult for me to play out of her existing music books. The music isn't really easy, but it is manageable for all the fans with less musical expertise than she has, which is probobly the vast majority.I'm really glad she came out with this, because even more so than most musicians, her music needs to be simplified (but not dumbed down) for all her fans to play.
