(More customer reviews)Don't be put off by the other, tepid reviews on this page: this is a great collection.Or I should say, this is half of a great collection.The thing is, you need volume one--the Hal Leonard "Ultimate Jazz Fakebook"--to go with it.
If you have them both, you have probably every jazz standard--and then some--that I've ever heard on a record--plus many tunes I have yet to hear anyone play.
The way I see it, "Ultimate" has more of the most commonly played songs, while "Real" has the great ones that got left out of the earlier collection, plus a lot of newer stuff.
A look at the compser index for "Real" shows a general trend: Lots of Desmond, Coltrane, and Herbie Hancock tunes are in the later book, while most of the Cole Porter and Gershwin stuff in in the earlier book.(Ellington's best known stuff is here, too, about half in the "Ultimate" book and half in the "Real" book.) There is NO duplication between the books.
I do my Band-In-A-Box work outs with the chords, and they are just fine, for the most part. I've caught a few errors--no big deal in a collection this vast.I find half of what I play tends to be from the grery volmem, and half from the black.

The Greatest Rock Guitar Fake Book Review

(More customer reviews)Excellent for Lyrics and riffs but thats it. Has some cool stuff but doesn't include all parts of the songs. I guess thats why they call it a fake book. Contains very few solos if any and some of the rhythms are illustrated by a chord diagram. The guitar white pages is the book I would recommend to people who want to learn entire songs rather than pieces. Overall I will rate this book as a 3.5 becasue it does have a wealth of music information. I would definitely recommend this book for lyricists.

The Real Book: Sixth Edition Review

Like many musicians I have owned a copy of the, "Real Book 5th Edition" for a long time.I use it at rehearsals, I take it to gigs, and over years of use it has received a lot a wear and tear.As you may know the, "Real Book 5th Edition" is a home made publication, it is not available to the general public it is sold by musicians to musicians.Consequently finding a copy is very difficult, and replacing a worn out copy is just as difficult.Despite its limited availability it is used by musicians all over the world and has become a standard piece of equipment any jazz gig.

Hal-Leonard's "Real Book 6th Edition", at first glance, appears to a fully licensed duplicate of the, "Real Book 5th Edition" however, it is NOT.

The cover is the same, the type set is the same, many of the songs are the same, and most of the keys match the, "Real Book 5th Edition."Unfortunately, many important songs are missing including: "Gentle Rain", "Pennsativa", "Green Dolphin St.", "Days of Wine & Roses", "Spain", "A Foggy Day", and all frank Zappa songs.Some great songs have been added including: "Whispering", "Nuage", "Topsy", "That's Amore", "Easter Parade", "When You Wish Upon a Star", and many more.A few songs appear in a different key than the, "5th Edition" including: "Windows" and "Here's That Rainy Day."There are also some corrections including: "Blue Train" changed from Cm blues to Eb blues; "Equinox" changed from Cm to C#m; the chords to "Four" have been 'corrected'; the bass lines of "So What" and "Maiden" have also been corrected.

The result of Hal-Leonard's efforts gives us a great fake book which is easy to read and easy to buy.The song selection is great, but it is different form the, "5th Edition" this will present a problem when someone on a gig calls, "Conference of the Birds" or any other song not in this book.

What made the, "Real Book 5th Edition" a standard for so many years was the fact that it was one of a kind.Each song had it's own page, the type set was large and clear, the chords were simple and to the point, the songs listed were ones that musicians played, and the arrangements were streamlined (but accurate), for years this was the only book that used this style.

Today, however, many fake books published by Warner Brother, Sher Music, and Hal-Leonard use this style.Consequently great music and quality arrangements are easily accessible to all musicians.There is no longer a need for the, "Real Book 5th Edition" it has been replaced by fully legal and more accurate publications.Hal-Leonard's, "Real Book 6th Edition" is another one of the new generation fake books.

I hope all the songs missing from the, "Sixth Edition" appear in books 2 or 3 which are due out soon.

If you want to put it in front of you at the keyboard to play and sing, the print is too small to use. If you are going to use a fake book, buy the bigger version of this same book. If I had it to do over again I would not purchase this book.

one point though, it's mainly the tv-tunes from the past. It would have been great if there were some 'new' tunes in it.

This whole book is fine print.If your visual acuity is not comparable to that of our feathered friends or rated at 20/10 or better you will need two assistants.One to hold the magnifying glass and another to hold the tightly bound book open. It would be fine for regular reading but NOT sheet music!!! I would have gladly paid the extra bucks to have the material printed in a reasonably sized format such as 8 x ll with a spiral binding. I would give it NO stars and three black holes in this regard.It got 2 stars because the selections and arrangements are good. ...

The Real Vocal Book - Volume 2: High Voice (Fake Book) Review

(More customer reviews)Volume 2 of the Real Vocal Book makes easily available the lyrics, melody line, and chords for more than half of the tunes included in the (instrumental) Real Book Volume 3. Selections include You Can Depend on Me, What a Difference a Day Made, Lollipops and Roses, A Dreamers Holiday--lots of classics.

The book is easy on the eyes with notes, chords and lyrics large enough to see from a distance. Once you get used to it, the notation here is in my opinion the very best for jazz. Abbreviating "C minor 7th" as "C-7," for instance, makes for easy sight reading.

The chord choices here are almost always good, though some songs have chord substitutions I'm not happy with (e.g, Where or When).

The "Volume II" book title and the yellow cover color is a potential source of confusion. Note that the Volume 2 Vocal Real Book contains songs from the Volume 3 "instrumental" Real Book (gray or blue covered in the C, B flat, and E flat editions) *not* from the yellow-covered Volume 2 instrumental Real Book.

Scat! Vocal Improvisation Techniques Review

(More customer reviews)Enjoyable yet slow down a little, Mr. Stoloff!Stoloff goes into a a brief history of how the scat style came about and then dives straight into jazz theory without giving well understood reasons on how it applies to his scat examples(e.g. Some Theory and then many examples, some more theory and then more examples.) The theory that's introduced with each chapter appears very academic and dry at times.Perhaps this is understood with Stoloff's educational background.However, I wish Stoloff would have kept in mind that the majority of singers out there who wish to delve into this subgenre of vocalization are not necessarilly theory-based and the text could have been adjusted accordingly.I would have liked the author to cover more of his personal philosophy and approach to vocal improvisation beyond the "just do what I've written and you'll be fine" mentality.
The big benefit and treasure of this book is the accompanying CD though.However, I do have two complaints: 1) it still purveys the "I'll do it and you copy me" approach and you just hope somewhere down the line, everything will come together 2) some of example melody lines he's flying by in lightning speed(I had to get a wave editor to slow down some of his jazz runs).The benefits: This CD is indeed great for loosening up your vocal chords, lips, nervousness and perhaps just to loosen up your entire 'soul' before a gig.I've been working with this book/CD for over six months now and have noticed a more relaxed approach to my melody lines in practice or performances after warming up with the CD examples.

The last part of the book covers vocal drumming for the Bobby McFerrin/ rap beat boxer types. He does an impressive job with the examples but it was only amusing at best.I feel that it takes a little too much real estate in the book and CD though.Again, I felt that he doesn't properly explain how this section connects with the rest of the material.
Overall, I am thankful that I ran into this book though for the sake of finding something to counter balance the regimen of scales and typical vocal exercises.I do know that I am a more confident improviser and not afraid to stretch out the melodies because of Stoloff's material. Recommended but be creative how you practice the material!

(More customer reviews)No "fake book", or "real book" this.You get full, well-thought-out harmonizations.This isn't how Jazz pianists acquire their numbers, but hey, this graduate of the weekly visit to the traditional read-the-music-and-play-it-exactly-as-written piano teacher likes it just fine this way.Having played through about 25% of the songs, I'll say there are no really bad arrangements, and quite a few very good ones.The technical difficulty is toward the higher end of the non-classical stuff you find in the music stores -- the average song is about as hard (if you want to play all the notes) as a Chopin Waltz or a Clementi Sonatina.

(More customer reviews)Amazing, Fantastic, Unbelievable - JUST PLAIN FUN.I am a retired Air Force musician and enjoying my retirement years by playing music for my church, nursing homes, assisted living facilities and senior get togethers.Now since I don't think I will be playing 50s and 60s music for church, the response by the other groups has been nothing by just super.It is so great to see toes tapping or fingers moving in time with the music, and then the occasional getting up and doing some dancing that probably hasn't been done in a very long time.I have close to 50 play along books.Early Rock 'N' Roll Era Fake Book, without a doubt or a moments hesitation is absolutely the most popular of all books that probably cover well over 800 tunes.I am having more fun than I ever expected when I "retired."Many thanks to those that put this book together.

(More customer reviews)The "150 More of the Most Beautiful Songs Ever" is a fake book, which I was not aware of when I ordered the book, although I should have guessed since its a Hal Leonard book.A Fake book means there is no bass line, you have to make up your own bass line from the chord key indicators.Luckily, I have been learning how to do it.If I had known it was a fake book, I may not have ordered it.This should be explicit when advertising a music book.

The notes are large for easy reading, and the notes contain the letters of the notes, which makes it easy for older or young eyes and for new piano players.However, the lyrics are in smaller print, which makes it harder for vocals.

The songs are nice, just as I expected when ordering, since I had read the table of contents listed on the web page.

(More customer reviews)This "fake" book has songs transcribed in standard notation and tableture, making it easy to read and learn quickly.If you're a novice guitarist or just need to learn the general feel of a song in a hurry, this is a good book.Even a beginner can pick this one up and start making recognizable sounds in no time.However, if you want to learn the "right" way to play a song, I'd recommend a different book.This one serves its purpose by giving you the ability to play simplified versions of popular song by using power chords, simplified riffs, etc.A great book to use if you want to increase the number of songs in your play list in a short period of time.
