I have not finished reading this book yet, but from what I have read, I found this book to be very informative & enjoyable in its approach. Each chapter is short enough to make it easy to read, yet long enough to get its point across.Although I'm a member of a songwriter's group and have read other books on the subject & attended seminars, I've already learned new approaches to the craft of songwriting by studying this book.I believe that anyone, whether you're just starting out or you're a seasoned writer, will find this book useful in your ambitions of being a hit songwriter.

How To Write Songs On Guitar - Revised (Book) Review

How To Write Songs On Guitar - Revised [Paperback]

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however much it may be at variance with reality. Rooksby's entire series of books reminds me of nothing so much as my time studying composition at the Juilliard School. Their undergraduate theory course (Literature and Materials of Music) mirrors Rooksby's game plan and "secret wish" for us as evolving musicians. As opposed to those who somehow miss the point and say his method is just a bunch of chords or progressions, Rooksby's entire thesis is that music is NOT these surface features that he goes to great lengths to describe. To my mind, Rooksby's wish for us as his students is for us to "get to work" and to use these stock features (chords, progressions) as launching pads for our own analysis of music's mysterious and personal qualities. At Juilliard, we were not taught theory per se, but rather, we were given pieces of music to analyze (polyphonic and homophonic) to come into class to discuss. Nobody told us what the piece "meant" and nobody told us "how the story ends". We were trained to become independent thinkers, and make up our own minds. Again, whatever the naysayers may believe in their musical heart of hearts to the contrary, Rikky Rooksby is a master teacher who states very clearly that music is either all surface and recycled parts and pieces, OR, it is an endless mystery, literally having no end (as there are infinite harmonics in nature). He also states clearly that the game of music is not in the obviously repeated surface structures, but in the way that each individual musician can IMPRINT on music structures their own spirit and personality. John Lennon's barre chords were his and nobody elses, just as Beethoven's middle c was unlike any other musician's middle c (even though it was). With his encyclopedic foundation of structures leading to a workable process of personal analysis of the songs we love (Rikky's plan for us as his students), Rooksby's intent is not to dwell smugly on music's obvious lacks (7-12 notes in Western music, the limited range of human hearing, etc), but to ponder and muse upon the mystery of how those lacks can turn into so much genuine gold. "Just think", Rikky seems to be saying..."there are endless new songs waiting for us to write". Just think...endless new songs.

150 More of the Most Beautiful Songs Ever E-Z Play Today 278 Review

150 More of the Most Beautiful Songs Ever E-Z Play Today 278 [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The "150 More of the Most Beautiful Songs Ever" is a fake book, which I was not aware of when I ordered the book, although I should have guessed since its a Hal Leonard book.A Fake book means there is no bass line, you have to make up your own bass line from the chord key indicators.Luckily, I have been learning how to do it.If I had known it was a fake book, I may not have ordered it.This should be explicit when advertising a music book.

The notes are large for easy reading, and the notes contain the letters of the notes, which makes it easy for older or young eyes and for new piano players. However, the lyrics are in smaller print, which makes it harder for vocals.

The songs are nice, just as I expected when ordering, since I had read the table of contents listed on the web page.

Sixty Songs Review

Sixty Songs [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

Except for La Bonne Chanson and the later cycles, the bulk of Faure's excellent song output appeared in three collections of 20 songs each, published in both high- and medium-voice versions.100 years ago, in 1908, he published the third of those, and made final revisions to the first and second. This Dover edition reprints all 60 (medium-voice versions) together. It's especially useful because the E.B.Marks/Belwin reprints of the three volumes are hard to find (with so many publication & distribution changes over the years), and might not even be available anymore; and the Hamelle/Leduc (official) French editions are surely more expensive.Always be careful with Dover's reprints, which in general are of uneven quality as some come from inadequate or undesirable sources; but this volume is a good one.(A bit weak in visual quality, coming from old originals, but strong on authority and completeness.)

The Celtic Fake Book (Fake Books) C Edition Review

The Celtic Fake Book C Edition [Plastic Comb]
Average Reviews:

I just got this book and I can't believe how many songs there are. They are also listed by their nationality (Irish, Scottish, Welsh).I play a little guitar and I was looking for an Irish song book I could just play the chords with. This book has simple chord charts in the back and tells you which to play during the song.It doesn't give any type of strumming pattern, which would be helpful for me the beginner, it shows just the melody notations.Being in the SCA, it's nice to have so many traditional songs at my fingertips. It also DOES give a few instrumental pieces, the ubiquitous "Irish Washerwoman" being one of them.I would have liked to have seen a little bit about each song, although I know this is not a history book, but would have settled for a general time frame each song was created in.Other than that, a wonderful resource.

1000 Songwriting Ideas (Hal Leonard Music Pro Guides) Review

1000 Songwriting Ideas [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A lot of it is fluff/filler.

I counted the music theory-related songwriting ideas, and there are a total of 82 ideas. The other 918 ideas are "contemporary" ideas such as "What's the song that would go best with a ten-gallon hat?" and "Write a song about angels."

Ok, well... no.

I'm from the alternative school of thought, when it comes to songwriting. I grew up on the Smiths, The Cure, Depeche Mode, Dinosaur Jr., Pumpkins, etc (the 90s). Music with edge, with soul, with staying power (like certain stuff from the 60s and 70s-- Beatles, Nick Drake, and Sabbath).

What I dislike most are books from Nashville/contemporary songwriters, who write top 40 "hits" for pop artists (most of which go unheard for the most part).

I have nothing against Ms. Aschmann as a songwriter (I've never heard her music) but the ideas are just... fluffy. That's the best way I can describe it. Don't get me wrong, there ARE gems to be found inside this book, but they are few and far-between.

A lot of these ideas are lyric or story-related. I think Rikky Rooksby's book "Lyrics" is a better option if you're stuck for lyric or story ideas.

Oh, here's another problem I have with this book - a lot of her ideas aren't clearly explained. In one idea, she talks about a guitar tuning called "Taro Patch." I had to look it up on google and wikipedia to find out that it's simply an open-G tuning. Also, a lot of the songs she cites, I have never heard them, ever. Cheesy titles that seem like they're in the public domain, musically. I listen to A LOT of different music, from 40's jazz to metal and everything in between, and I just couldn't even bother to look up the songs she mentioned or what they sounded like.

I've said it before in several songwriting book reviews -- check out Rikky Rooksby's songwriting series, especially How To Write Songs On Guitar.

This is a great effort from Ms. Aschmann, but it just falls a bit short. In all honesty, I think this book of ideas would have been better suited for a website, free for all to read and utilize.

Jesus Christ Superstar: A Rock Opera (Vocal Selections) Review

Jesus Christ Superstar: A Rock Opera [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

The songs included in this book are Heaven on Their Minds, Everything's Alright, Hosanna, Pilate's Dream, Last Supper, Gethsemane, King Herod's Song, and Superstar.A few things should be noted:Firstly, Heaven on their Minds does not include the "all gone sour" last four verses that are used in live productions of jcs.Instead the song is written to fade away. That might present a problem to people performing or using that song for an audition. The last supper only includes the chorus that the apostles sing.Superstar is tuned to a C instead of the original E that is on all of the recordings and live productions.Other than that, all the other keys are the same as you might hear them on cd recordings, 1973 movie, and live productions.Chords are also included for guitar players.
