I just got this product today but am very pleased with it so far. I really like the video helps that are included. It helped me to learn the basics very quickly. There are some things that I have not learned yet, but I do not anticipate any difficulty in learning the more complex features either.

I was a Music Education major in college and have studied music theory and composition since I was 12 years old. I just wish there was a product like this when I was learning music theory and composition. It would have been a huge help to me. I highly recommend this product for those who need just a basic song writing software. Unless you need something to help with orchestration and really complex composition, this product should provide all you need to get your music written and printed in a professional format.

God Songs: How to Write & Select Songs for Worship (Integrity) Review

God Songs: How to Write & Select Songs for Worship [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There's a growing trend in contemporary Christian churches where the worship pastor(s) introduce original songs to their congregation. While not obligated to, many worship pastors have a creative side that bubbles up in their private worship and other times and for many there is a difficult bridge to cross to take their God-inspired and God-driven musical ideas and melodic prayers and put them in a form suitable for corporate worship; that's where God Songs comes in.

As a musician and worshiper who is not a worship pastor (but very interested in the subject), I feel the book does a good job of laying a foundation for the basics of what makes a good worship song and how a great worship song may differ from other forms of popular music and does (for the most part) a good job validating the ideas presented. It also has a chapter on music theory that focuses in on theory in relation to contemporary worship songs, I found this part of the book especially interesting. The stories behind some of todays most famous worship songs were also very good.

The book assumes you know how to play an instrument (piano or guitar) and you already know the basics of music theory; it assumes you're already a songwriter looking to expand your knowledge of worship songwriting.

If you want to hear these techniques applied, check out Paul Baloche's latest album A Greater Song. Paul is an worship pastor trainer, worship pastor and recording artist.

It goes on at length about analog recording technique which is nearly inapplicable to the beginning composer. Not recommended except as a minor resource for your library. The Songwriter's Workshop: Harmony (Berklee Press) Review

The Songwriter's Workshop: Harmony [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book, along with its companion by the same author, Songwriter's Workshop: Melody, comprise a solid, straightforward course in writing songs along the lines of what I'd (reluctantly) call "classic rock and pop" of the 60's through the 80's. The harmonic vocabulary covered in this volume is comparable to what most guitar-oriented songwriters
used then and continue to: open position chords with descending bass lines, major triads with thirds and fifths in the bass, etc. It may be a sign of the times at Berklee or, more
likely, just the author's orientation but you won't find jazz/show tune techniques here nor Steely Dan changes so if that's more your cup of joe, I'd recommend Jack Perricone's "Melody in Songwriting" which makes a great followup to this series.

But otherwise, there's little prior knowledge assumed (other than an interest in and listening experience to a wide range of songs) and much to be learned.

Kachulis's approach is to build up song structures by having you focus on individual elements: groove, chord color, modal chord progressions over small sections building to contrasts
over larger forms. Always refering to an example song or to the accompanying recording the approach is logical, and it should work for those requiring different levels of handholding and validation. You can imitate the examples closely or just
glean from the principles, going your own way.

And let's face it: Many of the points about song structure are just as applicable whether your composing German Lieder, folk ballads, cabaret torch songs or a neo-prog synth-drenched epic.

A Composer's World: Horizons and Limitations (Schott) Review

A Composer's World: Horizons and Limitations [Hardcover]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The literary style is a bit dry but the rhetoric and ideas are a solid read. Hindemith opens with a philosophical discussion of the nature of hearing and performing music and lays down the poles of Western thought between Boethius and Augustine, that music is considered to have moral force to shape the mind or that the mind imposes order on sound to create the mental impression of music. He tries to avoid being dogmatic about either and proceeds to an explanation of musical memory and emotional association.
Where he gets a bit cranky is explaining the American musical education establishment and the bad habits of performers. He's also very unforgiving to popular music and music made in totalitarian states (e.g. Shostakovich and music written for fascist regimes). But his comments about the shortcomings of American musical education are salient today and his critique of mass-marketing of music is also still relevant.

The Songs of John Lennon: The Beatle Years Review

The Songs of John Lennon: The Beatle Years [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Songwriting, much like painting, sculpting and dancing, is an art form. The ability to construct a series of repetitve phrases, set against a (typically) diatonic tune, one which hopefully sticks in your brain, long enough to force you to buy a CD of something you heard only once is not only art - it's simply magic...

And in John Stevens' "The Songs of John Lennon", the magician's secrets are revealed...

Throughout the course of this book, we're not only given some very interesting and detailed history about the song(s) in question (as well as recording and release information) but all this, together with comprehensive and brilliantly detailed descriptions relating to Lennon's song Structure, Phrasing and 'Prosody' (ie, versification/metrical structure).

Now, if these terms are a bit scary to you, fear not -- as Stevens carefully outlines the basic terminology and is consistent with his usage throughout.Whether you're in the garage band, a professional songwriter, or a student looking for some answers about how great pop songs are constructed, this book serves not only as a reference guide, but almost as a 'Songwriting Cookbook', full of great, original recipes...and as Stevens reveals, just like in cooking, the essence of a great song still requires you to 'salt to taste'.This was often Lennon's game, as a few simple twists here and there (either melodically or lyrically) often changed the entire feel of a particular song, delivering the critical element to make it a hit.

Quite simply, this book is unlike any other. And for the musicians, songwriters, and even music lovers out there who've ever wondered, "How did he do it?", you'd be hard-pressed to find another piece of prose that is more poetic and lyrical than this.

So, if you can't make it to Boston to take Stevens' Lennon class (he's a professor @ Berklee College of Music), don't fret...(no pun intended)."The Songs of John Lennon" just might be the most valuable 4-year college course you've ever taken - and you don't even have to live in the dorm!

All you need is love?Indeed...and *this* book.

Product Description:
An essential guide for all songwriters and Beatles fans, this book explores John Lennon's songwriting genius with a guided tour through 25 of his Beatles-era hits. Author John Stevens explains Lennon's intuitive talent from a technical point of view, through the lens of songwriting's three basic elements: melody, harmony and lyric. He shows how Lennon fashioned songs that were at once politically and socially relevant during the '60s, yet remain ageless and timeless today. Features in-depth musical analysis of: A Hard Day's Night * Ticket to Ride * Norwegian Wood * Strawberry Fields Forever * Come Together * and more.John Stevens is a songwriting professor at Berklee College of Music. For more than 20 years, he has taught "The Music of John Lennon," one of the most popular courses in the Berklee curriculum."You've got the Beatles' records and the John Lennon records; now with this book, you can have the Owner's Manual. How To Write Songs On Guitar - Revised (Book) Review

How To Write Songs On Guitar - Revised [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Everyone is entitled to their opinion, however much it may be at variance with reality. Rooksby's entire series of books reminds me of nothing so much as my time studying composition at the Juilliard School. Their undergraduate theory course (Literature and Materials of Music) mirrors Rooksby's game plan and "secret wish" for us as evolving musicians. As opposed to those who somehow miss the point and say his method is just a bunch of chords or progressions, Rooksby's entire thesis is that music is NOT these surface features that he goes to great lengths to describe. To my mind, Rooksby's wish for us as his students is for us to "get to work" and to use these stock features (chords, progressions) as launching pads for our own analysis of music's mysterious and personal qualities. At Juilliard, we were not taught theory per se, but rather, we were given pieces of music to analyze (polyphonic and homophonic) to come into class to discuss. Nobody told us what the piece "meant" and nobody told us "how the story ends". We were trained to become independent thinkers, and make up our own minds. Again, whatever the naysayers may believe in their musical heart of hearts to the contrary, Rikky Rooksby is a master teacher who states very clearly that music is either all surface and recycled parts and pieces, OR, it is an endless mystery, literally having no end (as there are infinite harmonics in nature). He also states clearly that the game of music is not in the obviously repeated surface structures, but in the way that each individual musician can IMPRINT on music structures their own spirit and personality. John Lennon's barre chords were his and nobody elses, just as Beethoven's middle c was unlike any other musician's middle c (even though it was). With his encyclopedic foundation of structures leading to a workable process of personal analysis of the songs we love (Rikky's plan for us as his students), Rooksby's intent is not to dwell smugly on music's obvious lacks (7-12 notes in Western music, the limited range of human hearing, etc), but to ponder and muse upon the mystery of how those lacks can turn into so much genuine gold. "Just think", Rikky seems to be saying..."there are endless new songs waiting for us to write". Just think...endless new songs.

Songwriting: A Complete Guide to the Craft Review

Songwriting: A Complete Guide to the Craft [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a very engaging book, and is very enjoyable to read, though it definitely shows its age--the examples only run up through the early to mid 80s. If you are looking for all the latest information about currentstyles, this isn't your book.
Having said that, this is an extremelyinteresting book that has its roots primarily in classic Broadway musicals, and the kind of timeless songwriting that created standards that havelasted for generations (though other genres, from blues to country to rock, are also covered).
There's a lot of discussion of lyrics, rhyme schemes, various themes for songs, and the different structural parts of a song, butnot as much discussion of writing a song line-by-line as Sheila Davis'sexcellent book on lyric writing.
There's also what seems to me to be anextremely thorough section on melodies, chords, harmonies, and common chordprogressions. He discusses ways to fix up a stock melody, and evendiscusses when to use different intervals, and what they accomplish. Ican't compare this with Jai Josefs's book--which I have heard good thingsabout--because that is out of print as of this writing, and I haven't beenable to locate a copy yet.
If you are just looking for a template to useto create songs that sound like what's on the radio, this book isn't yourbest choice. But if you want a broader background which you can then adaptyourself to styles that interest you, this is an excellent book to have.
