(More customer reviews)This is the book I started with and I'm very glad I did! Noad is probably the most accessible guitar method author around. I'm self-taught and believe me there are many ways you can go wrong by being your own teacher. If you like the dummies genre of computer books you'll love this method. He doesn't assume you know anything to start with or try to impress with his advanced mastery. But he does have an intimate knowledge of what a beginner needs to know and how to impart that knowledge. His books one and two are an excellent example of what separates a great guitarist and teacher from just a great guitarist. But you need to read and re-read the text very carefully. There are subtle points, which if glossed over will cause untold pain and cursing later on. But it's all right there in the book. If you heed his advice and study twice as carefully as if you had an instructor who could catch those mistakes then you'll be ok!

All these guitar methods (including this one) have one glaring deficiency: Lack of enough and varied practice material. Maybe I'm a little dense but classical guitar is not easy. It takes time and a LOT of practice! One can only repeat the same few lines of notation so many times without getting bored to tears. So I solved the problem by getting just about every method book known to man. After the first couple of books it starts to flow and become fun! Each book goes over the same concepts in a little different way with of course different practice pieces. The flaws of one book are cancelled by another and it becomes exciting as you move faster and faster through each text. What was once arduous becomes smooth and pleasant! The Carcassi book is great once you are a little more adept. It's purportedly for beginners but is rather dry and pedantic and a tough slog if you're just starting. There's some great stuff in there however if you already have the basics of notation down. I found it very useful for learning the higher positions. The Christopher Parkening books are great. He starts right out and then keeps going with very easy, pleasant sounding practice pieces, which helps keep your enthusiasm high. But like most others (unlike Noad) he leaves out small but crucial details that leave one scratching ones head or throwing projectiles. But if you've done Noad first you just say AH! I know what that is! Jason Waldron is also good and straight forward, easy to understand. (Although I wish he would come out with his second method book already!) He has a whole gaggle of songbooks (6) filled with familiar folk tunes, some classical and including CDs. They are very pleasant, easy, confidence building practice pieces. But I prefer Baroque. Noad does a very excellent book of Baroque pieces. He also has a Renaissance book with some very pretty tunes. What a joy to read and play such beautiful music from hundreds of years ago! It's definitely worth the work!

Now, to end on a bit of a heretical note. I had to teach myself because I really don't like the sound of nylon strings on the classical guitar! I wanted to play baroque music on an electric or steel string acoustic guitar. Just like each person plays every piece a little differently and with his or her own interpretation, I wanted to be able to shape my own personal sound with electronics. Besides, I just like the sound of steel! So, I use a flat pick to replace the thumb and steel finger picks on the last three fingers. As an added bonus you don't have to fuss with all that fingernail growing, filing business! I like it and it works pretty well although I still haven't quite figured out how to do harmonics... but I'm working on it! Who knows, you might want to try it also? So, I hope you come to enjoy the classical guitar as much as I do. Persevere through the initial pain and you will never be sorry you did!

Addendum: Since writing this review, I have gone back to the Classical Guitar for playing Classical music. A good Classical Guitar has such subtlety of expression and range of expressiveness that just can't be coaxed out of a steel instrument. My Martin acoustic now lives for chords, at which it is stellar! But I still use the flat pick/steel finger pick method. I can curl my fingers up and play chords and lead riffs or unfold them and fingerpick. It's very versatile and I still like it a lot. My electric is for gouging out acid rock riffs with a little Baroque sprinkled in. But the one which most often brings a tear to my eye is that Classical Guitar.

There are some things that I have not learned yet, but I do not anticipate any difficulty in learning the more complex features either.

I was a Music Education major in college and have studied music theory and composition since I was 12 years old. I just wish there was a product like this when I was learning music theory and composition. It would have been a huge help to me. I highly recommend this product for those who need just a basic song writing software. Unless you need something to help with orchestration and really complex composition, this product should provide all you need to get your music written and printed in a professional format.

Guide to Standardized Drumset Notation Review

Insufficiently Authoritative?? - that hurt! I have a DMA in percussion performance from Indiana University. I am the Director of Percussion Studies at the University of Arizona. I have a number of works published: over a dozen musical compositions, three books, and over 400 published articles. This book was the result of over two years of research for my DMA document. The entire document and rationale of why certain recommendations were made, was over 900 pages long. I honestly feel that my background and research makes me an authoritative figure on this topic. I started writing music calligraphy back in 1973, and have worked with computer-based notation since Professional Composer came out on the Mac in 1984.

These recommendations were not decided by some arbitrary means. The claim that these recommendations are contrary to standard practice is simply wrong. This book was created by making a very thorough analysis of the notation used in over 200 drumset examples, both using precise notation - such as actual transcriptions and drumset method books, and improvisatory notation - such as big band and studio drum charts. In addition, over 25 books on contemporary notational standards were analyzed in respect to drumset notation. The final recommendations were nothing more than an acceptance of what is currently being done the most. HOWEVER, some recommendations were made in order to help drumset notation work for a small 5-piece kit, or a kit the size of Terry Bozzio's!

"Theta" claims that some of the instructions are "absurd", but please keep in mind that requirements change depending on what the composer is trying to do. For a short example, having one cross-stick rimshot on the snare is an easy notational example - Theta suggests using an "X" on the snare space. That's fine, but what if you want to use that same technique on a tom tom? Using the "X" for that technique now means that it can easily be confused with the cymbal. Not a big problem if you've only using two cymbals, but what if your kit includes 8 toms and 8 cymbals. Then the book's recommended notation makes much more sense.

Concerning the statement that the "standardization" has yet to be implemented - I put forward the FACT that the book has been adopted by: The Percussive Arts Society and the PAS Publishers Committee, Hal Leonard Publishing, Alfred Publishing, Studio 4 Publishers, Meredith Music Publications, Modern Drummer Magazine, Drum! Magazine; as well as the Finale and Sibelius notation programs - to name just a few influential organizations. Hell, I wrote the section in the Sibelius manual for drumset notation. I was also a beta tester for Finale for over two years, working exclusively on their drumset notation capabilities.

To make a comment to Max Parish's suggestion to use "my own Guide", is exactly the reason why this research was done in the first place! So that everyone didn't create their own notation from scratch. The book also goes so much further than simply recommending the proper line or space for a particular instrument. The main purpose was.... Here's something that works for every type of musical situation, let's just all adopt it and we'll be much better off.

If you're looking for a book that HAS been and CONTINUES to be a standard for drumset notation, then this is the book. Check it out and you'll agree.

I own a lot of percussion reference books, but this is the one I always reach for first. It's hard to beat.

It is only 42 pages, and can be completed within 2 weeks with practice. Over all the book does what it is intended to do: teach you how to read music and play classical guitar the correct way so that you can play more complicated songs after you finish the book...It's cheap and pretty good, but make sure wherever you get it that it comes with the CD, because it is crucial in order to benefit from the book...Good luck.

(More customer reviews)If you are unfamiliar with Noad's "Solo Guitar Playing I", I would highly recommend that you start there first.Book II is an order of magnitude more difficult. The author does an excellent job of introducingyou to each new piece of music and pointing out problem sections that willneed extra practice or that have tricky fingering.When necessary he alsopresents exercises or patterns that help to exemplify a piece or that willbe used throughout a piece. Overall, the book is well written and thematerial is well presented.It does not "hold your hand" as muchas book one did and the music selections are quite a bit more challenging. I would recommend it only to the experienced guitarist or to those who havecompleted Book I. If you are able to make it through this book you willhave built a phenomenal classical repertoire.

Parkening Plays Bach: Guitar Solo (Guitar Collection) Review

(More customer reviews)I found Pakening's transcriptions to be wonderfully true to the original compositions. I especially enjoyed the transcription of BE THOU WITH ME (Aria: Bist Du bei mir BWV 508). Though some of the stretches are fairly difficult, the music is beautiful in nature. Reguarding the stretches, Parkening himself said "No compromise has been made in requirements of technique." I give this book five stars.

Finale 2010 Review

(More customer reviews)I've used Finale since 1995, producing hundreds of arrangements and compositions, engraving music for other composers and arrangers, and even creating a theory textbook.Generally speaking, Finale has been an excellent product, and I've never found anything that couldn't be notated using this program.However, recent updates have become less and less stable as the program has gotten more complex.Even with a new computer, Finale 2008 and 2009 were having trouble playing back large scores and would occasionally crash for no reason.Finale 2010 reorganizes many notational inputs and is much smoother graphically, but after a few months' use, I found a terrible problem:Finale 2010 would crash when I tried to open complex files created on earlier versions of of the program!That means I can't access some of my older work to make changes or even print out a new copy.After the crash, Finale 2010 wouldn't start again until I restarted the computer.

I contacted MakeMusic about this and sent them one of the files that wouldn't open.They agreed that Finale 2010 crashed when trying to open the file and acknowledged that the file still opens well in Finale 2008.Their advice was to identify all files with this problem, export them as XML files and import them into Finale 2010.The problem is that I have so many files (thousands!) that it would take weeks to attempt to open every single file, especially if the program keeps crashing and I have to restart the computer over and over.The other option was to keep older versions of Finale on the computer, but that would take up a lot of hard drive space and file managing could get problematic.So, at the moment, I'm considering downgrading to Finale 2009 and never updating again!

Since the Sibelius notation software has emerged as competition for Finale, my impression is that MakeMusic is releasing more and more "upgrades" that aren't thoroughly tested, and this issue is simply a deal-breaker.In concept, the program is still very good, and if you're just getting started, it's still the standard in notation software, but I cannot recommend this version of Finale to longtime users.

I have taken the time to compare the works in the books to their original counterparts and have found that they have simplified.In some cases I disagree with the revisions but in all, when played, they sound fine, and are relatively easy to complete. If you need it fast, like I did, then these transcriptions are easy enough and sound good enough to fool the average listener.

(More customer reviews)Segovia gleaned the most effective studies from Sor's extensive canon, compiling them into one album.Contrary to expectation, and common misconception, the album does not follow a graded progression; the album begins with Sor's polyphonic study Op. 6, No. 8, which corresponds to RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) 7.Admittedly, the first few studies following the first are not exceedingly difficult, but before you decide to shell-out your hard-earned cash, bear in mind that this album was never intended to be a beginner's introduction to Fernando Sor, as the easiest studies require an intermediate level of guitar proficiency roughly corresponding to RCM 5.

The studies are all eminently playable and exceptionally challenging.There's the finger killing study in barre, Op. 29, No. 13.The study in sixths, Op. 6, No. 9.The study in thirds, Op. 6, No. 6.Studies in arpeggios, legatos, chords, etc.All the most effective, and beautiful, studies written by Sor in one album.It's often stated, with good reason, that if you make it through this album unscathed, you can play anything.

Sight Reading for the Classical Guitar, Level I-III" Review

(More customer reviews)I ordered this book in the hopes that it would be useful not only for my students but for myself as well and it really does deliver.This text, Level I-III, assumes that the student has at least a basic knowledge of music theory but not so much that it's useless for beginners.It starts out with simple diatonic exercises on the first string, a great departure point and a common starting point for many generations of guitarists.

Just as it states on the cover, Benedict emphasizes dynamics, interpretation, phrasing and form almost right from the start.This wide scope permeates the lessons and lends a lightness and freshness to the lessons that keeps the student wanting more.The pacing of the exercises is carefully constructed and there are no big jumps in difficulty, which is great.Equally useful is his addition of random rhythm patterns at the end of each level.With all the emphasis on tone production, dynamics and interpretation, students (and teachers) often neglect their rhythmic mastery and with Benedict's inclusion of these random rhythms and his even-handed approach, one is sure to learn something no matter their experience level!

There haven't been many books that have made my list of instructional essentials but this book and the second volume have proven to be indispensible to myself and to many of my students.The fact that this book just happens to make you a better sight-reader in the mean time is a testament to its transparency and usability.Highly recommended.

Finale PrintMusic 2010 Review

It is quite intuitive and I was up and running very easily. The scanning works very well and the playback sounds are a very nice touch. I highly recommend if you are looking for pro results without a pro price-tag.

(More customer reviews)This is a collection of beginner-to- lower intermediate classical works for solo guitar.It has a wide selection of music from the 1500s through the 1900s.I recommend it.My only problem is with the binding - the glue binding on my copy broke after three days.With better construction this book would be highly recommended.

And that was my only objection to the book.The information was rudimentary and would make a good reference or workbook for a musician that is just starting out to learn orchestration and part writing.I have a four movement symphony under my belt so I was looking for something more advanced to use as a reference for those difficult scoring problems. Other than that one objection the book had plenty of information to learn and was easy to understand.
