Hymns Re-Harmonized - Keepsake Edition: Piano Solo (Sacred Folio) Review

(More customer reviews)This book has a wide selection of hymns, and they are placed in alphabetical order which makes it easy to locate a piece without consulting the table of contents.Each hymn includes an intro, the standard hymnal version (with the words for the first verse), an optional bridge leading into the final verse, and a reharmonized arrangement intended to accompany the final verse of the hymn.There is also a section at the end of the book with suggestions for transitioning keys between hymns.This book has multiple uses for a church pianist.The standard hymnal version of each hymn is useful because it is written in larger print than in a hymnal, and it's easier to read both clefs without having all that verse text in between them.The intros are also more interesting than just playing the last few measures as is commonly done.The bridge plus alternate harmonization can be used for preludes or short offertories, etc.They are nicely arranged with a rich sound.However, if you intend to use these alternate arrangements for accompanying the final verse as the book suggests, you will need to determine if your church group and/or song leader is sufficiently musical to follow along.My experience is that the congregation can get lost during the bridge or trying to sing along when the pianist is playing in a higher octave than they are singing.If you have a good music leader who knows ahead of time what you are going to play, they will be able to lead the rest.But for myself, I stick to using these alternate arrangements for the preludes.

(More customer reviews)I have always been "picky" about the arrangements of Christian hymns and worship songs, because I am a piano arranger myself.This book has THREE things going for it!
1. these are classy, beautifully done arrangements and not disjointed
2. Mark Hayes has just a "hint" of jazz chording which adds to the appeal of these arrangements
3. this particular book is actually three books in one, so you get a terrific bargain!
I use this book with some of my students, as well as for church offertories.This book is at least upper-intermediate to advanced level.I love how he weaves in some classic hymns with newer worship choruses from the last two decades.You will not be disappointed if you purchase this book.

Fingerpicking Praise (Guitar Solo) Review

(More customer reviews)Many books marketed to guitarists - especially Christian music - claim to be "arranged for guitar" and turn out to be just lead sheets with chords, also known as a "fake book," not really arranged for any particular instrument.This book is a shining exception.The book is truly arranged for guitar.The arrangments are at once sonically tasteful and very playable.The notation is generously suplemented by realistic fingerings, and the tab is clearly written by a real guitarist and not computer-generated.The print and typography are also quite clear and easy to read.

For a student guitarist who is in limbo between the beginner and intermediate levels, these arrangements would make excellent learning pieces that could be confidently played in or out of church.For the advanced guitarist, these pieces could nearly be sight-read but sound good enough to be pleasing to an audience accustomed to advanced musicianship.

I'm a bivocational music leader and have been using this book in our worship services.I plan to purchase "Fingerpicking Hymns" in hopes that its quality will be similar to that of this book.
