Coloratura Arias for Soprano (G Schirmer Opera Anthology Series) Review

Coloratura Arias for Soprano [Paperback]

The goal of the editors does not appear to have been to present the most difficult coloratura soprano pieces, but to set out a range of music that the student and instructor could use in order to develop flexibility in the voice.Well done!

Product Description:
An excellent volume of coloratura arias has been added to the G. Schirmer Opera Anthology series. With thirty 18th-20th century arias in English, Italian, German, French and Russian, this is the largest collection of coloratura operatic excerpts ever published. Because of the nature of the material, tradition-based performance suggestions are liberally found throughout the volume. For instance, you will find standard vocal variations for the "Doll Song" from The Tales of Hoffmann included in the edition, along with the original vocal line. Like the other volumes in the ground-breaking series, there are historical and plot notes about each aria, new engravings, and new translations for study.

The New Voice: How to Sing and Speak Properly Review

The New Voice: How to Sing and Speak Properly [Paperback]

I agree wholeheartedly with the first reviewer. This book tells you how to sing, not just what should happen in good singing. Idon't know of any other book that spends the time needed to addresssetting up the structure for singing and especially the tongue and high larynx which causesmost of the problems that as a voice teacher I encounter! This is amazing.getting over the urge to gag is really worth it! I'd like to be in contact with other teachers and singers who find this really great. It has meant so much to many of my students who went to teachers who seemed to be afraid of this approach and who use only the ear and imagery to overcome real physical ignorance ormisunderstandings. There ishelp out there for the tight, retracting, tense and lazy tongue. What freedom this offers!!!!!!

This one is for high voice.I don't see that Amazon sells the low voice edition (which exists).Amazon should plainly indicate "high voice"!

Still, with the "amazing slow-downer" software on the CD it's usable for basses like me.

The product itself is in great condition and has great material. However, the product took more than 2 weeks to ship. Usually my Amazon.com orders come in sooner. I understand that is was through a different company, but it was rather hindering to me to have my merchandise not shipped for so long. I hope this will change.

Gershwin at the Keyboard : 18 Song Hits Arranged by The Composer for Piano Review

Gershwin at the Keyboard : 18 Song Hits Arranged by The Composer for Piano [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

As George Gershwin writes in the introduction, "Sheet music, as ordinarily printed for mass sales, is arranged with an eye to simplicity."In this collection of 18 Gershwin songs, which includes Fascinating Rhythm, Somebody Loves Me, Strike Up the Band, and I Got Rhythm, he presents his music in a way that reflects his "desire for complication and variety that every composer feels when he manipulates the same material over and over again."

Though not for the beginner, these pieces will reward the more advanced pianists who love the Gershwin style. He even supplies a hint about how to play them - keep your foot off the sustaining pedal.American popular music (in the early twentieth century, at least) "asks for staccato effects, for almost a stenciled style."

If you've been at the piano for a few years and love his music, you'll enjoy this collection. If you prefer simpler arrangements with lyrics, try "50 Gershwin Classics," also available through Amazon.

P.S. A note to sheet music publishers: Why not include a few sample pages so web users can judge for themselves whether the arrangements are appealing?

Big Band & Swing (Ultimate Showstoppers Series) Review

Big Band & Swing [Paperback]

Almost all the big band songs I've enjoyed over the years like Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy, and many others including lots of what are now jazz standards, many from 1930's movies, plus lots of Glenn Miller and Cole Porter hits. The sheet music seems like the original as published and is fairly easy to read. Most songs fit onto 3 pages.

I haven't seen any collection with anything close to as many of my favorite big band hits.

If only it were spiral bound or something so it would stay flat - I make copies of the sheets so I can keep them flat on the piano music stand

The Definitive Jazz Collection (Definitive Collections) Review

The Definitive Jazz Collection [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No "fake book", or "real book" this. You get full, well-thought-out harmonizations. This isn't how Jazz pianists acquire their numbers, but hey, this graduate of the weekly visit to the traditional read-the-music-and-play-it-exactly-as-written piano teacher likes it just fine this way.Having played through about 25% of the songs, I'll say there are no really bad arrangements, and quite a few very good ones. The technical difficulty is toward the higher end of the non-classical stuff you find in the music stores -- the average song is about as hard (if you want to play all the notes) as a Chopin Waltz or a Clementi Sonatina.

Sacred Classics: The Vocal Library Low Voice (Vocal Collection) Review

Sacred Classics: The Vocal Library Low Voice [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you are a baritone, an alto, or a mezzo soprano who sings in church, you will find this book handy. Students of classical singing will also appreciate it.
The sheet music includes 10 of the sacred classics that are most often used throughout the liturgical year: Bizet's "Agnus Dei," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and others of the same stature. The accompaniments are easy enough for the average church pianist or organist.
There is a CD with each piece sung very well, and also practice tracks with just the accompaniment. This is a big help to music students and soloists who like to practice with accompaniment at home (or, hey, in the car -- why not?). The CD can be adjusted, when played on your computer, to slow down sections for intensive work.
This is a very useful book for the church musician, singer, or singing teacher to keep on hand.

Product Description:
A fantastic resource for Leonard Bernstein's rich theatre songs, from On the Town, Peter Pan, Wonderful Town, Candide, West Side Story, Mass, 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, and other shows. Includes several songs cut from shows, songs never before published, and also new solo editions of some songs that have never before been available as stand-alone numbers. The songs have been newly engraved and edited, largely presented in authentic vocal score format (rather than piano/vocal sheet music arrangements). The song lists are not the same for High Voice and Low Voice editions; some songs are transposed; others are uniquely in only one volume.

This book provides accurate keyboard reductions for many of the major songs in the show. The melodic line does not appear in the piano part in favor of a more accurate representation of orchestral lines (HOORAY!).Warner Brothers Music has been very faithful to the original score, and has included all the vocal lines for the big numbers. So, if you like the show and want the sheet music (and don't feel like transcribing) you should buy the book!

Lucky Stiff Review

Lucky Stiff [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty released their magnificent piece of theatre, 'Ragtime' as a follow-up to 'Once on this Island', theatre people across the world knew that a new force had joined the decades old Lloyd-Webber/ Sondheim competition for audiences. However, it is in the privacy of ones home that these two musical, and the preceeding one, 'Lucky Stiff', show their aptitude. 'Lucky Stiff' is no 'Ragtime', but it is easy to see, through songs like 'It was Nice' and 'Dogs Versus You', how this duo has developed a magnificent symmetry between catchy tunes and powerful, poetic lyrics. The humour inherent in Lucky STiff's plot, the story of a young man whose uncle dies and leaves him a large sum of money, only to find out via cassette tape that his past uncle expects him to take the decorated corpse around Monte Carlo on a final holiday, leads to few opportunities for the songs to provide real dramatic resonance, the very thing that makes Ragtime such a worthwhile listening experience. While Lucky STiff provided a strong foundation upon which to develop the musical skills Ahren and Flaherty are renowned for, it was only, and will remail the first step in that journey. It cannot, therefore, be rated as highly as the others, but is still a worthwhile addition to your musical theatre collection.

I love this music. This new team of Goldrich & Heisler is just wonderful.Continuing in the Kander & Ebb tradition of good vocal writing, interesting music, acting skills required, and often hilarious lyrics, these songs are a joy to sing.I am so glad that they are being published. My only complaint is that I had to have the book rebound within one week - the first time I opened it enough to be able to play the songs on the piano (in other words, broke the spine), pages fell out!!But, take it to your local copy store, have the covers laminated and have the book spiral bound - you'll never have to worry about the spine again and the music will continue to inspire you!

Perfect Wrong Note - Learning to Trust Your Musical Self (Softcover) (Amadeus) Review

Perfect Wrong Note - Learning to Trust Your Musical Self [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a professional musician, a retired piano teacher of 25 years. In October of 2004, I produced my first cd of pre-Baroque pieces into an album called, "Carry the Light."Recently, I found out about "The Perfect Wrong Note" by William Westney from a friend. The book is stunning, progressive and suffice it to say, it will rub some traditionalist the wrong way.Westney totally challenges traditional teaching methods and rightly so. There is a revealing "Question and Answer" section in the book on pp. 95-97 which provides an astute summary of Westney's teaching philosophy. I found the following Q and A challenging to some very traditionalist teachings on using the metronome; "Is it a good idea to use a metronome?"Westney's replies, "Only for short periods, as a check of tempo consistency. If we use it too much we become passive slaves to it, and our inner rhythm stays dormant."Westney emphasizes that playing the piano is a "whole body, whole brain" experience. In terms of Westney's approach being a "feel good" philosophy, nothing could be further from the truth. When asked (p. 97), "Can your approach be simply stated as, "Just don't fret about wrong notes, after all nobody's perfect.?"Westney's response is clearly direct; "No.This isn't a feel good philosophy: it's a pragmatic problem-solving plan along the road to artistry.Control, accuracy, and refinement are still the goals."Westney takes a groundbreaking approach to teaching piano without killing the hope and aspirations of the student. That is to be herald and this work will be deeply respected by teachers willing to take on new and exciting challenges that take heed to an important ethos Westney holds for anyone practicing the piano."As you practice sense that you are taking care of yourself at every moment.Expect musical performing to be fun and feel good.Question any part of it that doesn't feel that way.Think of yourself as a healty athlete. Relax frequently and take stock." (p.227) I can't think of any performing philosophy that is more hope filled than that.

He offers healthy alternatives for lifelong learning and suggests significant change in the way music is taught. For example, playing a wrong note can be constructive, useful, even enlightening. The creator of the acclaimed Un-Master Class workshop also explores the special potential of group work, outlining the basics of his revelatory workshop that has transformed the music experience for participants the world over. Practicing, in Westney's view, is a lively, honest, adventurous, and spiritually rewarding enterprise, and it can (and should) meet with daily success, which empowers us to grow even more.
