The 16-Bar Theatre Audition: 100 Songs Excerpted for Succesful Auditions (Vocal Collection-Baritone/Bass) Review

The 16-Bar Theatre Audition: 100 Songs Excerpted for Succesful Auditions [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great audition resource, as it not only has the songs already broken down into audition-ready length, but it also includes a wide variety. There are pieces from shows old and contemporary. And although some of the music goes a bit over 16 bars, this is generally nto a big deal. It's maybe two-four bars over. Directors are typically more concerned with your voice than PRECISE bar count. These selections keep it close, though.

Product Description:
Most large audition calls for musical theatre, both professionally and in larger school situations, specify that those auditioning bring in a "16 bar" excerpt. The professionals in musical theatre often complain that singers don't know how to construct an appropriate 16 bar audition, either in choosing a song or in editing an excerpt. With this new series, that problem is solved forever! Editor Michael Dansicker, a composer/producer/music director, is a seasoned musical theatre veteran, with 100 Broadway credits. He brings his expertise and broad knowledge of the literature to this series. Each excerpt has been given a thoughtful, graceful and effective form. No more illegible scribblings for the poor audition accompanist! An enormous variety of literature is represented, from old standards to movie songs to the latest Broadway and Off-Broadway material. With 100 songs per volume, any singing actor, whatever his or her talents and strong suits, will have many choices. In the preface, the editor gives valuable pointers on the nature of a good audition and some factors in choosing songs.

Into the Woods (Vocal Score) Review

Into the Woods [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is such beautiful music that Sondheim has written. I just wish that all of the spoken text, and music could all be together somewhere. It's so difficult, and somewhat frustrating trying to go back and forth between the book of dialogue, and then back to the music. I'm a musician that needs to see the music going on underneath me, and don't like to learn my music by just listening to a recording of it. Maybe some day the two will be printed together.

The Rough Guide to Film Musicals 1 (Rough Guide Reference) Review

The Rough Guide to Film Musicals 1 [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As part of the expanding Rough Guide series covering the entertainment field, Empire Magazine film critic and historian David Parkinson has done a smart, admirable job documenting the history of the film musical genre within the book's 326 pages. The key to its success is the way he divides the volume, first with a cursory look at the stage shows and minstrel revues that preceded film, the concept of silent musicals before talkies arrived, and tracking how the musical film has evolved over the last century. Parkinson spotlights iconic figures both in front of and behind the camera. The usual suspects are here - Astaire, Kelly, Garland, Gershwin, Rodgers and Hammerstein - but also "underused" figures like the Nicholas Brothers and Ethel Waters.

The most interesting section describes how musicals work in terms of plot devices and visual style. Obviously, no guide is complete without a list of the fifty essential cinematic musicals, a relatively sturdy list that combines indisputable classics (Singin' in the Rain, Swing Time, the 1936 version of Show Boat) with long-forgotten gems (Summer Holiday, The Love Parade) and films of a more recent vintage (Chicago, Evita). There is a quick rundown of international musicals broken down by country, as well as lists of the best soundtracks, genre Web sites and books for further reading on the subject. My one overriding criticism is the overly jaundiced comments Parkinson makes about musicals he considers essential but obviously detests (High Society, West Side Story). Regardless, this is a fun read for aficionados of the genre.

Ever After: The Last Years of Musical Theater and Beyond Review

Ever After: The Last Years of Musical Theater and Beyond [Hardcover]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Primarily Barry Singer's compilation (with some re-editing) of pieces he wrote for a number of publications, perhaps most notably The New York Times, Ever After: The Last Years of Musical Theater and Beyond is intriguing as surface-level look at the last couple of decades in musical theater. It's useful for little else, however--Singer speeds through discussions of important shows, wastes time detailing events and productions of minor importance at best, and never provides a truly engaging or thought-provoking point of view.Instead, he attempts to pass his opinions off as fact, which results in a number of statements of questionable veracity that have been noted by theater writers and critics from the esteemed Mr. Miller to Peter Filichia.Perhaps even more unfortunate is that Singer's chronicle covers exactly the same time period as Ethan Mordden's forthcoming The Happiest Corpse I've Ever Seen: The Last 25 Years of Musical Theatre; Singer's Ever After does not stand up well to Mordden's latest volume, coming across more as a simpleton's whining screed opposite an intelligent and informed gentleman's thoughtful analysis.Ever After is perhaps most enjoyed and appreciated by those with little functional knowledge of the workings of New York theater; they're likely to find Singer's anecdotes more interesting than people who know it's possible cover the subject in considerably more depth than Singer attempts.

Product Description:
Ever After is more than a detailed show-by-show history of the last quarter century in American musical theater. It explains how the storied Broadway tradition in many cases went so very wrong. Singer takes the reader behind the scenes for an unparalleled look at A Chorus Line's final bow, the creation of Rent, the real people behind Disney's uber-musicals, and even an afternoon with Andrew Lloyd Webber.Ever After also celebrates the promise of the next generation of young musical theater artists, especially Adam Guettel, Michael John LaChiusa, Ricky Ian Gordon and Jason Robert Brown, addressing not only their work to date, but their future projects. There is no other book currently available that covers this period and subject. Through his work for The New York Times, Singer has interviewed virtually everyone of significance. They are all here, very much speaking for themselves. Ever After is both anecdotal and analytical, featuring personality profiles of important creative figures, from Jule Styne to Stephen Sondheim to Jonathan Larson, while critically evaluating all of the many musicals produced during the past 25 years.Sure to generate debate, this is a book written not only for the musical theater aficionado, but for anyone who has seen a Broadway musical or has just enjoyed the movie version of Chicago and is curious to know more.

Includes several songs cut from shows, songs never before published, and also new solo editions of some songs that have never before been available as stand-alone numbers. The songs have been newly engraved and edited, largely presented in authentic vocal score format (rather than piano/vocal sheet music arrangements). The Sound of Their Music: The Story of Rodgers and Hammerstein (Applause Books) Review

The Sound of Their Music: The Story of Rodgers and Hammerstein [Hardcover]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Frederick Nolan tells the story of Rodgers and Hammerstein both as a team and as separate people. Indeed there is a good deal of space allotted to their careers BEFORE they ever worked together. But after they team up the narrative becomes more lively and a real page turner, at least partly because Nolan's style is graceful and charming in itself. He seems to have read everything written about them, even going so far as to watch TV kinescopes of them from the 1950s, and he talked to many people who knew them, worked with them.
It's the backstage stories that make the book sing. Practically every page has a at least one fascinating anecdote. And he doesn't sugar-coat their personalities--Rodgers's curtness, even cruelty, and Hammerstein's insecurity, tendency to swallow his pride.
It's hard to read the book without singing to yourself. My God, what songs these two wrote! But more than that, what dramatists they were; they broke convention again and again and mostly successfully.
Pull out your recordings of Oklahoma!, Carousel, South Pacific and start reading!
