Kurt Weill Songs -- A Centennial Anthology Review

Kurt Weill Songs -- A Centennial Anthology [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This Anthology is a due tribute to the great songwriter, German-born Kurt Weill. His compositions include hits like Mack the Knife, September Song and Alabama Song - all of them obviously included in the anthology (but you have to buy both volumes!). The two parts of the anthology have each and every song by Weill ever published separately (ie. not as a part of a full musical score). What's more, the sheet music is an exact reprint of the original, which ensures that no alterations have been done - they are faithful to the smallest degree. Most are piano+voice scores, but some also include guitar chords. Some songs are in German, some in French and some in English. "Mack the Knife" both in the original Dreigroschen Opera German version and in the English one.
The books are quite thick (might fall down from a sheet music stand), but well-bound and not very likely to break or fall apart. Some biographical/background info is also included in both volumes, as well as a few black-and-white photographs.
All in all, the anthology is a small treasure and you'd be hard-pressed to find all the individual songs in any bookshop or any other edition. So if you love Kurt Weill's music (and can read scores), you'll certainly love this collection.

Everything Was Possible: The Birth of the Musical Follies (Applause Books) Review

Everything Was Possible: The Birth of the Musical Follies [Paperback]

Ted Chapin was the luckiest 20 year old whoever lived. As a "production assistant" (unpaid gofer)for the new Broadway musical "Follies", he had the opportunity and good sense to record the making of one of the greatest musicals of that era."Everything Was Possible" covers the first rehearsals to the abysmal cast recording to what has happened to the people involved. Starting from pre production on, his narrative never gets stale. He tells of how Hal Prince, Stephen Sondheim and Michael Bennett pulled it all off.It wasn't always fun. They had to deal with a group of aging actors who found negotiating a raked stage dangerous and a lot of their vulnerabilites and insecurities.
The book will have significant impact on anyone who saw the show. I did not see it in New York but at the end of its Broadway run it was to go on a national tour starting in Los Angeles. With most of the original cast intact I sat center section at the Shubert Theatre in Los Angeles in September, 1972.
It was one of the most emotional roller coasters I have been on in the theatre. The tour ended two weeks later and "Follies" has seldom been revived.
All musical theatre afficionados will love Chapin's book.Thank you Ted for letting us see those "Beautiful Girls" one more time.

While this book is simply amazing... you should either get thecd to listen to while reading this script or watch the movie tohear/see the fabulous performances and Sondheim's glorious music. This book is still worth buying even if you aren't able to hear the score. This play works in mysterious ways and bring out many passionate feelings in anyone with a heart. It conveys and brings forth emotions from anger to pity with Fosca, love and hate, hapiness and depression... This is a truly beautiful book!

A Man of No Importance Review

From me,that is high praise indeed. A soaring score. So simple and yet so elegant. A show that I missed at Lincoln Center. But I'll not make that mistake again.
The cast is very talented and sings beautifully. Roger Rees is so good in the lead that I've now forgiven him for "The Red Shoes", my all-time worst musical.
I do not give 5 star reviews often. I truly recommend this cd.

Product Description:
Two Frenchmen, an idea, and a blank piece of paper. That's how it started. Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schonberg are the creators of the multi-award-winning and much-loved musicals Les Miserables, Miss Saigon, Martin Guerre and now an exciting new work The Pirate Queen. Les Miserables alone has been seen by over 53 million people. The Musical World of Boublil and Schonberg is the first book to offer a comprehensive look behind the closed doors of these intensely private musical theatre giants. Boublil and Schonberg take center stage and talk openly about their methods and the creative processes involved in writing the book, the music, and the lyrics. Additional interviews from collaborators such as their co-writers Herbert Kretzmer, Richard Maltby, Stephen Clark, and John Dempsey; their directors Trevor Nunn, John Caird, Nicholas Hytner, Conall Morrison, and Frank Galati; the choreographer of The Pirate Queen, Mark Dendy; and their long-time producer Cameron Mackintosh gives the reader a full view into their successful process. Full-color production photographs tell the story of each musical.Visit www.musicalworld-boublil-schonberg.com for more information!

Annie Get Your Gun (Vocal Selections) Review

Annie Get Your Gun [Paperback]

I bought this book after seeing the show, and decided to use some songs in auditions. This book is very good because they give you most of the songs from the musical. Most of the songs are in there but not all of thereprises are there. The confusing part of the book is the fact that theydon't give the names of the characters singing the songs.Clear and easyto read music adds to the benefits of this book! Great for those justlearning to read music. Would be challenging for a beginning pianist.

Sweeney Todd - Vocal Selections Review

After taking a part in this show in the fall of 1998, I fell in love with each character within the show.I desperately wanted the score to the show, but realized that this idea was out of the question because it would cost me (too much money). In theater class, i was searching through scripts and came across this rather thin but thourough script of Sweeney Todd. It's definitely a keeper with all of the rare pictures and drawings thatare included in it.Buy it!
