The cleaness of the lay-out the use of original language only with a literal and literate translation by Martha Gerhart at the beginning of the of the score and thechoice of arias for the young singer are commendable. The inclusion ofcadenze and oppure, not found in other collections, is valuable. However,all of the anthologies edited by Larsen have the same problem. Page turns.Larsen is a fine pianist and should know better. I have had many pianistscomplain about or refuse to play from Larsen scores. Whenever a difficultpassage to play occurs it is invaribly on a page turn. The collection is agreat study tool, but less than ideal in performance.

I completely agree with the two reviews below about the book being difficult to hold open. However, you could easily break the binding the put it in a binder yourself, or copy it and have it as sheets.

This anthology has wonderful pieces for alto soloists, and I strongly recommend it to anyone who is looking for alto solo pieces!

Madama Butterfly: Vocal Score Review

(More customer reviews)I purchased this score for a performance of Butterfly in July and August of this year.You would think a Ricordi score would have the Italian text on top.But, no, on top is a larger type English text.Underneath is the barely legible Italian text.Maybe I'm missing something, but most of the Butterfly recordings that I'm familiar with are sung in Italian.Perhaps singing the opera in English was an earlier practice and I've heard "Un bel di sung" in English, but really it isn't standard practice for this opera anymore, and Ricordi should update their score.I literally had to take corrector tape and white-out the English, so I would only have the Italian below my music. I prefer to write out my own translations anyways, so the English took up precious score space, when the Italian could have been made far more legible.

Other than that, and a few mistakes here and there, the music is clear, and the score is a tough one.I've spilled some coffee on the cover, and it wiped off well, with no damage.The binding is also pretty strong.

The sheet music includes 10 of the sacred classics that are most often used throughout the liturgical year: Bizet's "Agnus Dei," Franck's "Panis Angelicus," the Bach-Gounod "Ave Maria," and others of the same stature. The accompaniments are easy enough for the average church pianist or organist.
There is a CD with each piece sung very well, and also practice tracks with just the accompaniment. This is a big help to music students and soloists who like to practice with accompaniment at home (or, hey, in the car -- why not?). The CD can be adjusted, when played on your computer, to slow down sections for intensive work.
This is a very useful book for the church musician, singer, or singing teacher to keep on hand.

(More customer reviews)This book is one of the most extensive compilations of the great, lighter soprano arias that I've seen either online or in music libraries. It has a variety of arias that makes this album very useful for nearly any lyric, coloratura and lighter soprano from intermediate to professional level. This book is definitely not suited for beginners in terms of performance; but thinking back to my early days as an aspiring singer I think I would have very much liked to own this book if not only to follow along with the songs I dreamed of singing as an adult.

This book includes much in terms of grace notes that are typically sung, but does not include any optional melismatic passages at all. Usually there will be a smaller staff illustrating such options; but in the case of this book there is usually enough room in between systems to write in your favorite runs.

All in all I would recommend this book to any soprano, teacher, or voice coach because it is a great addition to any home, school, or studio music library.

24 Italian Songs and Arias - Medium High Voice (Book only) (Schirmer's Library of Musical Classics) Review

(More customer reviews)Although the music in this book has been used "ad infinitum" since the late 1880's, even the most rudimentary scholarship has shown that the editing (and in at least one case, the composition) of these pieces is not to be trusted.

The editor of "The 24" and its sister two volume set "Anthology of Italian song" is Alessandro Parisotti.Mr. Parisotti was a publisher who was suspiciously eager to have his own edited works published.This "24" has its share of dubious songs. Three quick examples:

1.) "Se Tu M'ami" is attributed to Pergolesi, but the style is laughably un-Pergolesi-like.No original of the score exists before Mr. Parisotti "discovered" it in time to publish the original 24. It is quite likely that Parisotti is the composer.
2.) "Il mio bel foco" is fine until the last 11 measures, where once again there is no original of what's in "the 24". It appears that Parisotti sliced, diced and re-composed the last 11 measures including French sixth chords, and a piano accompaniment which is distinctly not from the Baroque era.
3.) "Danza Danza fanciulla..." does have an original; it's all figured bass (no treble accompaniment written at all.)It's OK to place your own accompaniment there, but Parisotti's offbeat (and unnecessarily difficult) accompaniment does not follow the typical contrapuntal style of the Baroque period at all.

There are several other problems with the realizations of these 24 pieces - too many to go into here, but worth exploring in research.

That being said, Parisotti does get credit for at least noticing these pieces and arranging them for student voices (which may or may not have been his intent).The current edition is ridiculously cheap - which actually reflects the rather large (and much improved) collections of Baroque Italian songs that are out there.

It still (for some reason) remains a staple of too many voice teachers out there (possibly because they are "comfortable" in some way), so accompanists should continue to purchase it due to the large number of voice students and performers who (unfortunately) rely on it.

It probably deserves two stars, but because it's receiving way too many five star reviews, I'm giving it just one.

(More customer reviews)I own both this 26 song book/Cd as well as the 24 song book/CD from John Keene and Schirmer.I use the John Paton 26 song version in order to read the excellent one page introductions it provides for each song..However my singing teacher feels that the piano accompaniments in the Paton book are pretentious, and he prefers the piano accompaniments in the Keene/Schirmer book.So, I use the CD and music from the Schirmer book but I do my research via the Paton book.The Keen/Schirmer book has a lot less melody ornamentation than the John Paton book.In my opinion, which is the opinion of a beginner, the ornamentation added to the melody in the John Paton book is excessive and is also confusing in that he never explains how to reconcile all the little notes he added, to the larger font melody notes that often seem to be at odds with the tinier notes.What is deeply, desperately need, I strongly feel, is a recording oftenors, sopranos, and baritones actually singing all 24 (or 26) of these songs!Please, if anyone knows of the existance of such as recording, post it in a user review.It would be a tremendous help.Also, note that in both the Keene/Schirmer version and the John Paton version, the piano accompaniment often does not include the melody.So, it can be "dicey" when trying to learn one of the songs to figure out the melody if the only resource available is the accompanying CD.Personally, I record the melodies into a sequencer program on my PC via a midi attached digital keyboard, but the average singer is not likely to have the technical expertise to do that.It would have been very helpful if the accompanying CD's had recorded each song twice, the second time with the melody superimposed on top of the accompaniment.My singer teacher tells me that these 24 (or 26) songs are the "bible" among singing students. Thus, a singing student really has no choice but to buy at least one of these two editions.
