This a valuable anthology and has much to recommend it. The cleaness of the lay-out the use of original language only with a literal and literate translation by Martha Gerhart at the beginning of the of the score and thechoice of arias for the young singer are commendable. The inclusion ofcadenze and oppure, not found in other collections, is valuable. However, all of the anthologies edited by Larsen have the same problem. Page turns.Larsen is a fine pianist and should know better. I have had many pianistscomplain about or refuse to play from Larsen scores. Whenever a difficultpassage to play occurs it is invaribly on a page turn. The collection is agreat study tool, but less than ideal in performance.

Easy Songs for the Beginning Tenor (Easy Songs for Beginning Singers) Review

Easy Songs for the Beginning Tenor [Paperback]

Joan Boytim has put together another diverse collection of repertory geared to less experienced singers. Some excellent more expected choices as well as some out of print pieces that are less familiar but still well worth the time to consider. My only lament is the exclusion of non-English language texts. There are some songs given in singable translations from the original language, but fail to include the original language as an option for singers who may want to learn foreign diction on simpler repertory. I agree that foreign texts are a difficulty for many new singers, but including both versions of the text offer more options for the studio teacher. Still, all in all, a good collection and well worth the price.

As for the accompaniment CD - It is useful to have, but buyers should be aware that no example tracks exist, and there are numerous tempo and stylistic variations choices made that are not reflected in the music itself. It is usually fairly clear upon 2nd or 3rd listening, but some students may have trouble going from a "straight" performance to the more stylized piano version. A number of the pieces DO include much of the melody line in the accompaniment, but the majority do not.

Larsen, any singer anywhere has access to the best diction coaching available at a very affordable price. Each aria is recorded twice. The second version is a slow, deliberate lesson, allowing time for the student to repeat each line. These experienced language coaches adapt the "R" in German and French in the slow versions for singers. They also are very sensitive to liaisons between word sounds in the musical settings. The book includes International Phonetic Alphabet for each aria and word for word translations. The native speaking professional diction coaches from the Metropolitan Opera and the Juilliard School are: Corradina Caporello for Italian, Pierre Vallet for French, Irene Spiegelman for German, Kathryn LaBouff for English, Yveta Synek Graff for Czech, and Gina Levinson for Russian.
