Satie for the Guitar: Guitar Solo (Guitar Collection) Review

Satie for the Guitar: Guitar Solo [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The six pieces in this book are a pleasant departure from the usual Spanish music for classical guitar.Despite being originally written for piano, these pieces transcribe well. For an intermediate guitarist they are pretty easy to play with no wildly odd chords or long stretches. The notation used is like nothing I've ever seen before but a few minutes with your guitar will help you figure out the fingering.
It helps to hear someone else play these pieces first (either on piano or guitar)so, if you sight reading is as suspect as mine, you may want to pay a visit to Napster or something to listen.
The music is only in "proper" music form, not tablature.

Classic Rock Fake Book - 2nd Edition Review

Classic Rock Fake Book - 2nd Edition [Plastic Comb]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fake Books have just the melody/lyric line (staff); piano players will only have their right hand busy; the left "fakes" it. And there's no tabs and songs are in their actual keys, so you need to read music. But if you do and either are good at theory or play a non-chording instrument, they're fantastic.

This book has a very impressive selection of songs, but "Classic Rock" doesn't describe it.More like "SuperHits of the 70s and 80s".There's some rock, some pop, some glam, a pretty wide variety of stuff people will likely request or that you might enjoy playing, but it's not all "rock" and certainly not "classic rock" - it's got songs from Heart, Bon Jovi and Jefferson Starship, fer cryin' out loud!Very playable stuff.

I enjoy this book a lot.I also enjoy the Disney Fake Book and the Ultimate Fake Book; there's not much overlap between them. The breadth of styles (again, it's not all classic rock) is a nice touch, and most of the songs were really big hits at one time. There are some omissions and excesses. No Dire Straits, but 22 Beatles songs.Six Elton John, but no Candle/Funeral for a Friend? No Led Zeppelin but FOUR Lennon/Ono (and one Lennon solo) songs? But on average it's a great collection.

1001 Blues Licks: For All Treble Clef Instruments (Instrumental) Review

1001 Blues Licks: For All Treble Clef Instruments [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This 1000 blues lick book and the 1000 jazz lick book are some of the best values on this site for practising musicians. The blues book is broken up into styles and the jazz book is broken into progressions. Licks are the next step after scales. They are real life applications of scales. The blues licks are visceral and require vibrato. The jazz licks are longer and require dexterity and accuracy. There's no tab but you can do that for yourself as a memory aid. I'm not a great music reader but these are single lines and thus not difficult to read. Once you learn how to play the lick in one position you should learn most of these licks in at least two other positions which makes them easier to translate to other keys. You can also reverse and invert them for additional color. If you love lines and phrases as much as I do I'd recommend buying both books !

A Modern Approach to Classical Repertoire - Part 1: Guitar Technique (Modern Approach to Classical Guitar) Review

A Modern Approach to Classical Repertoire - Part 1: Guitar Technique [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

I've had this book for over five years and the music sounds great. It starts out with relatively easy pieces and you can learn to play nice sounding music from the get-go.Right and Left hand notation is used for problem areas. The author lists the notes/min that you can match with a metronome to get a sense of a goal of how fast to play. Most of the pieces are in the first five frets. If you want to progress beyond five frets, I would hook up with a teacher. All the pieces area good mix of Sor, giuliani, carulli, carcassi, etc.

Ultimate Christmas Guitar Book Review

Ultimate Christmas Guitar Book [Plastic Comb]
Average Reviews:

This book was a gift for my husband who plays guitar and sings with a group of young adults every day at work. It has a great selection of Christmas songs with lyrics and tabs included for each song. Has a comb binding, so it lays open nice and flat with no struggle. He did mention that, at least for some of the songs, the guitar chords are pretty simple....but better too easy than too hard I guess, since a more experienced player can always add on to what's written!

Jerry Snyder's Guitar School, Ensemble Book 1 Review

Jerry Snyder's Guitar School, Ensemble Book 1 [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Find a friend or two who is also learning guitar and have fun playing these songs together. This book is for students who are beginning to read notes up to the fifth fret.Nice and simple arrangements of some classical music, Christmas music and a little jazz for two or more players. However, with an inexpensive recording device, a student can record one part and then play a second part with the recording.Teachers love having students play duets and in trios or quartets. It makes counting the beats a very helpful thing to learn; prepares students to play in band.I rated it four stars as I found a bit too much unison playing in a couple of arrangements.I changed some of the unison to thirds in a couple of places to make the music even more exciting.

This was a great piano book. It has a lot of good songs by the Carpenters in there. My only regret is that the songs aren't in the correct key that the Carpenters actually played them in. If you are looking for a book like that, get Love Songs.
