(More customer reviews)Once I got past the defects of my 1st copy (which had to thus be exchanged), there is no question of this being another gem to add to Dover's collection of fine reprinted 1st-edition scores, with this one to boot having the bonus of having apparently-decent singing-translations in German and English in addition to the original Russian version by Konstántin Bálmont which Sjergjéy Vasíljevich Rakhmáñinov set.[The very fact that the English version used in the score is NOT the original Poe poem-set can indicate just how virtually untranslateable poetry usually happens to be (hence one book trying to do that writing of such attempts as 'a study in failure')!!]The only regret from this non-Italianophile writer is that the the instrumental nomenclature is in Italian (unlike the same original publisher's "Ostróva Mjórtvïkh" {Isle of the Dead}, Op.29, which was basically done in German);however, that's inconsequential.[Another thing that might have been of help could have been to print the two scores in one volume;furthermore, the original publisher Gutheil often lets blank staves fill up pages and systems where perhaps they could have profitably been omitted - but that's not Dover's fault at all...]Otherwise, bravo Dover!!!!

(More customer reviews)The music is fantastic, being the most popular concerto repertoire of Russian origin, but the edition assumes the reader some sort of Russian professional.Right away one notices that there are very few fingeringsnoted, and altogether I have found maybe one editor's note on execution inthe entirety of the two concertos.The edition contains no introduction tothe music, no informative synopsis of any sort, no helpful backgroundhistory on the composer's methods, reasonings or motivation for the musicto aid the interpreter, nothing at all, in fact, but the notes themselves. Not even a photograph of Rachmaninoff or Tchaikovsky to identify the namewith.This lack of support for the performer is considerably below thestandards of any serious edition.Unless one is well-prepared with someamount of collected knowledge of Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky, and with theexperience of having listened to each of these concertos, the edition willleave you stranded.But, then again, it is great music one must have.

(More customer reviews)This is a wonderful collection for all admirers of Rachmaninov. While the 14 or so songs without opus numbers are not included in this edition, the majority of Rachmaninov songs are and they form a strong part of his creative output (spanning nearly 20 years).
An affordable and easily obtainable book, it is good not only for general study and performance, but also for comparison and study of pianist Earl Wild's brilliant transcriptions of thirteen of the songs (and Arcadi Volodos' two song transcriptions).
