Ballet 101: A Complete Guide to Learning and Loving the Ballet (Limelight) Review

Ballet 101: A Complete Guide to Learning and Loving the Ballet [Paperback]

Reading this book was a good learning experience -- the author, clearly, knows his stuff; at the same time, it's a bit awkward, hard to read (somewhat meandering, artificially florid, disjointed at times, with proofreading snafus -- for example, "graphein" is said to be a German word: obviously a typo made in haste) -- overall, I wish the writing were simpler, more to the point; it'd be great if an editor kneaded it all into a more graceful literary shape.

Recommended though: although the book can be improved, overall it's informative, quite good for a novice.

PS. When reading reviews on this page, please be careful to distinguish between bona-fide reviews by real readers and phony commercial blurbs by publishers' flunkeys who dishonestly use the amazon review capability to post advertizing copy here. A case in point, a review right above, by "D. Donovan, Editor/Sr. Reviewer": visit this person's reviews page and count the number of reviews posted in a single day. For example, on April 26, no less than forty (40!) reviews were added by this "reviewer", and so on, nearly every day, back to the beginning of time. No one can read forty books a day every day, to say nothing of reviewing them afterwards. I've discovered lately that this is a very widespread practice here. Beware! Not every reviewer posting something here is honest.

Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 & Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 (With Orchestral Reduction for Second Piano) Review

Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 & Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2 [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

The music is fantastic, being the most popular concerto repertoire of Russian origin, but the edition assumes the reader some sort of Russian professional.Right away one notices that there are very few fingeringsnoted, and altogether I have found maybe one editor's note on execution inthe entirety of the two concertos. The edition contains no introduction tothe music, no informative synopsis of any sort, no helpful backgroundhistory on the composer's methods, reasonings or motivation for the musicto aid the interpreter, nothing at all, in fact, but the notes themselves. Not even a photograph of Rachmaninoff or Tchaikovsky to identify the namewith. This lack of support for the performer is considerably below thestandards of any serious edition.Unless one is well-prepared with someamount of collected knowledge of Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky, and with theexperience of having listened to each of these concertos, the edition willleave you stranded. But, then again, it is great music one must have.

This is an easy-to-read set of score of two of Peter Tchaikovsky's most celebrated orchestral works. As to Capriccio Italien, Tchaikovsky began composing this upon the inspiration he got when he was staying in Florence,Italy. It is a bunch of published Italian folk-tunes and popular tunesthat caught his ears during his stay in Italy. He began composing in Romein 1880 and finished it after he returned to Russia.Romeo and Juliet isone of the pieces that initially made Tchaikovsky internationally famous, composed during September and November 1869.Both Romeo and Juliet andCapriccio Italien reflect Tchaikovsky's talent in producing of uniquelyconvincing melodies and excellence in orchestration. And this score is afine companion for those wishing to pursue a detailed study ofTchaikovsky's masterpieces.

Eugene Onegin in Full Score Review

Eugene Onegin in Full Score [Paperback]

A very beautiful reproduction of an older Russian edition, with clear, legible text and music. So far, I've not found any reasons to justify the complaints issued by an Italian reviewer asking for, among other things, English translations of the sung texts (surely that would take up too much space;furthermore, when will we accept Russian as no less valid a language as Italian, French, or German?).So far, only good things can be said of this edition and I heartily recommend it!

Guide to the Practical Study of Harmony (Dover Books on Music) Review

Guide to the Practical Study of Harmony [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book on the strength of the authors name. It's a shame that his writing is not as strong as his music. Even for the period in which it was written, it is hard to read and much concentration required to ingest the information. That said, the information is there and goes from the basic intervals to complex chord structures, but most experienced composers/musicians would start reading at about two third into the book.

This is an interesting book, more interesting for giving an insight into the great Mr Tchaikovsky than studying harmony and for that I would buy it again. In my opinion, there are far better books on the subject.

A W.Roberts. (Composer)
