The Oratorio Anthology: The Vocal Library Baritone/Bass Review

The Oratorio Anthology: The Vocal Library Baritone/Bass [Paperback]

It's a very good book, covering many of the basics and several forgotten masterpieces.Puccini's Crucifixus from his Messa di Gloria is a good example of the fantastic forgotten works that are in here. The versions of Handel's Messiah are not correct, however. They are from an easy version for students; so if you are looking to do any Messiah, then get a copy of the score and not this book.

Product Description:
This is the most serious and useful collection yet published of solo arias from oratorios, masses and cantatas. The literature was confined to work by major composers, and by-passes the dated oratorio literature found in previous collections. The most famous music is here, and so is interesting and less famous music by masters. There are new music engravings for each aria, and extensive historical notes and translations. Solo instrumental obbligato parts, which can be cut from the book, are included on appropriate selections.

Very disappointed as the Boys and Girls Audtion books have too many duplicated songs. A Rip-off by Hal Leonard and the Arranger. Surley there are plenty of other songs for auditionees rather than all the duplications

Great Songs from Musicals for Teens (Young Men's Edition) (Vocal Collection) Review

Great Songs from Musicals for Teens [Paperback]

This book has a few songs that rarely appear in other collections (for example, "Diamonds are a Girl's Best Friend"), but for the most part, these songs are really common and the book is really short. I would recommend a larger book that contains more songs to cover your bases.

Worship Solos: for Flute (Instrumental Folio) Review

Worship Solos: for Flute [Paperback]

Overall, I'm enjoying this book and CD. Most of the music is easy enough for an amateur (I played for a few years in jr. high and high school, then took an 18-year hiatus before joining the church orchestra recently). I don't think there's a single note in the sheet music above E on the treble clef. At the same time, these arrangements give an amateur a good workout, as there aren't a lot of breaks in the solo music, and there are several sustained notes.

That said, other than the endurance factor, the music isn't very challenging. And the tempo on the songs is kinda slow, especially for a trumpet solo. I'd like to see a faster tempo, at least for some of the songs. I'd also like to see a mixture of skill levels represented--not professional level or anything, but something a little more challenging than whole, half, and quarter notes all the way through.

I like the book and do not regret buying it. I'd also like to try the Praise Solos for Trumpet by this same publisher. But I'll probably just borrow that one from a friend instead of paying for it.
