The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists (Book) Review

The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

We've all seen the lists of 'Best Guitarists Ever,' or 'Best Heavy Metal Guitar Players' which included Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix. We've also said "huh?"
This book is the first real collection of the Top 100 Metal Guitarists ever. The book leaves some people out due to them being "shredders" or "hard rock" guitarists and I would have included them (think Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen), but overall it's a great collection spanning many metal subgenres.
The real gem of this book is why each person belongs on the list and where they do. The author gives compelling arguments for each person. I won't say who is where in the countdown, but with any list it does create the argument for and against.
The most compelling on the list is who's #1. I totally agree with the authors choice, but many will not (hint: he's ultra-talented and carries a chip on his shoulder).
The only con I have with the book, in each bio of the guitarist, I think the author spends too much time talking about the guitarists band and describing their style. I would have preferred more analysis of their playing style, not the band's place in (insert name here) style of metal.
All in all though, it's a good book and one to read and debate with other metalheads! \M/

Product Description:
From its earliest days, heavy metal has been defined by its screamingly loud, distorted guitars, so it's no wonder that the genre is rife with fabulous players. This large format, well-illustrated book showcases metal's 100 greatest axe men, from early heroes like the legendary Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck to stars from the 1970s and 1980s such as Motorhead's Fast Eddie Clarke and Pantera's "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott to hot new talents like Mick Thompson of the nu-metal band Slipknot. Each entry includes a career biography, with makes and models of guitars played, and explains in technical but informal terms why the player deserves a spot on the coveted list. Sidebars and boxes detail each guitarist's trademark playing style and top riff. Throughout, the book celebrates guitarists like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, who don't play metal but do merit honorable mention for their contributions to rock.

Great album and even better TAB book. This was edited by John Petrucci, so what's in this book is what he plays and how he plays it.This album has less of the 64-th note solos for 20 pages, so there is a lot more uslearning guitarists can play with.A definite plus

Rock Guitar Heroics Review

Rock Guitar Heroics

Marcus is an excellent and clear communicator who has cherry-picked a variety of insights and techniques to present that capture the essence of what can only be called "Effective Rock Moves". If you're an advanced player you've probably mastered most of these already, but even so it's a great watch because Markus brings excellent clarity to the way he presents techniques and their applications (along with a few bits addressing composition which deserve to be greatly expanded.) Plus, he gives some very important grounding on warmup exercises and thoughts on attitude and personal development that are too often left unsaid in your typical "Lick 1A: Fast. Now Slow." instructional videos.

The downside to the video is the nearly total absence of music theory on display - and this is shame, because I'm certain he knows it and would probably be an excellent communicator of this as well. What this can lead to is reinforcing the attitudes of young players who have vast libraries of canned riffs 'n tricks at their disposal, but can't name a single scale or understand how those scales relate to chords and arpeggios. The overall impresion is a (very nice) analysis of the essence of rock 'n metal Style, but that in itself is like talking about the icing on a cake, while ignoring the cake.

Hope to see more videos from the Studio Guy behind Guitar Hero - like Paul Gilbert, he's a very entertaining instructor!

Caprice No 24

The book is short (46 pages), but you will spend a good amount of time practicing this stuff.

Metallica - Kill 'Em All Review

Metallica - Kill 'Em All [Sheet music]

Why does one reviewer say this book is complete and great and another say it is crap?Because they are reviewing two different books and I am sure my review will appear in two different spaces also.Amazon links reviews for similar titles so be sure to look at the picture of the book you are ordering. In the lower right corner if you see "Note for Note transcipitions" ,that is the book you want.It includes all of and very accurute lead and rhy. figures. The book also includes the songs "Am I Evil?" and "Blitzkrieg" which are no longer included on the Kill'em All cd because of copywrite rules. The only drawback is that in order to get all the songs on 78 pages the transcriptions are a little on the small side, but it is a great book overall.
