(More customer reviews)...I can't help but think that slowing the tracks down on the CD would have made it easier. Also, Perrin doesn't spend much time explaining the actual promised "breakdown" of Slash's work - the full title of the book is THE TECHNIQUES OF SLASH: THE BEST OF GN'R, but the title seems to change throughout - sometimes it's a demonstration of Slash's techniques, sometimes it's just tabs of their best songs with little explanation.

For example, he notes the "power strumming" for Civil War, but doesn't give any advice on how to strum the opening, which is in my opinion the hardest part.

It's still a good book and very useful because it contains accurate transcriptions of the songs, and many of them are indeed their best. However I also bought a tab book for Appetite for Destruction - the only bonus here is a few Use Your Illusion tracks and a CD, because the "tutoring" they promise on the back cover isn't exactly very helpful.

Also, don't be fooled by the back cover - November Rain, Bad Obsession and various others that are listed are NOT transcribed; brief solo passages are contained within a section called "Signature Slash Licks," which basically means you learn to play part of the November Rain solo, NOT the entire song (as I was lead to believe).

There's so much Appetite content in this book, I feel as if I paid twice for the same thing! But at least it has _some_ UYI songs, such as Yesterdays, which is fairly easy to play.

However also be aware that this is very hard - the solo for Sweet Child O' Mine is the hardest solo I've ever played, and they don't make it any easier with the CD. (Listen to how fast it goes!)

Good book, not perfect though.

The 100 Greatest Metal Guitarists (Book) Review

(More customer reviews)We've all seen the lists of 'Best Guitarists Ever,' or 'Best Heavy Metal Guitar Players' which included Jeff Beck and Jimi Hendrix. We've also said "huh?"
This book is the first real collection of the Top 100 Metal Guitarists ever. The book leaves some people out due to them being "shredders" or "hard rock" guitarists and I would have included them (think Randy Rhoads and Eddie Van Halen), but overall it's a great collection spanning many metal subgenres.
The real gem of this book is why each person belongs on the list and where they do. The author gives compelling arguments for each person. I won't say who is where in the countdown, but with any list it does create the argument for and against.
The most compelling on the list is who's #1. I totally agree with the authors choice, but many will not (hint: he's ultra-talented and carries a chip on his shoulder).
The only con I have with the book, in each bio of the guitarist, I think the author spends too much time talking about the guitarists band and describing their style. I would have preferred more analysis of their playing style, not the band's place in (insert name here) style of metal.
All in all though, it's a good book and one to read and debate with other metalheads! \M/

(More customer reviews)Why does one reviewer say this book is complete and great and another say it is crap?Because they are reviewing two different books and I am sure my review will appear in two different spaces also.Amazon links reviews for similar titles so be sure to look at the picture of the book you are ordering.In the lower right corner if you see "Note for Note transcipitions" ,that is the book you want.It includes all of and very accurute lead and rhy. figures.The book also includes the songs "Am I Evil?" and "Blitzkrieg" which are no longer included on the Kill'em All cd because of copywrite rules.The only drawback is that in order to get all the songs on 78 pages the transcriptions are a little on the small side,but it is a great book overall.
