This book contains transcriptions to:
Aja
Bad Sneakers
Black Friday
Bodhisattva
Chain Lightning
Deacon Blues
Don't Take Me Alive
Gaucho
Green Earrings
Hey Nineteen
Josie
Kid Charlemagne
My Old School
Night By Night
Parker's Band
Peg
Pretzel Logic
Reelin' In the Years
Rikki Don't LoseThat Number
Time Out of Mind
These are the exact same songs as the out-of-print Best of Steely Dan book, from Hal Leonard, with the teal background and album repros on the cover. So if that's the book you wanted, you'll get the same stuff here.
Is it good? Oh, yeah, it's good. The transcriptions are painstakingly well done. They're also complete, unlike the "Steely Dan Complete" book's piano/guitar/vocal style book, which leaves out many an interlude and instrumental section.
The only problem with this book is that it isn't a Steely Dan Complete. There are at least two other guitar tab books that include a few other songs (and are missing some of what's in here); I wish there were a single volume or less overlap among the multiple volumes. For example, "Greatest Songs" for guitar has, in addition to the majority (but not all) of what's here, these songs:
Greatest Songs has, in addition:
Daddy Don't Live in That New York City No More
Everyone's Gone to the Movies
Haitian Divorce
Sign In Stranger
Throw Back the Little Ones
Another book, "Best of Steely Dan" (white cover with black line drawing), also includes "Third World Man." (Another consumate Carlton solo. Oh, my, God.) It may contain others not in one or both of the previously mentioned books; I can't find a contents list for "Best Of."

Complete Blues Keyboard Method: Beginning Blues Keyboard [Audio CD]

This is one of the best beginning blues instruction books I've found. It teaches a bit of blues theory and provides the basic framework for the blues, but Tricia also provides the beginner with a few blues tunes to play. You can find books with advanced blues songs (from established performers) and you can find books with blues "riffs"....but you won't find many bookes for beginners that have good sounding, playable, blues tunes. Ms. Woods delivers on all fronts.

The Hal Leonard Real Jazz Book - C Edition (Fake Book) Review

The Hal Leonard Real Jazz Book - C Edition [Plastic Comb]
Average Reviews:

Don't be put off by the other, tepid reviews on this page: this is a great collection.Or I should say, this is half of a great collection. The thing is, you need volume one--the Hal Leonard "Ultimate Jazz Fakebook"--to go with it.
If you have them both, you have probably every jazz standard--and then some--that I've ever heard on a record--plus many tunes I have yet to hear anyone play.
The way I see it, "Ultimate" has more of the most commonly played songs, while "Real" has the great ones that got left out of the earlier collection, plus a lot of newer stuff.
A look at the compser index for "Real" shows a general trend: Lots of Desmond, Coltrane, and Herbie Hancock tunes are in the later book, while most of the Cole Porter and Gershwin stuff in in the earlier book.(Ellington's best known stuff is here, too, about half in the "Ultimate" book and half in the "Real" book.) There is NO duplication between the books.
I do my Band-In-A-Box work outs with the chords, and they are just fine, for the most part. I've caught a few errors--no big deal in a collection this vast.I find half of what I play tends to be from the grery volmem, and half from the black.
Get em both!

Beginning Jazz Guitar: The Complete Jazz Guitar Method: Beginning-intermediate-mastering Chord/Melody-mastering Improvisation Review

Beginning Jazz Guitar: The Complete Jazz Guitar Method: Beginning-intermediate-mastering Chord/Melody-mastering Improvisation [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've played guitar for more than thirty years and have focused on straight ahead jazz for the last 15 or so.All that time I've absorbed bits and pieces of musical knowledge from method books, lick guides and transcriptions as well as from the experience gained playing with others. No resource that I've encountered offers the degree of fundamental understanding that one can gain from this series of books.

Unlike most other method books, "Beginning Jazz Guitar" starts from chapter 1 with a dual track instruction mode of chord and scale studies mixed with a moderate dose of musical theory AND the author wisely limits the first volume to just the major scale.Too many other finepublications insist on bedeviling the student with a bewildering array of scales and modes in rapid fire succession. This volume shines when it comes to supplying answers to real world questions as the student might actually encounter them.Additionally, Jody Fisher presents scales in a format that encourages horizontal rather than vertical playing (one of the most important and most overlooked aspect of improvisation). As a matter of fact, more experienced players may have to relearn scale positions to work through the etudes and excercises in this book since they are fundamentally different than those normally found in most instructional texts.

Likewise, for a beginning book, the text does a credible job in presenting harmony and chord progressions with just enough theory to understand how progressions are structured and how to extend and alter chords. Most books present chordal theory in the first part of the book and then take up lead playing in the second half as if they bore no relationship with one another.Again, the author scores with the dual track approach.

Finally, the information contained in the "Coda" at the end of the book is worth the price alone. One could spend half a lifetime studying jazz guitar and not stumble over some these gems of info.

As a companion to this book I might also recommend "All Solos & Grooves for Jazz Guitar" by Jim Ferguson (Mel Bay) which serves up major scale studies along with more advanced solos utilizing similar techniques. As a matter of fact all of Ferguson's books would fit in nicely with this series.

All in all, an excellent resource for the determined student.

Astor Piazzolla: A Memoir (Amadeus) Review

Astor Piazzolla: A Memoir [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have read the Piazzolla biography Le Grand Tango and came away with a great deal of knowledge about Astor Piazzolla and his music. But it was not until I read Astor Piazzolla: A Memoir that I felt that I came to understand Piazzolla.
I like this format. Natalio Gorin's interviews with El Troesma are not the chronological, blow by blow account of Piazzolla's life I expected. Gorin asks some questions, but in a series of interviews generally allows Piazzolla to warm to whatever topic develops and then expand on it as the spirit moves him. He only prompts Piazzolla at times when he wants to steer the conversation in a particular direction, such as Piazzolla's politics or his love life.
This is really a tremendous work. One can feel Piazzolla's struggles as he describes his many clashes with the tango establishment and his constant fight to make a place for himself in Argentine and world music. Particularly interesting is the chapter in which he talks about numerous well-known musicians and those who influenced him, and those for whom he felt contempt. Particularly poignant is his relationship with the great bandoneonist Anibal Troilo who would often criticize Piazzolla's work, but at the same time express great affection and admiration for him.
I am amazed at the passions of his audiences whenever he would introduce new elements into his work. That people would actually riot and threaten a musician with death boggles the mind, but I am sure that reactions like that only more firmly convinced Piazzolla of the rightness of his course. Piazzolla was a fighter and he answered his critics not only with his fists, but with one musical masterpiece after another.
After Piazzolla is through talking, the book winds up with Gorin tying up loose ends and analyzing some of Piazzolla's greatest triumphs and greatest disappointments. He also takes a number of swipes at Aldo Pagani, a man Gorin considers to be Piazzolla's Rasputin. Gorin's conclusion is then followed by a couple of short commentaries by some of Piazzolla's collaborators and a discography of Piazzolla's recordings.
I highly recommend this book both by itself and as a complement to Le Grand Tango as a guide to understanding one of the greatest and most complex musician/composers of the 20th century.

Blues & Jazz Complete Review

Blues & Jazz Complete [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. Konowitz presents a thorough, pedagogically sound introduction to blues and jazz. The book is spiral bound, so it lays flat on your music stand. A variety of blues and jazz techniques are meticulously illustrated. New chords are introduced with a nice full page guide to the keyboard fingering. It is a bit cookie cutter, but having the fingering written out below and above the staffs is a plus. My only complaint is that the "band" seems to be a cheesy concoction of General MIDI instruments played through an inadequate sound engine. The CD sound quality is irritating. One word of extra advice: You will not need the CD for the companion book, Chords Complete, because it only contains incidental backing rhythm tracks for the chord exercises. I have four books authored byKonowitz. The sound quality of the CDs are uniformly cheesy except for the Listen and Learn Blues Book published in 2002.

Thelonious Monk for Guitar (Personality) Review

Thelonious Monk for Guitar [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
No longer is the idiosyncratic style of Thelonious Monk inaccessible to the guitarist.
For the guitarist who has ever spent time listening to the genius of Monks music - feeling at the same time enlightened by it's wisdom, and saddened by the ever nagging feeling that you, as a guitarist, could not truly benefit, this book is the answer to your unspoken wish.
If you have a desire to go beyond the limitations of the instrument - which turn out to be false - and are looking for your own unique voice, this book can be part of that journey for you. Somebody has finally done it for us. Gary has put in much time and effort, and he has found all the essential notes - those required to express Monk's style, and he's figured out how to put them on the fretboard. Every measure brings awe and surprise to the player. You won't believe that the sounds are coming from your guitar!
The book is well written, and each piece is a distillation of the essentials from numerous recordings. Gary Wittner has an encyclopedic knowledge of Monk's music, which is apparent in this book. There are extensive performance notes for each piece, some detailing almost every measure. These are essential, as they point out points that may not be obvious to you on first or even subsequent reading. For example, the duration of certain notes are very important to bring out the melody which is sometimes "hidden" in the chord voicings. The chord names are included at each measure. Fingerings are included when necessary, and everything is in TAB as well as standard notation. It couldn't be clearer.
It's not an easy journey - Monks' wasn't, and I don't imagine Gary's was either, but when you begin to work through the material you will start to see the connections. You'll start learning that wisdom that Monk was trying to pass on to us. It was meant for all of us.

Ultimate Play Along Just Classic Jazz Bass Vol3 w/CD (Ultimate Play-Along) Review

Ultimate Play Along Just Classic Jazz Bass Vol3 w/CD [Paperback]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're looking for books on "how to" play bass or read music then skip this one. There's almost no instruction in this book, but what you do get is GREAT tab and notation for some standard jazz pieces.
This book is good for learning the traditional bass lines and for practicing your timing/tempo when there's no one else around.I wish the CD had two versions of each song (one with and one without bass), but it doesn't.For the price, though, this is a pretty good way to learn some songs and practice without having a full band in your garage.
Nine standard jazz pieces are covered. Each song comes with the actual tune on CD, the printed song with bass clef and tab, and if that weren't enough you also get the bass solo and lead sheet.
Be careful, though, the lead sheet is not in tablature, so you should already know (or be willing to learn) how to read traditional music notation.Fortunately, since the book includes both the full version (notation and tablature) you can easily go back and forth as you progress. The lead sheet is great for taking on stage since it has all the essentials for the song on one easy to read sheet.

The Real Book: Sixth Edition Review

The Real Book: Sixth Edition [Plastic Comb]
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Take note, this book contains no lyrics, thankfully.

Like many musicians I have owned a copy of the, "Real Book 5th Edition" for a long time.I use it at rehearsals, I take it to gigs, and over years of use it has received a lot a wear and tear.As you may know the, "Real Book 5th Edition" is a home made publication, it is not available to the general public it is sold by musicians to musicians.Consequently finding a copy is very difficult, and replacing a worn out copy is just as difficult.Despite its limited availability it is used by musicians all over the world and has become a standard piece of equipment any jazz gig.

Hal-Leonard's "Real Book 6th Edition", at first glance, appears to a fully licensed duplicate of the, "Real Book 5th Edition" however, it is NOT.

The cover is the same, the type set is the same, many of the songs are the same, and most of the keys match the, "Real Book 5th Edition."Unfortunately, many important songs are missing including: "Gentle Rain", "Pennsativa", "Green Dolphin St.", "Days of Wine & Roses", "Spain", "A Foggy Day", and all frank Zappa songs. Some great songs have been added including: "Whispering", "Nuage", "Topsy", "That's Amore", "Easter Parade", "When You Wish Upon a Star", and many more.A few songs appear in a different key than the, "5th Edition" including: "Windows" and "Here's That Rainy Day."There are also some corrections including: "Blue Train" changed from Cm blues to Eb blues; "Equinox" changed from Cm to C#m; the chords to "Four" have been 'corrected'; the bass lines of "So What" and "Maiden" have also been corrected.

The result of Hal-Leonard's efforts gives us a great fake book which is easy to read and easy to buy.The song selection is great, but it is different form the, "5th Edition" this will present a problem when someone on a gig calls, "Conference of the Birds" or any other song not in this book.

What made the, "Real Book 5th Edition" a standard for so many years was the fact that it was one of a kind. Each song had it's own page, the type set was large and clear, the chords were simple and to the point, the songs listed were ones that musicians played, and the arrangements were streamlined (but accurate), for years this was the only book that used this style.

Today, however, many fake books published by Warner Brother, Sher Music, and Hal-Leonard use this style.Consequently great music and quality arrangements are easily accessible to all musicians. There is no longer a need for the, "Real Book 5th Edition" it has been replaced by fully legal and more accurate publications.Hal-Leonard's, "Real Book 6th Edition" is another one of the new generation fake books.

I hope all the songs missing from the, "Sixth Edition" appear in books 2 or 3 which are due out soon.

Product Description:
The Real Books are the best-selling jazz books of all time. Since the 1970s, musicians have trusted these volumes to get them through every gig, night after night. The problem is that the books were illegally produced and distributed without any copyrights or royalties paid to the master composers who created these musical canons. Hal Leonard is very proud to present the first legitimate and legal editions of these books ever produced. You and your customers won't even notice the difference...the covers look the same, the engravings look the same, the songlist is nearly identical, and the price remains fair even on a musician's salary! But every conscientious musician and music store owner will appreciate that these books are now produced legally and ethically, benefitting the songwriters that we owe for some of the greatest music ever written! 400 songs, including: All Blues * Au Privave * Autumn Leaves (Les Feuilles Mortes) * Black Orpheus * Bluesette * Body and Soul * Bright Size Life * Con Alma * Dolphin Dance * Don't Get Around Much Anymore * Easy Living * Epistrophy * Falling in Love with Love * Footprints * Four * Four on Six * Giant Steps * Have You Met Miss Jones? * How High the Moon * I'll Remember April * Impressions * Lullaby of Birdland * Misty * My Funny Valentine * Oleo * Red Clay * Satin Doll * Sidewinder * Stella by Starlight * Take Five * There Is No Greater Love * Wave * and more!

At 3 a.m. last night I finally read a last chapter, couldnt put it down before.Yes,Anita O'Day writting voice sounds very much like her singing self: ironic, witty, tough hip "swing chick" (her words) who didnt give a damn what others think. Her self-destructivness very much echoes another famous artist (in rock music) Marianne Faithfull,in fact this two women have much more in common than you think. Both survivors, both eventually come back and yes, both are still live preformers. Her opinion about other jazz singers are sometimes strange ("Like me,Ella never had a great voice"?) - but think that she was commercially oversahdowed by Fizgerald. As much as Anita's "Verve" albums are beautiful and timeless (I really think woman was a highest-class jazz improvisator, she grew up from Billie Holiday and made her own style) this book is sometimes painful to read.I believe there is a general curiousity about somebody's dirty linen,in this case it almost overshadow her art - at some points it reads like 50's detective story, with smokey jazz clubs, jazz musicians as a drug addicts and cops always around to "find" (read:set up) drugs in dressing room. With all beautiful music she made, its a pity that editor of the book find more interesting to emphasise her drug addiction, since her arrests, sanatoriums, jails and courts get more space than anything else.I dont think this was her intention, probably publisher wanted scandalous story, but if you dont know her music, this book can make you think that Anita O'Day was a famous junkie who had a music as a hobby.

To hear the backing track alone, simply turn your stereo balance to the right, or feed only the right channel out from your CD player. That said, this is a terrific jazz course, giving the student many performance-quality classics to learn. Both chord-melody and solos are first rate. Highly recommended for the talented beginner/intermediate jazz player.

I just started to work with this book.It tells you where you can play these scales...over what cords. I have to work on my execution but this looks like the right route for me.
